DIY Sitting Room Makeover | Part 2: Face Frames, Cabinet Doors & Special Details for a Cohesive Look
In Part 2 of my sitting room makeover series, I’m taking our cabinetry project to the next level! This week, I’m adding face frames to the cabinet boxes, building custom cabinet doors with a decorative molding detail, and creating a unique toe kick with a diamond pattern air return cover. I’m also sharing how I made the cabinetry look more like built-in furniture with decorative feet.
Along the way, I’ll cover helpful tips for DIYers who may be hesitant to use power tools, showcasing my handmade jig for routing and using the Kreg Accu-Cut Track to make straighter cuts. Plus, I’ll share lessons learned from past cabinetry projects, like using better quality wood, aligning face frames for inset doors, and getting cleaner mortise and tenon joints.
I’d love your input! I’ve decided to paint the cabinets, but I’m still exploring colors-should I go with Sherwin Williams Urban Jungle, Sherwin Williams Quiver Tan, or Benjamin Moore Fairview Taupe? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Finally, I'm thinking about doing Vlogmas this year with two shorter vlogs per week. Would you enjoy that? Let me know, and don’t forget to subscribe to see the next episode where I’ll be finishing the cabinetry by building the countertop, mounting the cabinet doors, and painting it all!

Introducing The Claytor House: My Interior Design Journey | Meet Cory | Claytor House Interiors
Next time you paint with deep color, ask the paint store to tint your primer. Then you won't need three coats of paint. 😉
I love that you truly give step by step instructions
I vote fairview taupe. They all seem good with the fireplace color, but I like that one best with the floors. I’m new to your channel, but I watch way too many DIY and woodworking videos, and just wanted to say your content is as good or better than channels that are 200x bigger. I’d watch vlogmas!
That is so sweet of you to say! Thank you so so much for that♥️ I’m very glad you’re here☺️ I think Fairview Taupe is my favorite of the 3 as well
Adding the detail to the cabinet doors was such a good choice! I am in the process of updating some of my “builder grade” cabinets and I did the exact same thing.
How fun! It’s such an easy addition and looks so good☺️ I wish my kitchen cabinets were more of a shaker style so I could add it to them too
You have done an absolutely phenomenal job. They're going to look amazing 😊
Thank you so much!♥️ I can’t wait to finish them and see the final result- plus use the MUCH needed storage space😁
@theclaytorhouse I can't wait to see them finished too, you have great taste. Love watching your videos 🙂
That is so sweet! Thank you♥️ I’m glad you enjoy them and I greatly appreciate your support☺️
Poplar notoriously doesn't stain well because of the green tones and strong color variations it has, but takes paint beautifully because it has a tight grain. It's almost always used for painted finishes.
That’s great to know! Thanks so much♥️ I did a test piece with a dark walnut stain and it looked awful. Makes sense now!!
Very pretty!
Thank you so much!♥️
Great progress!
Thank you!♥️ I’m loving all the little details and can’t wait to see it finished☺️
This looks amazing, looking forward to seeing the final result.
Thank you so much!♥️ Me too, I’m ready to wrap it up and see how it all turns out☺️
I am amazed at how far your carpentry skills have come since the project that you first used them! It gives me hope, lol. I have some power tools but I am afraid to use them:) Great work!
Thank you so much!♥️ I definitely feel more confident with it all & am trying to apply and share everything I learned that first time around. Power tools can be so scary!! There are some that I flat out refuse to use anymore and it's making the process a lot less anxiety inducing☺️ I hope I continue to find ways around them!
Love! I’m excited to see the next steps with the doors! Did you consider the outlet locations when you were placing the shelves?
Thank you! I can't wait to see the difference the doors and face frames make☺️ Honestly, I was so focused on the air vents, I didn't even consider it🤦🏻♂️ The way the shelves run right in front of them does drive me crazy, but fortunately I made them adjustable in the event that I ever do need to access them!
It’s going to be beautiful and extra special because you made it! It was so smart to make the shelves adjustable! I’m inspired to do this too, but I don’t even know how to start. 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you so much! 😊 That’s so kind of you! Honestly, starting can feel like a lot, but I was surprised at how (relatively) easy it is once you dive in. I watch tons of woodworking TH-cam channels for inspiration-they’re super helpful! The trickiest part is honestly the math, so I make plenty of sketches before and during the whole process. I promise it’s worth it-and I’m always here if you need any tips along the way!
Looking forward to seeing these come together!
Thanks, Mallory! Me too, I can't wait☺️
Great job and woodwork skills! I can already see what a huge difference this will make in terms of storage solutions for you!
Thank you so much!♥️ I definitely cannot wait until the doors are done and I can finally hide everything away☺️
How awesome. Well planned and explained. It looks amazing.
@@tiadrumgold4702 Thank you!♥️ It was such a fun project, I’m so glad you liked it!☺️
Loved how you took the inspiration style and made it affordable. I've subscribed so I can see what comes next! Great job. Thanks for sharing.
@@MediaBaldwin Thank you so much!♥️ I’m glad you liked it and am so excited that you’re here☺️
This was so helpful!
@@jwest2133 That is so good to hear!☺️ Thank you so much for watching♥️
we have a Bavarian Inn here in Michigan too! funny coincidence. Happy anniversary to you and your husband 🫶🏻
How fun!! I saw online a few places with the same name, I love that you have one near you! Thank you so much, it was lovely💕
Thank you so much, that's not only a video about decor, it's also valuable life lessons. Loved the tips.
I'm so glad to hear that! I hope it was helpful☺️
This was the video I was looking for.
