Bradford old Odeon for sale?!?
มุมมอง 4.7K16 ปีที่แล้ว
Bradford Odeon Rescue Group (BORG) prove in this video that Yorkshire Forward's Jan Anderson and Bradford Council's Kris Hopkins did say at a public meeting that they would sell the Odeon to a developer who was prepared to restore and re-use the existing building. Now is the time for them to live up to their promises.
Inside the Bradford Odeon. A BORG film.

Bradford Centre Regeneration (BCR) would have you belive that the former Odeon cinema in Bradford centre is derelict. This is far from the case as this film shows. All the pictures were taken between six & seven years after it closed in 2000. DO NOT TRUST BCR. SAVE THE ODEON!
Once completed, Will Bradford Odeon rival Leeds and Sheffield Arenas?
What is happening now?
When it re-opened in 88, I videoed & Edited the daytime bits n bobs and the evening formal opening, think a bond film was shown, Caroline Munro re "The spy who loved me" with Roger Moore (R.I.P.) was there most of the day chatting in jeans and t-shirt, very nice girl next door type lass, not sure what happened to any copy's of it, it was filmed in SVHS (just new to the market).
Yes here the way go to the back of the cinema and get some gear and enter it but what the point any way it stripped out
This cinema needs to be saved and i hate maud marshall because she is a lazy women so save it
Hi I'm desperate to do some photography in the building and really gain some publicity to what a fantastic site it is...did you get this footage? I'd really appreciate some advice as to how you get in and get footage of such a historic and treasured building..
I really want to get in there to do some photography but it's a killer to get into. Has anyone been able to get in there and can give some advice as to the best way to do it? Thanks!
as an Expat "old Bradfordian" I'm interested un the fate of this venerable building where I SPENT MANY A HAPPY HOUR. Keep me updated. Albert Denzler
It might not have been able to compete with the multiscreen picture houses now, but this odeon had atmosphere, you felt as tho you'd been to the pics! and the screens were massive! showcase picture house had been around for years, it was the only multiscreen i could remember before the new ones were built in bradford. All in all its a disgrace whats happened to this building! why don't they just listen to what we want done with it! i remember watching titanic in there and it was rammed!!
Yorkshire Backwards, were total criminals. QANGO
It's a real shame that 259 Paul Hines isn't in the shootout what makes it worse is Mick Sworder is in shootout and has no intention of going for the silver roof I mean NO disrespect to Mick he's a great racer but in this instance should have stepped aside and let a driver in that would contest all the rounds just my opinion
English people are too unempowered to do anything relying on fucking council n think sending them loads of mail and petitions is gonna do shit. Get real have a proper plan, the local people make things happen no one else. MY PROPOSAL; start a organisation made by and for the people of Bradford, raise money from people all people over bradford and then buy the damn building back....everyone roll up the sleeves and get to work on restoring and then turn it into a music venue called the Brad Pi
I find it disgusting that although people are campaining to keep this building and are genuinely passionate about it , the council and yorkshire forward continue to completely disregard the publics views. I expect the same thing happened in the sixties when they pulled down all the lovely stone buildings to make way for those awful prefab buildings.
@seemylive the demolition has been called off many times for this building i only hope it re opens again :)
@iyergem the entrances are boarded up so it would be difficult
Kris Hopkins is now part of a government that is in the process of scrapping Yorkshire Forward. By next March or so, Jan Anderson will be on the dole. Every cloud...
Not in bad nick considering the neglect of the council. Same thing is happening everywhere, Calderdale, Lancs County council, no-one gives a f**k about heritage.
man, that brings back so many memories, watching super mario brothers and jurassic park premiers in the same day! Poor old Odeon its part of Bradfords heritage!
@Schenkerflyingv agree!
@spacefan1962 101% Agreed!
The theatre is starting to look (sadly) a real eyesore. Once the roof starts to become weather damaged that will be the real beginning of the end, it will become dangerous and will have to be pulled down, like it or not.
I bet they turn it into a Mosque!!
that building can be made into something ells, its so big and useful
They'll rip it down leaving a bomb site and then run out of money to do anything with it
Sorry your wrong
surely it would be really cheap just to repair those pipes? The owners know about it and they could easily fix it. If this building was in Doncaster it would already have been knocked down - planning permission to demolish the Gaumont just a year after it closed.
