    I have always followed the rule of thumb every 3,000 for conventional and every 5,000 for synthetic you can never go wrong with clean fresh oil changing your engine will give you a long life

    And he only has to say it ONCE: 5000 miles, and when using full syn! So, where are we out west here, in the southern regions where we do not see many days/nights below freezing? and when using a premium synthetic blend? I'll tell you: 5000 miles. Take it all with a grain of salt (so to speak), use your experience as a guide (if you're a motorhead), but best practice for those unable to consult w/ the brain trust on any subject (no excuse, now that there is so much relevant content here in the University of TH-cam) is to follow the manufacturer's Owners Guide for Severe Service oil change intervals. Severe Service is, basically, long engine idle times, frequent short trips (not allowing the oil to become hot to release engine internal condensation moisture content) and/or regular travel using unpaved roads... Engines today are indeed better manufactured, digital engine management's fuel injection reduces idle fuel consumption and reduces fuel dilution of engine oil, and thermostat devices (more than just an in-block liquid temp valve) that will bring engines to normal operating temps sooner - all of this aids modern engines' potential for longevity. If we really want to know what wear is occurring in our engines, send a sample of oil off to an oil analysis company for testing. This I have not yet been compelled to do since my vehicles have all given me superior service with some simple, regular care. We are also human, we work hard, long hours and a year can come and go quickly. If for some reason we do not achieve 5000 miles in that fiscal year since the last oil change, we just change it anyway. I'd love to change my oil at 3000 miles like when in the old carburetor days but with an 8-quart sump to fill using expensive engine oil and on a retirement budget I'll stick w/ 5000 miles. Cheers! Safe travels to everyone, and anyone reading this. You are here because you care about your own machinery. God bless you.

    I have never had an engine go out on a car, no matter how well or poorly I saw to oil changes. I keep cars on into old age, my youngest car is ten years old. I have replaced several transmissions and air conditioners, but never an engine.

    After the warranty period expired, I changed the oil in my 300cc motorcycle every 3,000km, and the filter every 6,000km. After 55,000km, the engine is perfect - doesn't blow smoke, doesn't burn oil. As the saying goes "Fresh is best!"

    Coming from Europe I was shocked when I came to Canada and the exact same cars suddenly required a 5000 km (3000 miles) oil change interval when the same car in Germany had a 15000 or 25000 km interval. I drive a sprinter van now for years and I do the required 30000km interval, but with the oil they recommend. In Europe the service intervals are a big part of the purchase consideration.

  • @scrappydog7741
    @scrappydog7741 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Jeff, back in the day the interval was 5k miles and the oil filter was changed every other oil change. (Of course most engines leaked and or burned at least a quart every 3k miles so there was the need to add at least a fresh quart before the 5k mile mark but I digress.) Then when these 15 oil change places popped up the intervals became 3k miles and a new filter every oil change? You're telling me that the engines and the oil they use today have gotten worse since then?

    On the newer cars, can you adjust the oil change interval? For example, if the oil change indicator is set at 8000 miles, can I cut it back to 4000 or so?

    Auto manufacturers want to sell cars, but they also want return customers. Why would they deliberately tell a consumer to wait longer between oil change intervals? The few times that I’ve taken my vehicle back to the dealer they’ve pushed the service intervals up to try to make extra money.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The manufacturers have bean counters who have a picture of their "ideal" customer. Their marking deparments have figured out how they need to shape the perceptions of that ideal customer to get them to purchase a new car every 3-5 years (if you don't _want_ to purchase a new car every 3-5 years, you're _not_ their ideal customer). They only need the warranty to last through the period they want their ideal customer to own the car: 3-5 years. The manufacturers' marketing departments balance perceived reliability with perceived low maintenance cost just for those 3-5 years. If the car suddenly becomes expensive to maintain just as the warranty runs out, that's fine with the manufacturers...because they _want_ you to buy a new car, and they've figured out that their ideal customer is okay with buying a new car at that point. So, they extend service intervals to make the car appear nearly maintenance-free for 3-5 years...at the cost of the car's potential total life span. But the manufacturer's viewpoint is different from the dealers...and also different from independent mechanics and a lot of us customers. Dealers make a lot more profit from long-term financing, service departments, and selling used cars than from selling new cars. Dealers _want_ cars that are still maintainable beyond five years. A new car with extended service intervals during the first five years that then becomes too unreliable and expensive to keep or resell isn't good for dealers who sell long-term financing and used cars. It's not good for independent mechanics. It's not good for us owners who want to keep our cars for more than five years. Dealers and independent mechanics encourage us to get the maximum potential life out of our cars because long-term maintenance is where _they_ make money. And that's also the better deal for owners who want to keep their cars a long time.

