I had a surprise this morning when I went out to the barn to find new baby goats a week before I thought I was expecting them! They are full term, but it was a cool night and the 2 little girls were both chilled and crying! I rushed them inside, wrapped them in hot towels and a heating pad. Then went out and milked their Momma to bottle feed then some warm colostrum (first milk). Soon they were...

Thank you, Fjords are amazing

I have tried to transplant thistle for my goats but it hasn’t worked so far.
Separating them causes distress. Try plastic nose weaning rings next time. Just stick them in and three weeks later the Ewes will be dry. When weaned they will be more independent and separating them will cause less stress.
Also if there are twins, you can put a plastic weaning ring in one and wait a week or two to put one in the other lamb.
If there are twin lambs you can put a weaning ring in one and wait a week or two to put a weaning ring in the other. That can be easier for the Ewe. The physical separation is old school or for large flocks. The plastic weaning rings are inexpensive, reusable, effective and safe.
Thanks! I use weaners on my calves, but have not wanted to on my goats or lambs, as they have a lot more tender noses. They aren't stressed much when they are weaned as a group. I use teat taping for my goats! And that way they don't have to be separated, as goats are a lot harder to keep in! But with my lambs, they forget about Mom a lot faster.
The old testament says to keep ten percent of the rams. Then remove the poorest looking ten percent of ewe lambs. Then of the remaining 90% of ewe lambs remove another ten percent. So the flock grows by retaining 81% of Ewes minus Ewes retired for age, health and poor performance. For your information. Pastures take a beating from the sun during the summer months when the days are long. Consider planting trees. In Illinois one might plant Thornless Honey Locust and Swamp White Oak as a couple examples. Silvopasture with 25% shade can do better than open pasture, especially in dry years and the shade helps Ewes with milk production due to reduced heat stress and the lambs gain more weight. Consider installing an Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents that host ticks, attract and feed Bobcats, Coyotes and Pit Vipers. Barn Owls, Screech Owls and Northern Saw-Whet Owls all rely on nesting cavities and due to forestry management practices there are not enough quality nesting cavities to rear chicks. It would be interesting if we could create genetically modified Alpaca fiber baring Sheep. Congress should restore Tribal Treaty Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Rights in Yellowstone Park. Congress should eliminate Protections for man killing man eating Gray Wolves. Coyotes kill 110,000 cattle each year in the lower 48 States plus goats, pigs, poultry, sheep, cats and dogs. Wolves are three times larger than Coyotes. Keep Wolves safe in Zoos. Hope you can gain access to more land and increase your flock size. Good video; Cinematography, audio, scrip and presentation all good. A good crop of cuties.

Im so happy to have found your channel. Ive recently considered raising Katahdin sheep for their parasite resistance qualities and really love your introduction of a Painted Sheep for color in some of your flock. Absolutely stunning! Did you introduce a PAINTED RAM into your flock of Katahdin Ewes? Theyre so cute! And what are the pros and cons of this crossing? And do you ship to the northeast?
I started with a Painted Desert cross, so never had the purebred. I wanted the coloring (which I got!) But wanted to keep the polled(naturally hornless) Katahdin, and also I just love the Katahdins so much! So there isn't a whole lot of Painted Desert, or Dorper blood in my flock, they are mostly Katahdin. Though the color still stays pretty well! My new Brown and white paint Ram, he is full /Registered Katahdin. The Brown & brown paints are a Katahdin color. The Blacks /& Black Paints are from the Painted Desert and/or Dorper. I have not shipped before. But I imagine it would be possible. The crosses are great! I actually like crossbreds, as they tend to have highbred vigor. The only thing I work to stay away from is too much Dorper blood, for our super wet PNW weather. the Dorper are not very parasite resistant, and they don't have good hooves. They tend to get hoofrot badly in my wet area. I didn't have purebred Painted Desert sheep, so I don't know how their hooves are.
@@NorthFork-Ranch I appreciate your detailed reply it's very helpful as I get ready to embark on this journey when I relocate to the homestead in another 18 months. Well, that was fun. I’m hesitant to get Goats but the more I watch videos like this closer I get thank you.