This building has much more to offer than simple architecture (though the architecture is grand despite the simple brickwork). Its rich history unites the generations...which should include present & future generations. The mistakes of past demolitions in Bradford are set to be repeated.
I go past this building practically every day .. and it upsets me .. seeing what they are doing to it!! I have many special memories of that place .. stretching back over 30 years .. I met Freddie Garrity there .. way back in the 60's .. i think i was about 6 yrs old :) .. In the early 70's .. as a young teenager .. i used to sneak around the back .. and i would be let in via the fire exit :) ( How many more people did that? :) ) .. This building holds so many memories ..
Most of it is superficial and repairable. It will be replaced with something we don't need, there are several half empty hotels in Bradford, why do we need another? Give the people of Bradford what they want, and we want it saving.
Its a well known PR technique that if you want to get rid of a building you make it look as unattractive as possible in order to get public support for your ideas. This was frequently done with railway branchlines back in the 60s. Has anyone asked why the pipes are cut? Did they just wear out? Did someone carrying a scythe accidentally bump into them? Were they nibbled by big mice? Or ---- did someone know precisely what cutting those pipes would do???
Excellent Video..
Sorry I meant Cineworld. Odeon was fucking awesome.
I like this building a lot and it should be saved, this situation is ridiculous!
since when was that odeon a nice building? the odeon and the police station are eyesores, although alot of memories in both, i always thought that the odeon was a nasty brick hole!
What's next, the town hall. Seems like they want to get rid off all the nice Architecture and replace it with buildings that will look ugly in 5 yrs time!
Please renovate it before it falls down of it's own accord.
The Odeon formerly known as the Gaumont Cinema was where The Beatles appeared in the sixties and the cinema can be spotted by the eagle-eyed in 'The Beatles Anthology' (footage shows the Beatles leaving the Gaumont by a side door in the alley at the top side of the theatre, Alhambra side). Built on the site of a brewery, the building when first erected was called 'The New Victoria Cinema'. On the Thornton Road side of the building, where the windows are bricked up, was a very classy restaurant.
Adam Faith and Emile Ford appeared there in February 1960.
Jan Anderson - a Leeds telephone number, I notice.
Keep fighting for the old Odeon, it's an amazing building and it deserves to shine again...
Hear! Hear!
Their deception, lies, incompetence and corruption never cease to amaze me. I hope they end up in prison like Poulson - that other crook who attempted to destroy Bradford's great heritage. Just who the hell do they think they are??
Keep up the pressure! Iconik buildings like this need to be saved. Over here in Barrow we've lost nearly all our old theatres and cinemas - Once they're gone they're gone for ever. Don't let it happen in Bradford!!
Hear! Hear!
Fond memories of watching Star Wars, Empire and Jedi all back 2 back one Saturday afternoon with just about every kid in Bradford :)
omg i did too :)
think tis gna get restored cineworld is shit !
I have to say the flat roof was a real problem and as I understand leaked standing water into the auditorium(s)from day one. I spent many an hour mopping up before opening after heavy rain. As a child like most I spent many a happy hour watching films there but then to end up working as projectionist from 1992 until closure was a dream. My best memory at age 13 was the mirror ball effect with 'Star Wars' back in '77, the idea of projectionist legend Mr 70mm himself Tony Cutts.
If you boys go back inside again grab the two wooden Cinemation mark 2 automation units on the walls in projection boxes 1 and 2 they need to be restored, preserved, and put back into operational use again.
Great to see inside the old place again. I was there on the last night before closure mainly because I was the one showing the films for the last time a sad night indeed, even worse was taking out the old usable projection equipment over the following week happily most of which is now with me at the Odeon Harrogate and still flawlessly running day in day out. I do hope somehow the old place can be saved and put back to good use. Thanks for all the pictures and keep up the pressure.
Just exactly who is getting the backhanders for selling these places off to the developers? And who, from the council who is supposed to serve the community is ensuring that the people of Bradford are getting any community services from them. Karen (a developer with a conscience)
Long live the ODEON
Brilliant, I hope this is seen by many people so that much more support is generated to save this landmark building.
