A video snaphot of our narrowboat journey through the canals and rivers of England. This recent venture into the world of TH-cam and video is a learning curve I have yet to master but hopefully it will improve in time.
Like so many others, my healthy obsession with boating started at an early age with family holidays on the Norfolk Broads in the 50's and 60's and being transported into this watery world by reading the entire series of children' books by Arthur Ransome. Further Inspired by the vision of LTC Rolt and Robert Aitken I joined the IWA as a junior member when canal restoration was in its infancy and thankfully their work continues today.
As for our boating, we have been fortunate enough to cruise and explore many waterways over the years in a variety of craft, not only in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland but also further afield in France, Italy, Germany, Greece and Turkey and this journey continues ....

The Kennet & Avon Canal
We've not posted in a while but our journey still continues. The cruise started from Stone in Staffordshire last year but we actually start this video from Oxford on the River Thames, continuing down the full length of the Kennet & Avon Canal until it joins the River Avon at Bath. It's a tough canal for two people as the double locks come thick and fast, there is limited moorings and the canal is quite overgrown in places. Looking back it is still very picturesque but it can be hard work. The trip itself spanned two seasons and we over-wintered at Caen Hill Marina. This however was only part of this years cruise as we prepare Archimedes for the trip from Bath to Bristol, then to Portishead and beyond, but more of that later.

River Ribble - Southbound
มุมมอง 3933 ปีที่แล้ว
The return trip across the River Ribble was so much better than the one we made a few weeks earlier when the rain was extreme to say the least (Ribble Link 1). This meant we were able to record the crossing and give an insight of what its like to cross in both those conditions. All bookings are made through the CRT which are only possible on certain days due to the tidal conditions. There are l...

Returning to the basin at the head of Savick Brook for the alloted time we were then delayed for two days because of adverse weather conditions. Fortunately the weather cleared sufficiently enough for CRT to release us in convoy.
The Glasson Branch 6
มุมมอง 3073 ปีที่แล้ว
Before crossing back over the River Ribble theres just one part of the Lancaster Canal that still needs to be explored. The Glasson Branch is the only part of the canal that has locks, of which there are seven. They are double locks and we were fortunate enough to have a family wait for us when they realised we were following only a lock behind. On arrival in Glasson we had to find the "Port of...
Lancaster Canal 5 Carnforth to Tewitfield
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Leaving Carnforth the Canal steadily winds its way north, passing under the M6 before reaching the end of navigation at Tewitfield. Sadly a few miles short of its original terminus. This in not quite the end of our cruise along the Lancaster Canal. Retracing our steps we then return to Galgate as we have yet to explore the Glasson Branch. #narrowboat #canal #LancasterCanal
Lancaster Canal 4 - Lancaster to Carnforth
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Having spent a couple of days in Lancaster we head north again, crossing the River Lune over John Rennies Aqueduct before arriving at Hest Bank. Being so close to the sea we moor here and take a short walk to the pebble beach overlooking Morecambe Bay. Then on through Bolton - le - Sands before arriving in Carnforth. #narrowboat #canals #LancasterCanal
Lancaster Canal 3 - Garstang to Lancaster
มุมมอง 2.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Having stocked up with Garstang Blue Cheese, water biscuits and something to wash it down with, we leave the pleasant town of Garstang, passing the entrance to the Glasson Branch (covered later) at Galgate we were disappointed to find the canalside cafe we visited previously had closed but it was a convenient and a good place to moor overnight before heading towards Lancaster once more. The app...
Lancaster Canal 2 - Moons Bridge to Garstang
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
From Moon's Bridge we continue on our journey passings "Guys Owd Thatched Hamlet" at Bilsborrow, Barton Grange which is so much more than a good Garden Centre (it even has its own Curling Rink) before arriving in Garstang. Well worth a stop here to check out the shops, pick up some Garstang Blue cheese (essential), and call at one of the two supermarkets to stock up on provisions
Lancaster Canal 1 Preston to Moons Bridge
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Leaving the moorings at the top of the Ribble Link we first turn right towards Preston and call at the nearest CRT Service Block before "winding" at the canal terminus. Retracing our steps, we once again pass the entrance to "The Link" . Another damp start but fortunately the weather settled down as we continued our journey north. The Lancaster is a much quieter canal and lock free all the way ...