You are an amazing young woman! New subscriber and I so enjoyed this video! This video is a keeper!

Excellent video! I have a question. Well, two questions, actually. What are the two flowers (the white and purple ones) near your Rosemary patch at the 23:48 mark?
Thank you so much!! The Flowers are both varieties of Dahlias.
Would like some charted info on what each goat type give a day. Also how many times do you milk a day to get that yield. I'm trying to figure what type of goats to get.
Also thanks for content. Good info.
I worked at my university farm and oh my lord the calls we would constantly get for bleeding sheep that were just covered in paint.
Lol! I believe it! :) choose your colors carefully!
So excited to see next spring’s lambs! I just found your channel and I adore your sheep! I’ve got some Katahdin/wool crosses myself and I just love them
I cant wait either!! :) That is great! They are such amazing sheep! Thank you so much for watching!
Wish we lived closer! We are in southwest Virginia! I would absolutely love a starter flock from you! I’ve kept sheep for about five years and I’m getting away from wool sheep and adore Katahdins specifically the colored ones! And your sheep look so healthy!
Thank you!! Yeah, that would be a long way to ship for sure. I grew up with wool sheep, and if you had asked me if I liked sheep, I would have said no. But Katahdins are amazing! I Love the colors too!
Love your advice! I would absolutely love a more in depth explanation video of picking sheep based on conformation. I’ve been working with sheep for 7 years but I still struggle especially when looking at young lambs to make good solid picks based on feet and legs. Love your colorful sheep! I would love to live closer to you so I could scoop up some ewes and rams!
I will try to cover more in future videos! Thank you so much for watching/commenting!
Thank you for the video. We are new to katahdin sheep (and sheep overall) and just got our first ram. The chalk is a great idea because I haven't been able to observe any couplings.
Thank you!! Yes! They are very sneaky, unlike goats! Thank you so much for watching! So glad it helped!
So glad I found you! We are thinking of starting with Katahdins next year. We live a little inland from you, but still on the coastal side of the mountain and was worried about lots of rain in the winter. Do you have a newsletter/waiting list, etc.?
Hi Kriss! That is great!!! I have a Facebook page, and I have my waiting list there! If you can write me there and tell me what/how many lambs you would like. I will add you to my list! The Katahdins do SO well here in our wet PNW winters! They are the very best breed I have found ! North Fork Ranch Hair Sheep @FB facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057346973439
Thank you so much!
So glad you enjoyed!!!
I love how colorful these sheep are!
Thank you! I love the colors!
It looks like you run the buck with the does, I was told that the smell of the buck would make the milk bad. Is that correct? Or is it an old wives tale? I just subscribed because of your beautiful soul, I am a 70 year old that still loves to milk by hand. For the same reasons you stated, I love the time with my goats and it my quiet time as well. The morning milking gives me time to plan my day, the evening making calms my mind. Thank you for your beautiful video.
Awe I love this comment!! Thank you so much!! Yes! its such a relaxing quiet time!! ❤ It can make the milk strong, but I think time of year plays a big role, most the year the bucks are not in rut or smelly. And my milk is really mild! With the buck anti-breeding harness on them they are with the does, but unable to breed them. They are also a lot more laid back that way, compared to bucks that are in a pen, seeing and hearing the does, but unable to get to them. I believe that the main key to mild milk is based on the goat herself!! I have had wonderful milk with NO strong flavor from one goat..... and the next doe had such bad milk I couldn't stand to drink it.....two goats in the same herd, eating the same food, handling the milk the same way, and yet there was no comparison in the flavor! So mild milk is something I breed/select for. And the Mini Saanens have really nice milk!
@@NorthFork-Ranch thank you for such a detailed response. This helps me tremendously, I can now let my Buck hang out with my does. All will be happier. You’re a sweetheart.
@@learning2no You are so welcome! I do totally recommend the anti breeding harness if you let him live with them though! So that they don't get pregnant too young or too often...both are really hard on does but I'm sure you know that :)
@@NorthFork-Ranch i can’t believe how inexpensive the anti breeding aprons are.
Amazing!❤❤
Thank You So much!!!!!
What do you put the rennet into? And what measurements?
I put it into 1/4 cup water....then mix the water in so it mixes evenly. The bottle will tell you how much rennet to use, I personally use a bit more than they say.
I would cave in and give Harrison some of the milk 😂❤
🤣 LOL I know! He got milk for a long time though, and he has to be a big boy now! He was the cutest baby! And his FAVORITE thing was to go to town with me in the car! He would run and jump in, when he saw me get into the car! He was very good about wearing his seatbelt too ;) Shotgun was his fav and he would just lay down, in his seatbelt and enjoy the ride! ....I got some fun comments from the people that saw him waiting for me in the car 😅
He's quite the personality from the sounds of it 😂. I'm seriously thinking of having a milk goat. Do they fare better with another goat for company. I've got a gorgeous dog and I wondered if goats and dogs tolerated each other.

