Project A3 2.5T quattro manual 1/5 07K swap deep dive
A deep dive into a full build of a 07K 5 cylinder engine for turbocharging to swap into a manual swapped 8P A3 quattro. Very information heavy. Includes history of the 07K engine and its variants, information on 07K engine codes, why the 07K engine is a great choice, a component overview of what is being re-used with my A3 for the new engine and also what is being used to build my 07K engine. The first video of a planned series of 5.

Great video!!! I have a 2006 Passat 2.0T manual transmission. With a bad engine, can i put a 2.0T engine that was previously matted to a automatic transmission in this car with the manual transmission bolted to it.
@@williamaufrecht9759 If the automatic is a DSG (dual clutch, not torque converter) yes.
I've watched about 4 times so far. Great video, great approach and delivery. New sub. Thank you brother
thank you for documenting this big help
Two minutes in I became a sub. I love it so far
Would it matter if it's a 09g ea888.3 2.0tsi passat?
@@patgraeme775 The engine should be able to accept a manual gearbox. The wiring will be different, most likely.
@carsonthepartsguy8751 that's my question I guess, about to pay off my 2018 passat r line, want a 3rd pedal, how much wiring/computer work is needed
@carsonthepartsguy8751 not a ton of write ups on 09G to manual for b7.5
Happy to have found this video as I've been thinking very seriously about doing a 07K swap in an 2016 Audi S3 8V pre-facelift. Nice to see the 8P getting some love.
I find Audi tt 3,2 manual 2007 is it gonna be direct Swap parts to my mk5 r32 dsg ?
Yeah, that’s the one you want.
I have completed all steps and got all codes cleared up, I need help with cruise control as it doesn't seem to work.
Did you recode the steering column electronics? If so, check your connections, and if they’re all good the clutch switch might be bad.
What motor mounts are you going to use?
@@5Seazons I ended up getting a set of 034 Motorsports Density line for 6MT swapped 07K applications. I don’t intend to launch the car often or at all, so they should hold up for a while the way I’ll be driving it. May revisit it later, but didn’t want to just use stock mounts.
So how much HP do you think you could make
@@JoshuaRowe-n6t The turbo itself is rated for 800WHP. I’m going for 720HP at the flywheel.
Will the DQ 350 transmission work on FWD or AWD only ?
@@SPS.Corp.1 It was sold as both. The only major difference between FWD and AWD is the differential.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 will VW DQ350 work or only Audi ?
@@SPS.Corp.1 I think you mean MQ350 - DQ refers to DSG gearboxes, of which there is a DQ200, DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500. VW owns Audi, the parts bin is the parts bin. With the MQ350, they were available with 2 bellhousings - 4 cylinder and VR6. The 07K 5 cylinder has the 4 cylinder bellhousing pattern.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 can I do this swap with a 2015 8v model ? Or is it only 8P
@@SPS.Corp.1 You can, the firewall has the provision to mount a clutch pedal.
My car is a 2011 manual Audi S3 8p, would the engine fit with the MQ350 gearbox and the flywheel of the 2.0 TFSI engine?
Yes. If you use a NA 07K crank, you’ll need a 6 bolt flywheel from a 2.0TFSI (timing belt) engine. If you run a CEPA TT-RS crank, you’ll need a flywheel from a CCTA TSI (timing chain) engine as those have 8 bolt flywheels. I believe your S3 should have the 6 bolt flywheel.
Can the vw early and late timing chain engine crankshafts be interchanged? Why did you turn the valves down rather than opening up the valve seats to accommodate the larger valves or get a later large valve head? Is the small valve head a better performer?
In order: Yes, as long as you use the corresponding timing components with the appropriate crank. You can update an older block with the new components, or backdate a newer block with the older components. WRT the intake valves, the machine shop had already decked the head and cleaned it, so abandoning it to get a later 170HP head didn’t make sense. Plus my machinist said for my goals the bigger valves wouldn’t be a factor. Hindsight being 20/20, I’d have sourced a 170HP head and swapped it out. But I think it’ll be OK.