Ribble Link 2 (Savick Brook, Northbound)
มุมมอง 3983 ปีที่แล้ว
Following an extremely wet crossing of the River Ribble and after a change into dry clothes, the weather fortunately warms up for the second part of a journey that takes us along Savick Brook. We waited on the holding jetty whilst CRT staff prepared the locks ahead of us. Once given the all clear we arrive at lock 8 and from there we follow a narrow and winding channel. It's a further 4 locks b...

Normally we would just moor up when the weather gets bad. When you have booked a scheduled passage with CRT you have no option but to go with whatever weather is thrown at you and yes it threw it down, getting progressively worse as we crossed the River Ribble. After on overnight stop near Dunham Park we leave the rural stretches of the Bridgewater Canal behind us as we enter the more built up suburbs of South Manchester. Trent & Mersey Canal - Heartbreak Hill by Narrowboat
Just got back to Oxford from Lechlade in my 55 foot narrowboat, went up last week in a strong headwind and showers the bendy river was a challenge but good fun, my 4.15 Lltr tractor engine conversion came into its own, Lechlade is a beautiful place worth a look and the river seems cleaner and the route so peaceful with beautiful wild moorings on high banks with kingfisher nest holes and jumping fish. Thanks for sharing your film.
It’s a shame about your weather but yes, it’s a totally different river upstream from Oxford and like you say it’s just so peaceful. We are currently on the K&A and will be heading north again during the summer. Have fun and thanks for your comment
What camera do you use please?
That was with a Xiaomi Yi cheap action cam on Timelapse. It was always recording because it would take ages to film it all in real time although later clips are a combination of both. I now use an AKASO v50 action cam and a Canon G7x. Not posted in a while but still cruising and filming our journey
I wish to have a life like this.
Am doing this journey this weekend, thank you for your vlog its really helpful 😊
There’s a great pub in Lower Heyford. Hopefully the river level and the flow across the head of Aynho (lozenge) lock to Nell lock will be settled. We passed through there again heading south to the K&A this summer. Enjoy the weekend
So pleased it brought back happy memories. It’s a lovely canal side village that we passed through again earlier this year when travelled south again. Always worth a stop.
Brings back so many happy memories of when my late husband and l had our narrowboat….l loved Cropredy🌟🌟🌟
Thanks for Posting this video. I was a Skipper for Jacobs Boats, Windsor (now French Brothers) in 1960s-70s - would have been nice to have seen some slower normal speed sections. I see you either ran out or stopped just at Windsor Racecourse Landing Stage where we would take the 'Punters' from Windsor Riverside Railway Station to Windsor Racecourse Island on Race Days. Boveney Lock from Windsor Promenade was our regular (in that time) 35min trip turning in Boveney Weir Stream. We also would run up to Marlow on Specials. Or Maidenhead on Coach Trips and venture down (for annual work on the larger boats - Windsor Castel - Empress of India - Windsor Belle - to Kingston. Coach loads from Egham Runneymead. Salters Steamers worked Oxford to Hampton Court - some smaller passenger vessels worked above Oxford I believe. Once again thank you for posting. Michael
Thanks for your fascinating response. Yes, on that occasion we turned at Windsor but we first cruised the Thames in a hire boat called Runnymede Empress that we picked up from a boatyard in Egham during the 70’s. Plans for next years journey are still in the planning 👍
very nice video I live in High Wycombe near Marlow. Always want to sell in the Thames river but don't have enough Information. if I import my personal boat from abroad how can I enter the Thames river could you please let me know do I need special permission from the authorities or if there is a selling point where I can go and lower my boat into the water and explore Thames river.
