So This Is My Why
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 พ.ค. 2020
The So This Is My Why podcast features inspiring people about how they found their whys (i.e. passion/purpose in life), and how they turned their whys into realities, providing the blueprint for others to do the same.
Conning the Art World: How He Sold Fake Art For Millions & Escaped the Mafia & FBI! | Ken Perenyi
In the 1970s, a young American with no formal art training decided to start painting forgeries.
For decades, his creations fooled experts in top auction houses like Christie's & Sotheby's, hung in prestigious galleries, and sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars (up to $717k per painting!).
This is the story of Ken Perenyi - one of the world's most notorious art forger who has been chased by the FBI & the Mafia for years - and got away with it.
Scott free.
When the statute of limitation passed for his “crimes”, Ken then published a book telling everyone exactly how he did it. 😂
(Talk about giving everyone the finger!!)
And lest you wonder whether that’s all there is to Ken’s story, believe me.
It is not.
Ken’s childhood was spent hanging out with Tony, an influential Mafia member, who introduced him to the world of fine art.
He was so enamoured with art that he taught himself to paint. To crack the paintings and mimic the black spots that flies would leave on very, very old paintings.
He was also neighbours with Andy Warhol.
One memorable incident: He was sharing a flat with Tony who found an abandoned bathtub in the streets.
They didn’t have a bathtub so they decided to steal one (in a stolen car) and install it themselves in their flat.
The installation wasn’t done well.
Water leaked.
The flooring cracked.
And one evening, everything - the ceiling, bathtub and all - crashed from the first floor down to the ground floor, on top of a bustling Jewish restaurant.
Needless to say, Ken and Tony were kicked out of said flat.
And he spent a miserable 2 weeks wandering around New York before eventually finding a new place that would lead him to Roy Cohen’s doors.
*
This is just the tiniest glimpse of Ken’s life and it’s so epic - we ended up having a 3 hour conversation! - that I had to split his story into 2 parts.

Quite a story, and quite an ego. I have rarely seen a personality be so self-aggrandizing. I'm surprised that he is not either in prison or dead.
Elmyr de Hory was the true master at forgery. Knew him in Ibiza.
Wow what was he like?
I've watched a few videos on forgers along with a great book on Van Meergen who forged Vermeers and sold them to Hermann Goerring. To a person they have an arrogance about them that they are brilliant artists who should regarded along with Rembrandt because they can copy the same technique. They each choose to ignore that great art is not just a technical exercise, it's an emotional, intellectual and deeply personal connection of the psyche. None of these forgers have shown that have that capability.
You’ll find that they also feel a deep emotional connection and love for their work too Obviously not advocating doing illegal things here! 😅
That’s not the vibe I’m hearing from him. Still, as it turns out, he’s a criminal who has not an iota of remorse for robbing people, for driving his landlord into bankruptcy, etc. He’s gleeful about his association with the mob, and scum like Roy Cohen.
Very interesting
Glad to hear! 😆
love this content, Thanks Peter for the honest and sincere sharing. however, the host, OMG is the MIC working well or you're speaking too soft, i cant hear anything much you say. Had to always zoom in to hear hahaha

This is an interesting topic. I agree that some topics sell in Malaysia, such as the 3Rs. 1MDb was a massive corruption scandal that has brought down BN’s downfall. Awesome podcast 🎉
Comes across as a remarkable individual who exudes incredible creative energy & heart-warming humanity. And one who is not averse to taking risks. Respect indeed.
Why can't the host speak properly into the mic ???

He believes in God. That’s the key to his success. Leaders in politics and businesses who believe in God are better able to manage their organizations. It is good to remind ourselves how insignificant and small we really are on a daily basis. A leader with such thoughts go about doing their jobs cheerfully with a strong and clear mind. 1. Planet earth is just a grain of sand in the Sahara Desert. 2. Time has no beginning nor end. 3. Distances in the unimaginable awesome Universe could be in the range of trillions of light years. 4.