Please tell me your going to have more videos coming soon I just sourced a 2006 BGP to build as I follow along in my 2006 A3 hatch 6sp fwd only 😢 but super stoked about seeing the rest and thank you for your contribution to the world.
@@fornoreason4291 Yes. I have footage of the disassembly to sort through, but the footage only starts about halfway through. So I’ll be piecing it together with pictures and explanations to cover the second video. 3rd video will be engine assembly (currently in progress, still waiting on a few parts to arrive), 4th will be installation/integration into the car + 1st start, 5th will be footage of it driving, on the dyno, and a recap.
i’ve just manual swapped my 07 passat and i can’t get my brake lights to turn off, there constantly on since the swap, i’ve replaced the brake switch and swapped to a manual ecu however i haven’t added a clutch switch, would this have anything to do with it?
Sounds like the brake switch needs to be replaced.
Perfectionist best work and video in detail Appreciate sir
I have a 2014 VW Jetta Sportswagon MK-6 chassis with a DSG transmission and I live in Chicago. I already did a Malone Tuning Stage 2, CP-3 fuel upgrade, Glow Plug Duration and Dynamic Idle. I have the Raw Tek max performance DPF Delete, completely removed EGR system and assembly, as well as removed intake swirlers. The emissions is a hard 100% deleted with the Kerma TDI airbox delete and KERMA TDI turbo inlet hose. I am looking do do a DSG to 6 speed manual transmission swap on my 2014 VW JSW TDI. Where do i start and who do I go to. Thank you for your help.
Get your parts from a manual TDI, preferably from the same model year, and start swapping pretty much. You'll have to review the wiring diagrams for the TDI, but it will mostly be the same as the swap I've done here. You just need to swap the passenger front axle as they are different between DSG and Manual on the FWD.
I have an audi a5 2011 and I think I have a t94 ecm also. But can you explain more in detail of the wiring situation? And explainittle more the coding. Thank you.
For your particular vehicle, I’d have to go into the wiring diagrams and look all of that up. I wish I had the resources to manual swap all of the Audis, but I don’t. Sorry.
Your best bet would be to find one of the swap videos for a B8 chassis Audi. This video is specific to the PQ35/36 chassis, which would be 8P A3, 8J TT, and the MK5/MK6 VW Golf/Jetta and some other transverse models. I don’t own a B8 and don’t currently have any plans of covering a swap on one. Again, sorry I can’t be of help on that one.
Would it be possible to change a DSG 7 from a Skoda Octavia 2011 1.8 tsi to a manual? 🤔 It has 160 hp and also a 1 year fixed engine, because of the oil use I had to do it..
Its possible. However, we did not get those particular 7 speed DSGs here in North America. Your best bet would be to find a parts car with the same engine that has the manual and pull everything you need from it.
Found you from your comment on insta about Americans not driving manual
As they shouldnt. Dsg and 10r80 better.
Great information in this video, thanks for all the detail Carson! I tried to look to see if anyone else asked but how did you acquire the NFQ euro-spec transmission? And do you by chance know the p/n for that as well as a bell housing for a 3.2L VR6? I have an MKV R32 that I am wanting to manual swap here in the states.
I got the gearbox from Cascade German. You would want to use the bell housing from an 8J TT 3.2 if you want to use the NFQ gear ratios. Otherwise, just get yourself an entire gearbox from the 8J TT 3.2 as it directly swaps into the MK5 R32.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 I was already thinking about the 8J TT to pull parts from. I might just try to find an entire donor car since I am considering doing this because I blew up my R32 engine.
Timing is impeccable, also looking at seeing if anyone had this in mind for A3 Quattro, following!
Hi there I want my mk5 golf manual to dsg.is it the same in reverse?
