@ yea they have their own body language it can be difficult to understand unless you know what to look for, NEVER look a scared or new dog directly in the eye it can be seen as a challenge of authority. But yea dogs don’t attack “out of nowhere” I have a read a bunch of books on dog body language, granted every dog is as unique as a human is to another but there are different warning signs that universal, a low growl, ears pinned back or down( which means they are scared) tight lips are also a sign of stress, often mistaken for smile, dogs do smile but if it’s mouth is closed, and ears down. It’s nervous, and different types of tail wags mean different things, so just because a dog is wagging its tail doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be on guard especially if you don’t know the dog. A low wag, means “I’m nervous, take it slow. There’s one that’s incredibly rare that I’ve only seen once with one of mine and once on internet video it’s when they spin their tail in a circle, THAT is straight up happiness and it’s adorable. Every dog is different but yea you just have to be careful and not just assume a dogs happy to see you because it’s wagging its tail, even if it’s at a level that’s level with its body and SLOWLY wagging, it’s curious but still unsure so take it slow, if it’s standing unusually high for the average dog, take your time and let it come to you and don’t engage, it’s kinda like when they have their ears up, they are on alert for danger. I’m currently staying at a Airbnb with a very skittish dog, tail between legs but definitely curious, I can’t move at my normal speed, I have to walk slowly, otherwise she barks but she’s not aggressive more like she’d run away rather than attack, she’s sweet though. Just a puppy, curious but nervous. Anyway sorry bout the long message but it’s always good to be informed, it helps to avoid euthanasia as well as attacks that could’ve been avoided, I have a book that lists all the different meanings of different tail wags but it’s packed away. Wish I had it so i could let you know more clearly. Anyway, yes just be careful when approaching a new dog and even if the owner says it’s friendly, watch its body language. My dog jumps- but that’s because she wants to give you kisses, thing is, she’s a lab mix so she can be intimidating. And YES, SOME labs can be aggressive. Don’t believe the lie that all labs are friendly, just like the lie that all pitbull type breeds are automatically aggressive, it’s simply not true. I had a mini poodle/chi mix, we walked into a dog park and almost immediately a lab picked her up and shook her like a toy, she required immediate surgery. She had a tube in her neck draining fluid or something for like 2 weeks. Poor thing.
