A glimpse of the past:
Ermioni is named after the legendary hero Hermion, son of Europs, who founded the ancient city of Hermione. This city was a major naval and commercial hub in ancient Greece and participated in significant historical events, such as the battles of Salamis and Plataea. By the 3rd century BC, Hermione became the most powerful city in the region, joining the Achaean League. During Roman rule, the city prospered again after suffering from pirate attacks, mainly due to its production and trade of the famous "porphyra" (royal purple), a natural dye extracted from sea snails, used for royal garments, including those of Alexander the Great. After being abandoned, it reappeared in the 14th century under the name Kastri and switched between Venetian and Turkish control. In the 18th century, Ermioni became a commercial center and played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence.

Ermioni's natural beauty is ideal for hiking. A popular route is the Katafyki Gorge, a half-hour walk linking Ermioni with Fournoi. On Epiphany, the "giala-giala" tradition is celebrated. Young people decorate boats the day before and, on the day of the Epiphany, dress in traditional naval costumes, visiting homes, receiving treats, and singing the "Giala-Giala" song before diving into the water to retrieve the holy cross. Another local tradition is the burning of Judas, which takes place on Easter Sunday in the harbor. An effigy of Judas is made and set on fire, with boats circling around, accompanied by music, fireworks, and traditional dancing.
On July 1st and November 1st, a large religious festival honors Saints Anargyroi, with locals and tourists participating. Additionally, the municipality organizes the Fishermen’s Festival on Shrove Monday, where Lenten foods such as lagana (bread), trachanas (a type of pasta), and seafood are offered, along with live music.