Thanks Ali, You can purchase a licence for boating on the non-tidal River Thames (above Teddington Lock) from the Environment Agency online but you will need to ensure you have both third party insurance and a boat safety certificate but they will advise you on what is required. As for launching that really depends on the size of your boat. For smaller boats there are a number of public slipways http:/www.boatlaunch.co.uk/ For larger boats you will need to contact one of the many boatyards who will have facilities to crane you in. I hope you get to explore this lovely river. Chris
Somewhat fast - but most entertaining!
Yes indeed. The only way I could capture as much of the river as possible without it lasting too long. Ive since used more real time footage in recent recordings :).
I've cycled many times past the holybush then to leek tunnel awsome video 👍👍👍💯💯💯
Great little pub to break your bike ride. Glad you enjoyed sharing our journey
@@narrowboatclips4116 it is I gave up drinking 17 years ago I sit at the pub for a rest and have.a banana lol I've done videos myself off my action cam along there plus done RUDARD Lake from leek tunnel amazing along there love ya video too 👍👍💯💯
I’ve been to Rudyard by road a few times and it’s a great area. Will have to seek out your vids
@@narrowboatclips4116 I did a video or the big MANSION HOUSE by Rudyard Lake but hopefully when weather pics up ioe do a video by the mansion House 👍👍💯
why don't you do Henley to Eton or Datchet to London
I know Hurley next Marlow and Eton next Windsor
Thanks for you comment This was a wonderful trip and one we hope to do again. Earlier this year we covered the River Severn, Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, River Avon to Stratford and the BCN
1st Marlow 2nd Bourne End 3rd Cookham 4th Maidenhead and 5th Windsor
Marlow, Bourne End, Cookham, Maidenhead, and Windsor
Thanks for your "like" Kasim. It was a very enjoyable cruise and great to moor up at all those places and many more besides as we continue to explore the waterways.
@@narrowboatclips4116 you welcome
Frogall tunnel. Was your boat too tall or too square at the top or both? Was your visit before or after the water level was adjusted?
Hello David, This was in the Spring of 2019 and despite having the water reduced as part of the restoration a few years ago we didnt fit through the guage at the bottom end of the previous lock and didnt attempt to get through for fear of damage or getting stuck. This will have been our second visit to the Caldon. The first being in the 80's and that was before the restoration took place.
That’s the calmest ribble link vlogs I’ve ever seen. Well done. One of my dreams in life to do that. Great vlog.
It’s well worth doing and it’s not half as bad as some guys would have you believe. So pleased you like the vlog 😀
Incomparably better weather! That I Could cope with... 👍
Yes indeed. A lot dryer than our first crossing. In fairness though, we enjoyed both trips but we didn’t have to abandon filming because of the weather this time.
We'll, that's a bit different! Nice to have the volunteers there to help. 👍
We are always pleased to see the volunteers and CRT to help us through. Yes, it was a bit different and the only staircase locks that we’ve had to reverse into! 😀
Love the song! So fitting for very end of the canal system. Thanks for your videos.
Thanks Jason. So pleased you enjoy them. They are not intended to be a vlog in the usual sense but merely a record of our most recent journeys that we are more than happy to share with others 😊
Wow! Keeping big company at Glasson Basin! Glad to read the cruiser was helpful in your navigation. 👍
Until the Ribble Link opened the Lancaster Canal was quite isolated and is one of the few canals that still has more fibreglass cruisers than narrow boats. It’s always good to share a double lock if we can and it was good of them to wait for us
I would like to see the full length version in real time please? There are many sad chaps and chappesses who will love it! We did Teddington to Lechlade around the time you filmed this and it brings back amazing memories especially this part of the journey. We couldn’t believe how quiet the upper Thames is even at the height of summer. Shhhh... let’s keep it to ourselves...
