Warmest greetings to you all and thank you for visiting. I hope to add some of my videos to this channel relating to the subject of trains. This mainly includes the Underground but also National Rail too. When time permits, I hope to edit and add more videos for you to enjoy.
‘92 Tube Stock Test Train With AC Traction Equipment: The ‘92s’ New Sound!
Listen really carefully to the sound this train makes, folks. It is no ordinary 1992 tube stock. As part of the Central Line Improvement Programme, the traction equipment is being upgraded from direct current to alternating current. This includes new control equipment and motors. The ‘92 stock has suffered with the reliability of its DC equipment for many years and when the AC equipment is fitted to all trains, this should improve matters a lot. This is a test train consisting of all 8 cars having the new equipment fitted. It sounds a bit like an ‘09 stock to me, possibly like the S stock too. What do you think?
Apologies for this being a very brief video as it was a bit of a fluke I captured it. As such it was captured on my mobile, so there is no wind sock to cut out the wind sounds. I hope I can convey the new sounds these old trains will be making in the not-too-distant future!

On the evening of Thursday 24th May 2018, the last functioning 'A' stock unit 5234 ran under its own power for the last time. The run started at Neasden depot at about 2300hrs and ran to Ruislip siding, where it reversed and headed back to Rayners Lane and then down the Piccadilly line to Ealing Common depot. Yes it is (apart from trams and Newcastle Metro). What’s happening here is the DC in the conductor rails is converted to AC in the train to drive the new AC motors. The theory is that AC motors are more reliable.

I will always remember receiving "Tube Trains Under London" by J Graeme Bruce at Christmas 1980...I was 4 and 3 quarters...John Lennon had just been shot, and my dad's dad had just died...amidst all the emotional turmoil, the sheer catharsis of that blue book, the grainy pics of then nearly-new 1972 and 1973 silverfishes and the excitement of going up to town at the weekend from sleepy Stoneleigh..(ctd. page 94)
Just very ridiculously these trains running poor condition of the services. People are anxious requestly... It being trying people goes work or schools, it could be always late! That's say days is it now, huh!! 😖

Sadly not any more. This service last ran from West Ealing at 11:17hrs, Wednesday 7th December 2022.

It's strange - it sounds just like an s stock, but still sounds like the 92 stock when coasting!
The coasting is from the wheels and that compressor
I wonder if the plan is to eventually replace the 72 stock on the Bakerloo with these refurbished 92s as whatever becomes the new Central line stock is introduced. The Bakerloo line is surely one of the least-used lines on the network and doesn't justify the cost of new stock to replace the life expired 72s in these rough times. The 73s are in good shape but at their age will not be refurbished again so I can't see them replacing the 72s. With the coming of the Elizabeth line the Piccadilly may now be seen as the principal east-west tube in London, especially as it serves Heathrow, hence why the new tube stock is going there first. Otherwise, with the 73s looking like they'd be able to take another 10 years of service, the obvious choice (to me anyway) would be to replace the 92 stock, and then have the newly-refurbished 92s replace the life expired and elderly 72s on the Bakerloo that desperately need to be replaced at this point. While some of the 92's equipment is unreliable, this can be patched through refurbishment and otherwise they will still have another 20 years in them yet, which is more than enough for the relatively quiet Bakerloo line.
There is no way for 92 stock to replace the 72 stock. Besides much like for the 2009 stock, the 92 stock won't fit in the bakerloo line tunnels
I dont unserstand why theyre doing this considering these trains are going to be replaced by the "New Tube for London"
That’ll be quite a long way off yet. The reliability of the DC traction system is not great on these trains so it is hoped that this will improve that, so it is therefore worthwhile doing it.

@@IK_ldn707 Not only that but with the new motors there have been problems with the trains. One of my mates is a Test Train Op who’s been driving it… No real improvement as yet, but that should change.

This personally to me seems fake. The rails there are still in their same format, how will they run ac through it when the other trains need dc? I can’t image they closed the entire line for this. Let me know if you have any more info.

It’s a test train fitted with new traction motors and control gear. This gives it a more modern sound.
Are there ex Victoria line 1967 stock on the Bakerloo but in the middle as they were automatically operated or just few ex Northern line 1972mk1 stock and 1972mk2 stock?
I don’t think there are, but happy to be corrected on this one by any who know better. There were some 72s that went in the middle of 67 trains. I think some of those then supplemented the trains on the Bakerloo.
