      @@tobi_f I totally get that. I think simpler books work really well in audio like YA and romances. Books that require more attention I usually listen to the audio and read physically at the same time. I love doing that. And for really complex stuff I just read regularly super slowly. I don’t usually just put a classic on audio while I drive for example, I’ll play something light and easy to follow at those times. So maybe that method could make it work for you? But I also get if it’s just 100% a pass. Some people are just better visual readers!

    Ok so don’t let this deter you from reading The Way of Kings, but the series technically isn’t over. The first arc is done, but there will be another five book arc starting in like 2031. Definitely still highly recommend it, but you won’t exactly get the closure of finishing a series 😅

I feel like his books are such a fantasy reader right of passage. my audiobook hold for the way of kings came in last week and its 45 hours! so I pushed the hold to be delivered in February because im not quite ready yet... but it will happen this year

    I appreciate your point on how annotating helps to keep up the reading momentum of moving through a big classic book. I plan to read Persuasion at the beginning of 2025.

    • @bookishbianca

      good luck! annotations really help keep me on track. if you've never read Jane Austen before I would say give it at least 100 pages and then make judgements. for me the first 100 were a little slow, and hard to get used to, but then I found myself super in love with the story after that point. also the new adaptation on Netflix with Dakota Johnson is wonderful, and I also listened along to the audiobook sometimes while reading it. that helped a loooooot. I listened to the one on Spotify narrated by Cynthia Erivo (which I didn't even know it was her till I just looked it up rn!!! I love her and she was fantastic in it) it's available on there for free! happy reading and please let me know what you think of it!

    The debate regarding "are audiobooks reading" stems more from the semantics of the wording. You do not read an audiobook, you listen to an audiobook. Reading and listening are two different skills. That doesn't mean to say that listening to an audiobook doesn't count towards your reading goals. Of course it does. You've still consumed the book, it's just a different medium.

    • @bookishbianca
      @bookishbianca 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hmmm I see where you're coming from regarding semantics and I agree there are people who hold the semantic inaccuracy as their primary issue, but I've also met people irl who, once I say I listened to an audiobook instead of actually physically reading with my eyeballs, discount my reading of a book and no longer find my opinions worth engaging with since I didn't 'read' it. the people I've come across who feel strongly about this are often coming from, in my opinion, a false sense of intellectual superiority. but I do acknowledge that not everyone comes from that camp and some people really just want to use firm verbs lol. have you come across both sides? or mainly just people who care for the semantics?

I find it helpful when I love a book to avoid reviews, especially negative ones, because I don't want it influencing my opinion of the book if I had a mind-blowingly good experience with it. I obviously understand everyone has a right to their own opinion, but I don't want anyone else's opinion influencing mine in those cases.

    • @bookishbianca
      @bookishbianca หลายเดือนก่อน

      that review was so out of pocket! LOL people are ruthless on Goodreads but also hilarious. I also just avoid negative reviews. when I love a book I prefer to just read other 5 star reviews and live in an echo chamber of love for the book so I can live my best delulu life. I don't even use the star rating system anymore, I either loved it, liked it, or just didn't finish it. I rarely push myself to finish books I don't enjoy. so basically this is the first time ive ever looked at one star reviews of things I loved but it was really fun!

    Is that Blood Meridian on your shelf? Blood Meridian is really good (I hated The Road). McCarthy's writing is so hard to understand, but that story was incredible. I had to read that book 3 times to fully understand the story, haha. I don't like his writing style though. It's stupidly cryptic, but he sure does know how to write a story even still. Suttree is really funny if you ever get the chance to read that one.

    • @bookishbianca
      @bookishbianca 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes and no haha. Yes, that is Blood Meridian on the shelf! But not on my shelf, the shelf behind me belongs to my partner, just used it as a fun background so it's his book. I haven't read any Cormac McCarthy, I've heard his stuff can get pretty dark, and I've also heard similar complaints about him flexing his literary prowess in unnecessarily complicated ways. Interesting that you didn't like The Road, that's usually peoples favorite. Is the movie any good? I've been considering watching it first to see if I even want to try his books.

    • @Booklover32
      @Booklover32 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bookishbianca Yeah, they get really dark, and I mean REALLY dark, even Blood Meridian (that one, in my opinion, is very worth it...I've read it now 3 times because the story...very interesting but it will make you uncomfortable in many different ways), but The Road is just needlessly depressing. To give you an idea of just how dark, it talks about kidnapping and harvesting pregnant mothers to cook their unborn babies over a campfire for eating. Just really gross (I was not expecting that, lol), and I found the ending extremely rushed and poor. It does have a couple of good moments, but overall, it's really boring. Nothing really happens the whole book, except grossness and maybe two action scenes. The one thing that could be said about The Road though is it's way easier to understand than Blood Meridian. I think Suttree at least for me would've been the best opener book (it's very funny but worlds apart from his other books). I'll never understand though why McCarthy is praised as the greatest modern American writer though. Ever...he's so depressing and writes without any clarity, but he does "usually" write a hypnotic story. I'll give him that. I couldn't really understand Blood Meridian the first time, but I found myself back at it a second time to understand it better because something about that story was so weird and interesting. It's about a group of Apache scalp hunters hired by the US (or Mexican?) government who eventually go rogue and turn to scalping Mexicans. There are no good guys in that book, but there are some villains worse than others. The Road is not a great thing to read right before a potential nuclear war because it's so negative, and it'll give you fears you didn't have before, lol. I've never watched any of his movies. Suttree doesn't really get all that depressing.

    • @bookishbianca

      sorry for the late response, TH-cam never notified me for some reason. but that is super dark... it kind of reminds me of the walking dead based on what you're saying. there are similar dark themes and actions that take place in TWD, but the characters are so realistic and lovable (not necessarily always good guys, but you still love them) so we as the viewers understand why they have to commit cruel acts, for survival. I also started watching TWD very young so its never really scared me. but for most other horror or dark media, I tend to stay away because im generally a wuss. cannibals and scalp hunters might be too much for me. but I never say never... ill tell my partner what you said about the books though because he likes dark lit so thanks for explaining and giving advice on the reading order! <3

    I recommend The Count of monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Its one of the best Classical adventure books I have ever read.

      This is definitely on my TBR, I'm terrified of big classics, but I NEED to read the count of monte Cristo before I die. I just started Middlemarch by George Eliot today and that's also a huge book so maybe Dumas will be the next big book I attempt... that is if I can make my way through Middlemarch in one piece >.<
