      In the new versions of Blender, the principled BSDF was revamped and those options were moved under the subsurface and specular subcategories. I guess they decided it would make more sense to have them under the heading of the property it would most affect, rather then out on the top level where it's less clear what it is actually doing.

    hi, amazing tutorial and explanation! thank you so much for sharing! for some reason when I got to the part where you added Map range and value & math nodes, it didn't give the same effect which you got with purple and yellow bands showing through. The only way I was able to get a similar effect was either by plugging the Fresnel Factor node into Mix RGB or by removing the Mix RGB node, which then results in the colour range that you display in the video. but I can't understand why a Mix colour node would disrupt it, or why you would add it in the first place.

    • @ltfilm
      @ltfilm 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching it! I'm afraid I don't quite understand the setup you're describing. I don't believe I connected the Map range and value/math nodes to the mix RGB. They should connect to the IOR input of the refraction BSDF. The mix RGB is there to correct the darkening that happens when connecting the color ramp to the color input of the refraction BSDF. I can't remember if I had a reason why 1.55 was the value for the mix RGB or if I just figured it out by trial and error. If you have any more questions or just want me to elaborate on anything further, let me know!

    So does it matter for me When i watch video and image or play game on smart phone with 10 bit display is enough or 12 bit better?

    • @ltfilm
      @ltfilm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would really depend on the content you’re viewing. An 8-bit video signal doesn’t benefit from being displayed on a 10 bit or higher monitor, but a 10-bit signal on an 8-bit monitor will lose some of the nuances that differentiate the 10-bit signal. However, true 10-bit consumer displays are somewhat rare and expensive. 8+2 bit monitors are more common, but are only imitating true 10-bit. (That’s a whole rabbit hole in itself.) And as far as I know, there aren’t any 12-bit consumer displays available. If any exist, they would fall firmly under the “professional” category and cost many thousand dollars. Tldr: Figure out what bit depth the media you’re consuming is at and get a display that matches that. 8-bit displays are probably good enough. 10-bit will provide a noticeably better experience, but are also noticeably more expensive. 12-bit for all intents and purposes doesn’t exist for you and me.

    You are only "visually" blurring, but what you do is actually moving pixels around instead of interpolating between colors (which is what proper blurring actually do). It's fine for some cases but for mine it was not unfortunately.

    • @ltfilm
      @ltfilm 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're absolutely right! In the absence of a proper blurring function, this is the closest we can get. However, since the white noise node scales infinitely and is treated as a continuous function, any changes it made to the image texture will always be at a subpixel level, so should never be visible. So, I'm curious what sort of workload you're doing where this method wouldn't work for you?

    • @globglob3d
      @globglob3d 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ltfilm try using a color ramp after your setup to tweak the values and you'd be left with no change whatsoever (if the image input has pixels of either 1 or 0 values). But there is a fix. What you do is basically repeat the setup multiple times with different noise seed (just change the scale slightly since there is no seed input) and average them (mix them together). Then you actually get a gradient. More computationally intensive but you get a proper blur :)

    • @globglob3d
      @globglob3d 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ltfilm to answer your question: I'm making a procedural tile generator using the brick node as the main mask, which output a black and white texture. I wanted a gradient slope between tiles hence the need for blurring.

    • @ltfilm
      @ltfilm 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting suggestion! I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about having no effect with a color ramp or how repeating the setup creates a different result. But, when I used this method on a brick texture as a mask for an image texture, it worked perfectly fine as a gradient between the tiles. But, if it doesn't work for you, then your setup is probably very particular about how the blurring is implemented!

      @@ltfilm my issue was mostly due to the fact I'm using the black and white mask to generate a normal map. Since the colors on a normal map represents directional vectors the gradient has to be an actual gradient otherwise the normal map doesn't work as it should.

    PROPERITY EDITOR SHOWS BLANK WHEN ON THE LAMP ICON. YES i'M IN CYCLES. Can you assist?

      The whole property editor is blank in every tab? I'm sorry, that sounds like a bug, not something that I can fix from here. Try bringing it up in the forums so you can add a screenshot to show your problem. Or you could just try going for a fresh install of Blender and see if that fixes it.

    As a visual learner, this helped me to finally understand how this mechanic works, as opposed to just reading the blender docs, thanks!

      The docs can be a pretty dense read, so glad this helped!

      Yes, the document is funny. It's a bit redundant and verbose. eg: "'Diffuse: the ray is generated by a diffuse reflection or transmission (translucency).' I remember a dictionary that was similar. "What is 'redundant'? 'That which results in redundancy."

    Crazy how Geometry Nodes now has a Blur Attribute node, but the Shader Editor still doesn't! It would save me a lot of time eyeballing things in photoshop and sending it back to Blender. But this is a great alternative. Thanks!

      Yeah, I’m amazed there isn’t a blur node either. But glad this workaround helps you!
