Yamaha XJ 900 engine with 100.000 km on the clock, burns oil on cylinder 1 and 2 I suspect that it is the valve stem seals that has gone hard over time, and because of that, oil can leak through the valve stem into the cylinder 1 and 2 when the bike is parked on the side stand. but since the engine top end is disassembled, I thought it would make sense to check the cylinder, pistons and rings

I just balanced the carburettors and adjusted the idle mixture as I described in one of my earlier videos. After each completed adjustment I like to confirm that I got it right, by start driving without using any throttle, to check that all 4 cylinders pull evenly - if they don't run evenly, the bike will stall when performing this little procedure. Have fun keeping the old bikes alive 👍

    Hi Erik thanks for the video, I'm planning on doing this to check how my valves are, and clean up/change head gasket on my xj750rh. Is it possible to do this from the bike on center stand? Maybe secured with weights or something? I don't have any lift and I'm on my own, also my shims are way off right now, dummy question but should I change them after valve lapping and rebuild to check clearance again? Or should I do it before? I know it's kinda stupid but since I'm not sure if it matters I'd rather ask!

    • @Lorddxt

    How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days? Does it need much choke?

    • @Lorddxt
      @Lorddxt 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It usually fires right up. After a longer stand still, I flip the fuel tap to PRI to prime the carburettors, wait about a minute, full choke, and usually it starts within a few seconds

  • @FrankyBmagic
    @FrankyBmagic ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the reason the carburetors become unsynchronized in the first place and is this preventable? Also, can it occur at any given time or does it usually happen when the engine exceeds a certain mileage? Thanks for a great video!

    • @Lorddxt
      @Lorddxt ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several reasons the carburettors get out of sync Uneven engine wear, so each cylinder doesn't make the exact same amount of vacuum as the other cylinders Valve adjustment, which effects valve duration, which again affect cylinder vacuum Carburettor wear Changes in airflow - new Vs dirty air filter or micro leaks So no you can't avoid the carburettor from slowly getting out of sync, but the better you maintain your bike, usually less adjustment are required

    • @FrankyBmagic

      @@Lorddxt Thank you for all this information! I also have a 1984 XJ900F that I purchased last year. Came with a swapped engine but 100% original and museum registered. • @Lorddxt
      @Lorddxt ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually you don't notice, because it happens gradually over thousands of km / miles. But over time the bike just doesn't run as sweet as it used to do. If you follow the service chart, you will check the valve clearance for each 12.000 km / 8.000 miles, and after a valve adjustment, you should balance / sync your carburettors

    • @FrankyBmagic
      @FrankyBmagic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Lorddxt Hello again sir! In the "Haynes Service & Repair" manual it states that the carburetor synchronization should be done every 6000km or 6 months. The more often the better I assume but what is your opinion on this?

    • @Lorddxt
      @Lorddxt 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I usually synchronize my carburettor as a part of the service I give it every time I change the oil. Which is usually less than the 6000 km stated in the Haynes manual. But if I were to pay a shop to do it, I would likely follow the Haynes suggests 6000 or once a year
