    I’ve always tried to be stoic. This summer was a tough one. I was diagnosed with a lifelong vestibular disorder called Ménière’s disease. It causes vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, a feeling of fullness in the ear. It also comes with frequent acute attacks of vertigo that are so bad that you can’t even crawl, vomiting, ceiling spinning vertigo and nystagmus. My last acute attack was 8 hours and took 5 plus days to fully recover both physically and emotionally. At one point this summer I lost half my hearing in my left ear. It’s definitely been difficult to remain stoic. I’ve had to go on a low inflammation diet, very low sodium and sugar, no caffeine or alcohol. My uncle told me that it’s all part of God’s plan for me. I’m not sure that I can believe in a god that makes these kinds of plans for people. I always struggled with that kind of faith anyway. It’s difficult to understand why these things happen to us.

      @@2141USMC thank you for sharing. I don’t have all of the answers, I have come to realize there are a lot of things we are not supposed to understand, we can just choose to accept the situation or not. If something is outside of our control we can surrender to it, if we want to make the most of it. I don’t know why some people have challenges that are perceived as much greater than others challenges…I’m still learning and growing. Peace to you and I hope you are able to receive grace in your situation.

      @@QuakeChallenge I have a funny memory from high school. Class S state championship game against Derryfield school. Everyone saw Jesus on the field. Everyone but me. I always wondered if there something wrong with me. I knew there wasn’t. I don’t know if I just felt left out but it was a turning point in my faith. I’m not sure the universe or god have any plans for me. Life is tough. You have to make the best of it. I had a lot of plans before this. There were days I thought I couldn’t even work anymore. That it would be impossible to support my family because I was so sick. I’ve managed to get things under control with diet and steroid injections into my eardrum. I have to stay positive because stress and fatigue cause inflammation and trigger acute vertigo attacks and start the whole cycle over. The steroids gave me most of my hearing back. There’s that!

    I love this! It’s true and I do believe that speaking out/getting it out by speaking or journaling or whatever is very powerful and sometimes necessary if you’ve hid a lot of emotional pain out of fear of rejection. Face the pain with the fear of rejection type of thing. 😎💓🌎 This is for wise and focused people though who know how to not get stuck and continue creating. I think we have to get “stuck” a lot tho, it’s how we practice and grow! Tolle is a wise man but he suffered a lot before coming to his way of life- something a lot of teachers forget to teach is the necessity of suffering is the gateway to peace!

    Physical pain is our body's way of directing attention to a part of the body that requires it. Emotional pain, (suffering), is the body's means of focusing on behavioral issues that require our attention. It is the body/mind's mechanism for course correction. Ekhart Tolle is mistaken in the idea that we have a choice in the matter. Anyone who adopts a sitting meditation practice can easily observe that we have no control over our thought processing. It's all done subconsciously.

    • @QuakeChallenge
      @QuakeChallenge 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@wthomas5697 his message is more about transcending thought and accepting the moment.

    • @wthomas5697
      @wthomas5697 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@QuakeChallenge That's just it, we can't "transcend thought". It's fundamental to our function as human beings. We evolved to think. You yourself can see that there is no mechanism for controlling thought. It arises from the subconscious. The most we can say is we become aware of the fact that we're thinking. We do so when we suffer our thinking. Or in other words, there is something about our current thought processing that has become problematic. It is inaccurate, not aligned with reality. There is no place where "choice" enters into the picture. Ekhart really doesn't go very deep into understanding what's actually going on here in us humans. Just curious, have you ever attended a vipassana meditation retreat, or a zen sesshin?

    • @QuakeChallenge
      @QuakeChallenge 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@wthomas5697 we are capable of creating periods of time where we are free from thoughts, as short as they may be, we can cultivate that practice. We also have the capacity to control our thoughts to a point, such as what we choose to dwell on. We can’t control or predict every thought that arises, I agree that it isn’t possible.

    • @wthomas5697
      @wthomas5697 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@QuakeChallenge Close examination reveals the effort involved in any act of creation on our part. A moment in time in which we are not engaging memory, (thought), is not associated with this effort. The experience cannot be "willed" into existence. Which is why it is referred to as grace. The absence of the associated effort is ultimately why we have a preference for the specific state of being. If you really pay attention you can see that you don't control any thought that arises. Never have, never will. I'd challenge you to find one. It's all cause and effect. The result of subconscious processing. Which, by definition, we are not privy to. As an example, right now are you even aware of the next thought you are going to have? If not, how can you say it's of your own volition? Consider that all of your so called choices are thoughts as well. I'm saying your choices, all of them, are driven by the mechanism of suffering. Another useful thing to observe is what we are referring to when we say we exhibit control. Is it simply a matter of whether we are conscious of our suffering, or not...?

    I took a coparenting class a few years ago. I was being bombarded with emails and texts full of complaints and threats of court. I learned to stop communicating by text and then answer my emails one day a week unless they were time sensitive. This gives me time to be thoughtful in my responses. I started thinking about how to make my responses as short as possible while still communicating effectively. It gives me time to think if a response is necessary at all. The biggest part of this change is that has also helped my ex wife learn to communicate more effectively and less frequently. There’s no reason to complain or threaten if I’m not going to respond. I no longer have anxiety and worry every time I get an email from her.