  • @Lightmaker5
    @Lightmaker5 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Oil cleans also as long as its fine. It's not only for lubrication. Plus there's no such thing as zero friction oil. Means your pistons and cylinders do wear. This fine dust mixes with the oil that you can't even filter out it's so small. If you don't change it you create a grinding paste. That wears your cylinders, piston rings and bearing even quicker. Only semi trucks have such heavy duty filters that can filter it out. Oil molecules also wear and become thinner. Fuel and water gets inside the oil too which degrades it even further. Semi trucks won't have that problem because they burn it all out. But even they eventually have to change oil and expensive filters. Read your manual they don't bs you. It's a reality for oil.

    I was in a Cummins engine class a few years ago, and they were saying that they were going to say 80k was going to be the extended oil interval recommendation. I called BS. Synthetic or not, it is a major investment for a engine swing for a big rig. I would say 10k mile intervals depending on application would be the way to go for longevity on big diesel engines. 3k for cars , 3-5k for pickups. This is what I do for fleet and personal vehicles.

    I’ve been a technician and working in a dealership for 48 years the oil change interval that manufacturers suggest is a total joke more than likely what happens is is the VVT system in the engine gets clogged and from what I’ve seen especially from a company like Subaru they don’t even care about receipts. If you have this issue, they will most likely cover it under warranty just to retain you as a customer they give away the store nowadays.

    Both of my Toyota Tundra's engine service lights come on at 5K. My 2015 has 250,000 miles on it so far. I hardly ever changed it at 5k. Most of the time it's around 7.5K or so. But my 2025 Tundra has only 2200 miles and not an oil change yet. This one I'm planning to change at 5K every oil change because of the twin-turbos. I doubt it will hold up as good as the old Tundra but maybe I'll be surprised.

    Want your vehicle to last "forever"??? Change it every 3000 miles, IT'S CHEAP INSURANCE! Want your vehicle to last 10 years? Change it every 5000 miles. Want your vehicle to last 5-6 years? Change it every 10,000 miles. Oil is the life blood of an engine...keep it clean! Every vehicle I've owned since I was 21 I changed my own oil (I'm now 76). ALL my vehicles went over 250,000, and the only reason I sold them was I got sick of driving them and wanted a change. My 09 Explorer I bought in 2017 with 100K on it. It's now got 223K on it, and doesn't burn oil, doesn't rattle at start up, and gets 22 mpg on the highway.

    Oil technology has gotten further than the old idea of changing oils at certain intervals. One of the reasons why you change the oil at certain intervals is because the oil filter does not filter down enough to the right micron which makes contaminants turn the oil into liquid sandpaper over a period of time If you have a good oil filter that uses what's called lofted fiber filter material. They will filter down to 10 microns normally and down as far as 5 microns over a period of time. This removes the contaminants that are big enough to wear on your engine parts. And lofted fiber can hold 3 to 5 times more stuff than the surface paper filtering media that most cheap filters use Also synthetic oil doesn't break down as readily as petroleum oil does and is why they only use synthetic oil and jet engines. The three top tears synthetic oil makers is amsoil, mobile, and Pennzoil. The rest just got into the game to compete with the others. Amsoil is the highest top tier made synthetic oil on the market. And they just passed their 50 years in business. And they're the only company that will test their oil against other companies and name them by name. Not brand a,brand b, or band c. And when you use other manufacturers by name, your test better be correct or they'll see you for slander. And many have tried to sue amsoil, but ended up getting red-faced in court had done the test over 100 times. To prove they weren't cheating. Because the oil does exactly what it says it does.