No, it isn’t. A lot more wiring to add. Is it possible? Yes. Am I going to cover that subject? Alas, no.
can anyone confirm if mk5 r32 ecu is "unlocked" as in will it take the coding like this a3? i have already received my manual swap from overseas just doing my wiring research now. seems like many skip over actually wiring in the clutch switch and just ground that purple/ white wire from the dsg trans plug to start it. would be cool to know if these wiring diagrams and brake light switch are the same for mk5 r32 application
It will not. You'll have to have it flashed with manual software, if I recall correctly. You may also be able to use an immo-defeated ECU from a manual 8J TT 3.2, but not 100% sure.
Link for the thrust bearing mod?

Absolutely magnificent; detailed and comprehensive. Eager to watch as you build my dream-car!
What was your donor car or what donor car would you recommend for doing this swap on an 8J TTS?
If you want to get a donor car for it, your best bet would be a MK6 Golf R. It has the same engine as your TT-S.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 Thanks! Would I have everything I need with the donor car?
@@joshuacucufate8413 The only thing you’d have to get that is TT-specific is the shifter surround trim, and maybe a different shift knob and boot depending on your tastes. In the USA, you’d get the shifter trim from an 8J TT-RS as that was the only manual 8J sold here.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 Thanks a lot!
I’m scoping out doing a manual swap on my Tiguan when I rebuild the engine. Thank you for making this video
Thanks brooo❤
Hey, I have gone through with the swap just the way you did… but I think I kinda missed a step in the coding or something, as my cruise control doesn’t work Do you know what it could be? Does yours work?
You have to recode the steering wheel electronics control module if you haven’t already.
Hi I like vw swaps and things haldex 🛠🔥😂
Thanks for this video. I have a Manual Golf mk6 GTD that i'm planning on using as a donor to do this to a DSG mk6 GTD. The reason reason for not buying another manual or just driving this one is that it has 340k Km (210k miles) on it is getting tired, leaking oil and doesn't have the options i want. I want one with a sunroof as I had in my mk6 1.4tsi twincharged version. But i can't find any original 2.0 tdi 170hp versions with a manual and a sunroof in 4/5door. always a 3 door or a dsg with the sunroof. Now i'm looking into buying a dsg mk6 and doing this swap. As i am not a bodywork type of carguy, a gearbox swap would be easier than swapping roofs on a non sunroof one.
Hey Carson loved the Video! Would it be possible to go from a 07 FWD 6MT A3 to Quattro 6MT? Does the prefacelift motor bolt up to the 02Q or the MQ350 trans?
Short answer: yes, it’s possible. Long answer: it involves cutting and welding to modify/replace the rear floor pan, welding in center driveshaft support bearing mounts into the tunnel, replacing the rear subframe with a quattro subframe and diff/axles, replacing the gas tank with a quattro version, and wiring in the Haldex unit. The 02Q gearbox will bolt up to any VW/Audi engine with the 4 cylinder bellhousing pattern when used with an appropriate flywheel, this includes the 07K 5 cylinder engine (with slight grinding to the bellhousing on the transmission to clearance the timing cover)
can you go from a manual to a dsg with an audio tt mk1 ?
You can, but it could possibly require a standalone ECU for communications with the mechatronic in the DSG. The factory MK1 (8N) TT 3.2s were standard with DSG in the USA, no manual option until the MK2 (8J) TT 3.2 came out. People have DSG swapped older stuff but that isn't a subject I'm likely to cover myself.
I have 2007 jetta gli automatic dsg...can conversion to stick shift?
Yes. This video would mostly apply to your Jetta. You will need a passenger side axle for the manual, shift box/cables, the gearbox itself, pedals, clutch/pressure plate/flywheel, starter, and the wiring changes.
Hey, I just did manual swap with wiring and programming all Complete in my a3 8P Quattro. But I cant get to start it with key, I have to jump it with the starter. Would you known where to look to solve this issue?
Is your clutch switch grounded through J519 according to the wiring diagram? You can ground the purple/black wire in the DSG harness to get it to start.