Aloha from Hawaii Big Island Waimea, I loved this video. I was just informed by a AI specialist about this beautiful Fjord breed. I've been looking for a shorter horse breed but, with draft characteristics. They told me to try to research Fjords. I want a horse that is good temperament short like 15 to 14.3 hand size. That can handle bigger riders like 250lbs. Short, stocky, strong and girthy. Strong enough to drag calves for branding. I would like to get more information about this breed and experience. If you would like to share. Mahalo.
We were just visiting the Hamakua Coast in April and really enjoyed the area and farms in Waimea 💝 Fjords do very well with cows, are incredibly intelligent and agile. Please check out our 2 videos th-cam.com/video/JLpaAirlJQ4/w-d-xo.html

@NorthFork-Ranch Wow really? That's awesome! That's so cool that you were here. Yes Mahalo I'll watch the videos. I'm really starting to fall in love with this breed. The only thing is I won't be able to have a pure breed. Which is ok. I'm going to start looking for semen straws. I hope to find a drafty characteristic stud. I have a hawaiian mustang mare Waipio horse and a quarter horse mare.
Was great to see your goat program. My daughter and I raised purebred Nubian dairy goats. What a joy that was. My beautiful buck was many times Grand Champion in WA and OR. Many of our does and kids were Champions, (even State Champions!) That was 20 years ago! I'm 75 now, no goats, but will always love the years spent with our girls and boys!!!❤ Sweet to see you love and care for your girls so much!!!❤❤❤
Deborah I love that!! What great memories! Goats and such a joy and so much fun! I am sure your daughter will always remember getting to do that with you! I know I will always remember my early years with my Mom and raising our goats together! Thank you so much for your kind comment! In the process of getting a new goat video made! so stay tuned!!! ❤

This was a very beautiful video, really enjoyed it! 👏🏼your kindness resonates beautifully to your viewers!! She’s a pocket pet now 😂🫶🏼your horses are just beautiful!! ❤️
Thank you so much! And Yes its true! Such a special bond is built in those first few hours that last a lifetime!
Do ram lambs need to be separated from ewe lambs?
They do when they are a little older. In My area as long as I have adult Ewes away from the Rams first of July and Ewe Lambs out in August I'm good. The young Ram lambs start breeding at around 5 months of age. So they are ready to breed their first Fall.
lovely!!!!!
Thank you!
Fantastic job, tho i was concerned as you made the first pass 😅. I really like the way you accented the dorsal stripe, gonna try the same on my mule.
So beautiful and peaceful. ❤

