Smash Mouth's Greg Camp On Allstar, Film/TV Music, Songwriting, and Supergroups
มุมมอง 4114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Raised in San Jose, Greg Camp was deeply rooted in the California rock scene long before he became a household name. As a musician in various bands throughout the 1980s, Greg sharpened his musical chops until a fateful encounter with Steve Harwell and Kevin Coleman led to the formation of Smash Mouth. Initially hesitant, Greg was convinced to take a look at their songs-and the rest, as they say...

    Love Rik Emmett. One of my all time Favs! However, he makes it sound like he's never needed to practice a day in his life. Definitely NOT TRUE! I'm sure Rik practices his vocals or warm ups just as much as the next guy. Maybe not as much anymore but I'm sure he does. Like the old saying "use it or lose it". Whether Rik wants to share his methods with others is another story....

    1:26 Same! The drum fills on the 3rd chorus are epic! Fun fact -- Simon is one of my major inspirations. "Gonna Get Ya" on Townshend's Empty Glass album put me over the top and convinced me to play the drums.

    Nice to see Seraphine get props... I've seen a lot of people dismiss him as a so so player. The first Chicago album should have prevented that from ever happening.

    To be the first choice to take Jeff's seat after his tragic death is one thing. Going there without being intimidated by the prospect of being measured against Sir Porcaro and just absolutely kill that gig with good character and incredible talent for music is totally another. I wonder who the second and third choices for a Toto drummer were in the process? Who could have done that better than this guy? I consider Simon a brother and I've been a fan since the Mike Oldfield 5 Miles out summer tour show in Nice, south of France early 80's. Totally blew me away. Much respect.

    3:12 I don‘t get the "much more high-quality, of course" comment about the Sony PCM-3348, looking down on ADAT. It’s lossless digital audio, after all, and the machines even use similar sample rates and bit depths. Seems a bit like audio tech snobbery to me. 🤷‍♂️

    • @musicology2148
      @musicology2148 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think it's snobbery. The Sony was the next evolution in recording and all these veteran studio guys want to be recording things on the latest greatest tech. Similar tech yes but think about it this way - say you bring the greatest take ever to a session but it's on cassette tape, no engineer will use that. Serious musicians always want to be recorded in the best possible fidelity.

    • @kth42
      @kth42 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @musicology2148 The fidelity is (arguably) the same, just the tape media are different. When someone looks down at ADAT because it uses VHS cassettes, that‘s kind of an arrogant attitude, in my eyes.

    • @scrat8177
      @scrat8177 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree. 44.1/16 was the standard for years and sounds just fine! the higher sampling rate really does very little in the long run if you consider the Nyquist principle. I think that was just the marketing and general thought process in the 90s: "Wow, shiny new tech! Must be better."

    The first time I heard Simon Phillips it was on the 801 Live album in the mid 1970s. 801 was a deliberately short lived project featuring Phillips (Drums, Rhythm Generator), Phil Manzanera (guitar), Francis Monkman (Fender Rhodes electric Piano), Bill McCormick (Bass), Lloyd Watson (slide guitar), and Brian Eno (Eno). All those guys were established heavy hitters -except for Simon Phillips who was only 19 at the time. What struck me at the time, and still to this day, is the fierceness and drive of Phillips playing. If you haven’t hear it you have never heard “801 Live” you really have been missing something you need to hear.

I mentioned to a friend of mine how good the guitar player was, he said he didnt know there was a guitar player!! Then he started noticing! she sounded like ready beats. towards the end of the show the band gave her a bit of front space, but still she held it so elegantly. great guitarist!! I ended up here because of the show. thank you for this!