That's so good to hear! I hope it was helpful☺️
I’d like to suggest that you try out Dixie Belle Silk Paint in your next project. The Silk paint line is 3 products in one, Primer, Paint, and Top Coat. Would save you lots of steps! Your workmanship and attention to detail was remarkable. The bookshelves are stunning! 💜
Thank you so much for the suggestion! That sounds like a huge time-saver, I'll definitely have to try it out☺️
Wow! This turned out beautiful!!! Great job Cory!
Thank you, Rhonda! I'm so glad you like it!!♥️
You did a great job!!
Thank you so much!♥️ I'm very grateful for all the new skills I picked up along the way☺️
The space turned out great!
Thank you, Mallory!♥️ I'm so glad you like it☺️
This is a beautiful room! You are very talented, and I'm looking forward to more videos. I hope that you do another blind, and film it as well. Just lovely.
Thank you so much!♥️ I will definitely be repeating that project (my blinds need to be replaced so bad🫣). It was so fun and I'd love to share it when I make them again!
I absolutely love my space! The before clips gave me anxiety! Snuggling up with a blanket with my feet on the ottoman is how I relax each night. Love it and love you. Thank you for making my library dream come true!!
I love you too♥️ You more than deserved this space, and I'm so glad I got to make it happen. Thank you for the opportunity to bring it to life and learn so many new skills!
Wonderful job Cory. You have managed to make a budget room look high end.
Thank you!♥️ It was such a fun challenge to make every dollar count and find creative ways to elevate the space. I'm really proud of how it all came together, and I’m so grateful for the new skills I picked up along the way!
The finished room looks beautiful. You did a fabulous job.❤
Thank you so much!♥️ It was a very fun project! I'm glad you liked it☺️
The stoneware flagons are beautiful - the dark one especially!
Agreed! I see a variety everywhere I go, but I'm always drawn to the darker ones☺️
I have two favorite pieces, well three, no four. lol I love the Apple and bird and the light colored jug and the little $5 vase. However, I am sure they will all look amazing styled.
I can't wait to style them♥️ So glad you like them!
Another fun video. Love the things you bought. I would put them in my house any time. Have a great weekend. Greetings from France.
Thank you!☺️ I'm so glad you liked it. Enjoy your weekend!♥️
Travertine is gorgeous & timeless. Stone is never dated.
I totally agree! Anything from the natural world will always be beautiful in my book♥️ Some of the associations with travertine are really unfortunate, and I think it was just used in a trendy way that people still associate it with. I'm hoping the same doesn't happen with the current trend of marble backsplashes and door casings that we are seeing! All stone is stunning in its own way and I'm so glad we have so many options to choose from☺️
I think it turned out wonderfully! I have watched several of your videos and have reaaly enjoyed them. When your completed DIYs are revealed, you show and discuss the process WITH the changes made due to forgetting a step or what not. I really appreciate this!
Thank you so much!♥️ I think it's important to be transparent and show the things that didn’t work out just as much as the things that did. We all make mistakes, and I want to show that it's okay to learn as you go☺️ My hope is to empower others to try new things, even if they don’t go perfectly the first time! I'm so glad this approach resonates with you, and I really appreciate your support!
This turned out so beautiful, you’re so talented. Much Love 🩷🫶🏼
Thank you, Lauren!☺️ It's so good to hear from you, I hope all is well!♥️
Just a suggestion, the music drowned out your voice. You have a quiet voice! I'd rather hear you.
Thank you for letting me know!♥️ Someone else was telling me the same thing on another video, and I discovered that it depends on the device you watch it on. I've started watching my videos with my computer speakers, through my headphones, and then casting it on my T.V. to try to catch anything weird before uploading. I hope that fixes it for future videos, but please let me know if it continues!☺️
Thanks, you did an awesome job and explained everything very well! 😊 I subscribed!
Thank you! ♥️ I'm so glad you're here☺️ I hope it is helpful if you go to replicate it!
This turned out great!!
Thank you!♥️ I was a little nervous going into it, but I'm so happy with how it turned out. I'm so glad you liked it!☺️
I loved this video. I didn't realise how simple a round ottoman is to make. I've always made upholstered crates as they didn't need much assembling. I know you are going to show us the ottoman styled in a later video. I would have loved to see it in this video, what you would possibly place on the ottoman. BTW I love your channel, tuning in from South Africa 🇿🇦❤✨
Hello!♥️ It was definitely easier to make than I anticipated it being. You are so right, I should have styled it more in this video! Because it's an ottoman and not a coffee table, I personally would keep the styling light. In my house, I would just add a few books and a crock/vase like the one in the video, plus a mid height item like a candle or group of candlesticks or a smaller vessel that compliments the color and shape of the larger one. Thank you so much for watching! I'll try to incorporate some styling advice for the ottoman in this week's vlog☺️
@@theclaytorhouse Ahhhh. I love that you responded with your recommendations. Thank you
@zamo9266 Of course!♥ I dedicated a section of last week's vlog to it where I dove into it a little more in depth. If you're interested, it is the 4th chapter on the video labeled "Styling Tips for Ottomans" ( th-cam.com/video/PutLwgRL1g4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=USomr0gRSZkw1Ku_ )☺ I hope it is helpful!
You are a good carpenter
Thank you so much!♥️
You are amazing! By the way, I have lots of different thread colors and all kinds of batting when you are ready to make an ottoman for your space.
Sounds good! After making this one, I definitely think my sitting room needs one☺️
Hello from Germany🙋♀. Thank you so much for this very interesting video, It was so helpful for me, because i have always problems with color combination in my home.😍
Hello! I'm so glad you're here♥️ I'm glad you found it helpful!
What a huge difference! Love it!

Thankyou so much for showing how you achieved this step by step. I even appreciate you leaving in the mistake about the oil based sealer. I had no idea it would do that! I’ve just bought two Billy bookcases for my space and I’m looking to make it looked built in.😊