Thank you!!!
Are you milking the ewes ?
Copper deficiency in that dark cow I think cuz of copper sheen
Thanks Dionne, but that is her natural coloring :) She is a lot darker and more Red than most Jerseys, I believe she has a little crossing in her background. Her Mother was dark also
New subscriber here! I've been looking into getting a few hair sheep and i was told Katahdin crossed with Barbados blackbelly are the perfect homestead sheep? Have you ever crossed them? Need all the help I can get. I know absolutely nothing about sheep. Great video, Thanks 🙏🕊
Hi Luke! That is exciting! I think you will LOVE Hair sheep! As for the cross, I haven't been that impressed with what I have seen of Blackbelly. I haven't had them personally, but someone I know has. And they seem to be a skittish breed, without much meat/muscle to them...so dont see a real good reason to add the crossing. I like a little Dorper crossed into the Katahdin just for a bigger, more meaty sheep. A the bit of Painted Desert I crossed in (only some of my flock has it) I did for adding coloring) If I were you, I would go straight Katahdin..... or Katahdin with no more than 1/4 Dorper. But also depends on where you live! As Dorpers seem to do fine in hotter drier areas. Hair Sheep are really easy! If you have had any livestock in the past, you should do just fine. Also feel free to ask me any questions you might have! I would love to help if I know the answer!
Ii just got my first sheep last week. I found this very reassuring. Thank You!
Congratulations Darlene!!! I'm so excited for you! I am sure you are going to love them! Also let me know if you ever have any questions I might be able to answer!
Thank You!
Great video! We have similar crosses. You spend a lot of time bonding with the lambs. Shouldn’t that be dedicated to the mom? Do you ever have issues with moms rejecting?
Thank you! I do spend some time bonding! Most all of my Momma's are really tame and bonded with me, so they dont mind me being there with their new babies, and it helps the lambs to get used to me when I'm there just after they are born! So in 20 years, I can count on one hand(or pretty close) the amount of rejected lambs. One year I had two Moms have twins and each reject one! that was shocking! But I figured out why. At that time I had them locked in a barn at night, the ewes both lambed in with the other sheep....all it takes is a lamb walking away and getting mixed with the flock, and some times the mom wont take it. So now I almost always let them lamb in the pasture where they can get away by themselves, OR if its bad weather I will have only a few moms in the barn, or else put the close ewes in a stall by themselves. room is very important! The other times was like if a ewe had triplets, or only milked form one side (mastitis damage) that I have had a reject or else had to take one for there to be enough milk..
Well that was an awesome "job" that needed doing ! Congrats to Zoe for a beautiful foal. Wonderful to see her complete trust in you with her brand new baby. It shows that you must treat her really well, just as you are now with the foal. His trust in you has already progressed so much in just one session. They're lucky to have you as their carer.
Thank you so much Allison!! ❤ They are AMAZING Horses!!!

You are very welcome! I know you wont be disappointed!! I cant recommend Katahdins enough!
Hello mam I'm a new subscriber ❤. How did you get a gallon of milk per goat? I'm interested to know ❤️. Goats in our area only produce 2 liters. I'm interested to know ❤️
Hello! The biggest thing for milk production is breeding! Lines that are bred especially for milk production. My goats are Dairy breeds, so their main purpose is milk, not meat. Also good feed makes a big difference! Grains make a big impact on the amounts also.
How do you get your goats to not kick? I have 2 that are fine but the third fights horribly no matter what I do
Hi Maria! Is it her first time(year) being milked? Most does will settle down as they get more comfortable and settled into a milking routine...Like Lindy, my Nigerian did. Two things I do when I have a bad kicker, is to use a small jar you can hold onto, and pour milk into a bigger jar each time you have enough....that way if the milk gets kicked and spilled, you don't lose it all. The second thing is to try to never lose hold of the teat when she kicks. That way she doesnt get the win of getting you off...and that will make them stop trying as hard if they never get you off. Talk to her, calm her. Tell her it's OK. If that doesn't work, you can always tie their foot back, just far enough that she can still stand on it, but can't kick forward. And over time they will stop kicking and you can stop tying it back. Also its SO important to stay calm and sweet and reassure them! Often people think they are being "bad" when really they are uncomfortable and nervous! Its in them to protect their milk for their baby!