You the realist. Ill be doing a video on my mk6 gti . Sourced all the parts including the trans (excluding stg2 clutch) for 300 pulled from a 13 gti out of a junkyard
Excellent. 👍🏻

Great video Carson, you've whipped up my interest to swap my DQ200 DSG to a 6speed manual gearbox. Thank you for the education and encouragement.
Do you think i can do the same with my audi TT 3.2 quattro 2009? thank you.
You absolutely can. You’ll need to use parts from a TT 3.2 6MT donor car.
No mention of the spigot bearing in the end of the flywheel. Does the manual trans and the DSG share the same spigot bearing?
Irrelevant. The DSG flywheel is incompatible with the manual transmission and vice versa.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 the spigot bearing is in the crankshaft not the flywheel.
@@PetesWorkshop The input shaft of the DSG is the only one that protrudes into the crank, so on the manual the pilot bearing isn’t used. Also, DSG and Manual engines share part numbers, so there’s that.
Oh! I did not know that. That is a lot of rotating mass to hang of the end of the gearbox input shaft. There is a listing for a spigot bearing for mk2 Audi TT 6spd Manual. I’m about to put a 2.0 tsi engine from a DSG mk6 GTi so I will report back my findings.
@@PetesWorkshop On the manual, the pilot bearing serves the purpose of receiving the clutch alignment tool, as when I did mine it fit right in. But if you Google pictures of the 02Q gearbox and 02E gearbox and look at the input shafts, you’ll see the difference.
Hello. I wanted to swap my dq200 to a manual 5 speed MFX transmission. Are the steps about the same or is there anything different? Also are there any compatibility issues? Its on a 2015 polo gt tsi.
Roughly. We don’t get the Polo or the DQ200 here in North America, so I’m not familiar with those. Best bet would be to get the components from a same year parts car that is manual so you can get everything you need to do the swap.
Just wanted to drop an update, my 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI is on the road thanks to this video. Everything works. Cruise control, reverse lights and clutch interlock. It was a job and learned a lot on the way but it's definitely do-able.

did you have to reflash the ecu?
@@leonkurtish9242 In my case, I only had to recode it with VCDS. Not all ECUs are able to be recoded this way, however.
@@carsonthepartsguy8751 did you have issues with rev hang at all? And is there anyway i could double check if my car is compatible (coding wise) for a manual swap before i order the parts?
@@leonkurtish9242 No rev hang issues with my swap. As for checking if it can be recoded, just go into it with VCDS and see if it’ll let you.
Thank you so much for sharing this precious material, and congrats on the excellent job. I'd like to know if you have wired the mirror tilt down when in reverse. I lost this function when I swapped my VW Golf 5 DSG to manual. Thanks in advance!
That should be handled by J519, and if you have wired in the reverse light switch to J519 so that your reverse lights come on, that should also trigger anything else tied into the vehicle being put in reverse gear. The car I swapped in the video had rear parking aid - and it worked immediately after the swap. I would suggest investigating your coding.
@@derciobadru4091 Its listed in my wiring diagram, but you'll have to refer to the one for your Golf. My reverse light switch is connected for power at the engine compartment fuse panel, runs to the reverse light switch, then from the reverse light switch it goes to J519. The car is already wired for the rest of it.
In my case, the reverse light switch it´s not connected to J519. The reverse light switch wires are connected two wires from the old automatic gearbox connector. I have rear light, but I don't have functions like mirror tilt down when reverse. I need to find a good mechanic and electrician like you, near me. Once again, congratulations on the excellent work.
@@derciobadru4091 Yeah, you would have to refer to your car’s specific wiring diagram to see how that’s handled. Good luck with it!

That is a question for the guys at RossTech. They have pretty good tech support and they’re likely a better ask than I am. Your ECU may not be able to recoded. Best bet is to send them screen shots of your ECU identifier and they’ll tell you if it’s locked or not. You might have to get it reflashed to manual if it is.
