Holidays in 19th and 20th Century Portland the Rideau Lakes
During a period of industrialization in the mid-19th century, Canadians began to move off the farm and into larger towns and cities. But this urbanization made city-dwellers long for nature and the wilderness experience. And with spare time, a bit of money and better transportation options, vacations became a possibility for the urban middle class. This film looks at the emergence of the concept of the middle class vacation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the significance to Portland and Big Rideau Lake. Portland made the transition from being a commercial centre to a hopping hub of recreation. This seamless transition, and the popularization of owner-operated motorboats, undoubtedly played a significant role in the continued use and preservation of the Rideau Canal.

Using a handheld camera and glass-plate technology, he left a vast collection of images, both as an amateur and a professional photographer. He practiced at a time when camera technology was changing rapidly, and there was a great debate over wha...

Don't lie to people it's wrong
What happened
Wow! Magneficent place. I need to visit Rideau.
How interesting and well done Alison. Amazing history.
When is station 2 starting the build?
When will fiber be ready to use on county road 5?
Do people trust politicians..???
Well done Mayor. Good to see you out and about. :)
Why would the township waste vendors' time getting a price for an option we won't choose? This mayor continues to ignore the will of the majority voters (by way of their representatives). As for that $360000, this is sunk cost fallacy. Stop throwing good money after bad. What was spent so far was for a project that was clearly not anchored with the community. And how are 10000 people supposed to pay an 8 million dollar debt? Done the math for that one? He doesn't want us to know that this feeble attempt at legacy-building on the backs of taxpayers for the next 30 years was so badly grounded with the community. The mayor has wasted our money and torn down irreplaceable parts of our heritage, damaged communities and lied to us, using dirty tricks to blackmail us into supporting his new office with the lake view. Enough already. We'd be better off with no mayor at all.
bla bla bla were his lips moving?
The "No" vote was a joke, all it accomplished was keeping everyone from finding out what the Hub cost would really be. Oh, and waste $360,000 dollars. At the Jan 16th meeting several of these "No" voters requested changes to the project, then still voted no, I don't understand their thinking.
Very disappointing vote outcome. Extremely short sighted. Having reviewed the plans, including parking, this is a prudent and practical location and plan.
Would you happen to have more information on McKinney House? It's just south of Lombardy on Hwy 15. I've been told there used to be a blacksmith on site.
As a local Pirate re-enactor, i very much appreciate the efforts in producing this show! HUZZAH!
As a Lombardy and Rideau Ferry resident on Millers Bay, I really appreciate this! It is absolutely fantastic and so informative!
Thanks, Dan. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Very helpful video for someone new to the area. Perhaps a link to a list of the locations mentioned in the video would be useful too, rather than having to review the video every time I think of something to donate.
Great reminder as well as informative. Thank you Mayor Arie

This is a very fine historical product. It uses new archival photographs and documents to tell a little-known story from the Great War. Highly recommended for historians and educators.
Thanks, Dr. Cook. I appreciate your kind words, and have enjoyed reading several of your books.