....Its great we both got to enjoy the upper reaches in the glorious sunshine we had in 2018. Sadly I dont have real time footage but I take the point and most of my more recent footage is now shot in real time. The channel was intended to be a record of our journeys to look back on and when we did the Thames timelapse seemed to be the only way to cover as much of it as possible. I would do it differently now though. Interestingly I see from your channel you also took Lola on the Great Ouse so you may recognise where we were from our ID photo taken in 2016. I only have stills from that journey but at some point hope to put them together as a "Cruising Route" video. For the moment Im still catching up on last years cruise during lockdown. Enjoy your boating! Chris
@@narrowboatclips4116 Oh! :-( I was hoping to see some slower shots as I kept pausing your footage to see if we were moored at various places when you passed! Yes Lola was bought especially to do the Fens. She was on the Thames with a license for the rest of the year, so we 'did' that first. I've now completed Red Sands to Lechlade in various craft over the years. Having now done most of the Fens in 2019 we put her up for sale to continue campervanning in Europe and she sold eventually in 2020. So we have a shiney new van conversion, but no permission to leave yet! UK will be revisited this year instead when we can. Looked at your page and yes The Great Ouse, recognised! At the moment we are doubting our decision to get back to motorhoming as we have no boat apart from an old inflatable in the shed! Sunny river days are great! But Europe Aires and warmth call more.... Remember Shhsss about the Upper Thames! The water was so clear... Paul
@@paulsparks5071 We are just waiting for restrictions to lift to continue our journey. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you get to explore Europe in the camper. Enjoy the adventure!!
@@narrowboatclips4116 Having now watched more of your videos I realise I may change my view. I think the way you have edited and shot the different uploads is actually better for you and probably better for other viewers! There are so many canal videos now to Wade through that a speeded up version with occasional stops is probably more useful to all of us. Especially for you to remember your journey around UK. A continuous video just would never be watched, none of us have that much time. So I would now vote to keep the time lapse ones..... an ‘about turn’ I should be a politician! Looking forward to more of your great videos. Thanks.
A lovely jaunt, clearly not during the current miserable winter and Covid lockdown... When was this shot?
These were taken in August and September before things started to spike again. Reliving the summer by editing these clips has kept me sane during lockdown. Now looking forward to getting away again now 😊
let's see them new videos bro
Thanks for posting ;-) enjoying my lockdown with ya vid and a beer!
My pleasure, stay safe and enjoy your beer !! :)
Do you know how much Traveling Time it is from Oxford to Teddington Lock Please ? THANK YOU
Yes of course. According to www.canalplan.uk which I recommend you have a look at, it would take a little over 4 days (at 7 hours cruising a day) to cover the 92 miles and 32 locks between East street moorings in Oxford to Teddington lock. Thats quite a punishing schedule though as you have to consider lock opening hours and give yourself time to visit the vary many towns and villages on the way. With these figures in mind give yourself as much time as you can afford and you will not be disappointed. Enjoy your Boating, Chris
@@narrowboatclips4116 Thank You, ALSO, Do You Know, Teddington Lock to Open Sea ( Thames Barrier ) the Distance Please ? To Go Thru the Thames Port of London Authority Section, Do You HAVE to Be Yacht Master Qualified etc ? Security Checked Etc ? THANK YOU Again.
Hi, you can get from Teddington Lock to Limehouse basin ( before the Thames barrier) in a day but this Section is tidal and needs careful timing. You don’t need a yacht masters certificate but you will need a vhf operators licence, a marine band radio and a suitable anchor of course. Travelling downstream is more difficult because of the tidal flow and you must reach Limehouse Lock before the water drops too low to gain access to the basin. St Pancras Cruising Club do an excellent guide with lots of information that you can find online. Definitely one to research well before attempting. We’ve done the trip travelling upstream but you do need to take care.
Hope you didn't inconvenience the geniuses in the plastic boats who don't care about speed restrictions too much...
