Luanda is a city that will surprise you with its history, culture, economy, diversity and challenges. It is a city that has experienced colonization, war, reconstruction and growth. It is a city that offers a striking contrast between the modern and the old, the rich and the poor, the dynamic and the quiet. You want to know more ? 1. Luanda was founded in 1576 by the Portuguese navigator Paulo Dias de Novais, who gave it the name São Paulo da Assunção de Loanda. It was an important trading post for the Portuguese empire, particularly for the slave trade to Brazil. Luanda remained under Portuguese rule until Angola's independence in 1975.
2. Luanda is the largest seaport in Angola and one of the busiest in Africa. It is located on the bay of Luanda, which is bordered by several historical monuments, such as the São Miguel fortress, built in the 16th century to protect the city from attacks by the Dutch and French, or the Nossa Senhora da Nazaré church, which dates from the 17th century.
3. Luanda is the seat of the Angolan government and is home to several political institutions, such as the presidential palace, the national parliament, the supreme court or the central bank. The city also hosts several foreign embassies, international organizations and media outlets.
