Mello is an amazing and incredibly intriguing character. He's incredibly smart like Near and L, in my opinion actually maybe smarter than Near, but unlike Near he takes much more action. He acts much more on his deductions. Near isn't able to do this, which means that Near would've definitely lost to Kira without Mello's help. Mello managed to deduce on his own that there were 2 notebooks, one in the taskforce and one not in Kira's hands, but in X-Kira''s hands. He knew Near was currently tracking X-Kira. He also knew that if he was to kidnap Kiyomi, X-Kira would definitely act on his own to kill her, and reveal the real Death Note. In conclusion, he kidnapped Kiyomi knowing he was going to die, just to take down Kira. In the end, he proved that Near would've died without his help, and without him Light wouldn't have been caught.
