It doesn't occur in the poem, but she is listing literary techniques as metaphors for their lovemaking, so the feminine body being the "softer rhyme to his" can be interpreted as an allusion to feminine rhyme, (which is a literary device where the unstressed syllable rhymes, called feminine precisely because it is perceived as softer than rhyming the stressed syllables) which then fits into the list of literary devices along with echo, assonance, nouns and verbs. I hope that makes sense!

Sorry - I don't have a shorter version. If you're studying it, making your own summary would be great revision though.

Is your Scottish text the Crichton-Smith short stories? If so, treat the "E" in CEO as the extract in front of you (because you won't get the whole story) and then treat the "O" as the rest of the story - ie not the bit that's in front of you. Hope that helps?

Anon just means 'soon'. The closest we have to a clue as to what the familiar was, is when she calls it 'Harpier' and says it 'cries' later in the play. Harpies are half human/half bird, so I tend to think it was probably an owl, but Shakespeare doesn't say, so your teacher's analysis might be just as valid as mine! The most common familiars were cats, toads and owls - (a convention JK Rowling follows.) Monkeys tended to be expensive pets for the rich - in "The Merchant of Venice", Jessica trades a ring she stole from her father for a monkey. I tend not to think of the witches as rich, especially when they beg for food, so a monkey would be surprising, but not impossible.

Dear Rachel, thank you so much for your food for thoughts. I didn't consider that indeed monkeys were expensive pets those days and, of course, when I think about all these conditions I would doubt it now that 'Anon' was a monkey.