Haha, well I hope not, we do after all share a common interest and I’m basically obsessed with anything that floats. Whilst on the Thames I took a tour around Peter Freebody’s classic boatyard in Hurley. Beautifully restored river craft to drool over!! How sad is that! :)
I like your vids. Lotta scenery pleasant music no talking. Love it
Thank you, So pleased you enjoy them. They are not so much a vlog but a “video log” of our journey we can share with others. More to follow as we catch up on editing. Stay Safe :)
How brilliant you are with your detailed labelling it makes all the difference - thank you
Woooooooooooooooooooooooo
Thanks Norma, we like to keep a record and share our more recent canal journeys. It's good to hear they also brought back some good memories for you as well!
Amazing video, brings back many lovely memories of the area
Nice to see my old stomping ground. Thanks for the memories. Btw. How far in the future was this? Lol.
Happy memories for us too and pleased it brought back a few of your own. I see you watched it to end and picked up on the "typo." Well spotted!. I'm not sure I will be about in "2108" but am sure it will look much the same as it did in "2018".. Lol.!! 😂😂
Can I ask how long the journey took you?
According to "canalplan.eu" it with take approx 26hrs cruising from the junction at Etruria to Froghall and back (inc Leek branch) but that doesnt allow for any delays or stopping off anywhere. It depends therefore on how many hours you want to cruise each day (we do embassasingly few) Judging by your Twitter account you may want to take a day for the "Churnet Valley Railway"
@@narrowboatclips4116 thanks. You read my mind.

I'm glad you like it Chris. An area you will know well. At the moment we are missing not being on the boat. Take care and keep safe... Chris
Very nice. Working my way through all of your videos. It’s all we can do at the moment, we can’t even visit our boat :(
Thanks, We're in the same boat then...... Or should I say the same marina! It's bad not being able to check that everything is ok. Looks like we will have to make do with virtual cruising for the moment. I've still got more editing from last year to catch up on as well. Take care guys
Perfect for any one about to do the same cruise especially with the vlog before throu stone. But I cannot find the one after Middelwich
I try and cover as much of the route as possible as a record of our most recent journeys and am happy to share them with others. The next in the sequence is: th-cam.com/video/0SemMeX-VQ0/w-d-xo.html that takes us from Middlewich to Anderton Boat Lift and the River Weaver. Our plans changed mid-season so we detoured to the Llangollen Canal. Our plan is to return this season, complete our coverage of the River Weaver and also the remaining stretch of the T&M through Barnton and Preston Brook Tunnels to its junction with the Bridgewater Canal and beyond. Enjoy your boating !!

Chris & Sam, Thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed it!
What a fabulous video.
Many thanks for your comment.
Looking to coming back to England perhaps a caravan and a little boat, I need your wife to help me navigate those locks she is good at it lol! Looks so beautiful, Oxfordshire was my old home.
Oxfordshire is a lovely part of the country and the canal weaves it's path through the most rural areas of the county. My wife has always preferred to do the locks but we have a system in flights whereby Pam will set the lock and once the levels have risen sufficently will go to the next as I finish off and close that gates. Its a system that seems to work for us.
@@narrowboatclips4116 Can you live on the boat year round with a permit? Are you on the boat as a full timer?
@@ladyjayne777 You can live on the boat all the time although you do need to have either a permanent mooring or class yourself as a "continuous cruiser" both of which require a licence from Canal and River Trust. We don't live on the boat permanently, but do work on the boat during the winter months and head out over the summer months putting in at different marinas every now when we have other things that need us to be elsewhere.
Living the dream
:-) aaaah, canal time! :-)
Hi, I am planning a trip for April. How long does it take for the return trip
Hi Craig, From East Street Mooring in Oxford to Lechlade and back, according to 'Canalplan.eu" which I find a great tool for route planning, it is 59 miles, 22 locks and would take approximately 23 hours of cruising time. So the number of days depends largely on your stamina. We have a fairly low tolerance and prefer to average a measly 2.5 cruising hours a day but that enables us to spend time visiting places along the route in the knowledge we can always make up time if we decide to stay somewhere a little longer. Enjoy ! Chris
