I have one. It makes me happy too. The only difference beetween man and boys is the price of there toys.
How long is this grip broke down? I want to try but still consider about the stability of it (in my country i have to shipping from US or Europe which is quite expensive and took a long time to reach)
I still have this pair on my bike. Been on there since 2019. It’s totally fine 🤣 I ride it every day (nearly all street). 23,000 miles on it. Are they making them again? I never found anymore after this pair.

You mentioned at the beginning of the video that you're switching out the "fuel pump and the sheriff's shrouds". It looked like you put the same XC shrouds back on. Do you need to swap for the SX shrouds or do the OEM XC ones work. Also thanks for this.
As long as the shrouds/tank are from the same generation bike, they are the same. You're welcome. And enjoy the normal gas cap. I like the quick release, but get tired of lubing the seal so it'll twist off without blowing a sphincter vein 🤣
interesting why nobody except honda try to deal with semiautomatic clutch using simple controller and servo engine to control the clutch while you still have normal clutch control
Less electronics to manage break 🤷♂️
Great Pic of Tony D, Hanna and Kent!
Brings back memories of the old days when I was a kid riding a honda z50 and ct70.. I think this is great for anyone that has an injury or just doesn't have the ability to learn to use a clutch
What year is your 690 John? I’ve read many places where this procedure only works on pre-2014 models. In the TuneECU Android app, there are ECU tests and programming functions applicable to pre-2014 models. ECU and TPS resets are very limited on >2014 690 models. I bring this up only because procedures like what you describe coincide with what 690 owners describe on the TuneECU forums. Any comment?
2018. Never even heard of TuneECU until now. It’s likely an environment adaptation more than a “reset.” People think it’ll “reprogram” after doing mods or putting a pipe on, or cam in or something. Not going to happen. Honestly don’t even remember what I said in this video, but I know I used to do it when I spent time up on the mountain and it seemed to help. The corresponding video with the throttle reset is a must know. I’ve used that a bunch of times!!! Practically critical if you ever have to bump start on a stone dead battery. Only works on the ride by wire bikes which is probably 14+.
@ Thanks for the reply. Mine’s 2017 with Rottweiler intake, canister delete, PC5 with O2 sensor removed/plugged and Wings open exhaust. Rottweiler provided excellent PC5 maps. TuneECU is a semi-handy app that works in conjunction with a quality OBD2 dongle and port adapter but seems to have more usability on pre-2014 690s. My 2017 developed issues with jerky power delivery and missing while idle. Turns out the problem was the fuel pump going bad and kind of disguised itself as an electrical issue. I’ll keep your procedures in mind. Thanks again.
Drill holes the size of available blind grommets, if you overdue it you can bung some holes up easily.

Hello, I have a question, I have a 701 enduro from 2021 and it has an arrow silencer and non-catalyzed connection on it. I have never done any reprogramming but plan to buy an arrow line with powerbomb and install a DNA air box. Do you think reprogramming is necessary or resetting the ecu will be enough? THANKS.
You’ll need a tuner like Power Commander or at least a Kev Mod system from Oz on ebay. Might read up on his new stuff or contact Kev and ask if it’s enough.
Yeah 👍 baby !
Gitsum 😂
Does it work on the 24 390 adventure?? 🤔
Tried it. Didn’t work
Sorry, never saw the OG comment. Only works on the electronic throttle systems.
Hi, I have an important question, for you between the fmf gnarly and the original exhaust in relation to their shape is there a difference in behavior and if so what?
Stock pipe tailors power to the top. The pipes with the S bend in the front put it down lower. Look at the 200EXC models on images for examples.
@ yes, thank you for your answer, I have a 200 exc supermotard and I find it lacks high revs. I have a gnarly and I was looking at installing a DEP that is not angled to catch the high revs but I wondered if the difference was obvious without the elbow and with the elbow.
The DEP should give you the top end. Make sure it’s actually a 200 pipe and not just a 125 pipe that fits. The 200SX pipe has a much fatter expansion chamber.
@@JohnHowerton137 I have just found someone who has mounted a DEP on a 200 from 2015, I'm really looking for a 125 type behavior so I will also take a 125 muffler (diameter a little smaller) for the high rpm and vforce 3 I think all this should raise the high rpm. We love our 200 ;)
@@mat_tnakl5453 V-Force 3 is stock. 125 pipe will give you much more than the Gnarly, but the 200 pipe should give more power yet I’d imagine. Smaller the expansion, more linear the power. Just look at a trials bike vs a high RPM GoCart or Chainsaw 🤷🏼♂️
I know this video is a few years old. But im looking at a 2018 ktm 690 enduro r for with 10,000 miles for $7,000. Anything to look out for or is it too many miles for reliability?
At 10k I’d say just look for general “has it been thrashed” vibes. Also if it sat most of the time without regular starting you’ll probably be looking at some fuel system work to get it running properly (if it isn’t).
Just picked one up I have a fmf fatty gold series pipe. This thing scares me haha. Definitely 80+ mph

Hello, I have a 701 enduro 2021. What are the benefits of such a maneuver ? My motorcycle makes a strange electrical noise when stopping and this noise is amplified if I carry out your manipulation. Edit : im asking for the throttle reset, not the ecu.
The throttle reset just resets the activation point of the throttle. Sometimes it gets a little off and will run a little rough. Just takes 30 seconds and can help a bunch. Bump start after the battery has totally died and it will instantly make sense. Might barely make it home if you don't do it.
Very good video.
Glad it helped 🤙
Can install it on diffrent of bikes like bobber, adventure, etc. ?
As long as they make one for your engine.
Just turned 40 and I think it’s time I get plated 😂
Almost have to these days. You won’t regret it 🤣
@@JohnHowerton137 how much does it weigh?
Realistically in ridable form, prob right at about 260? They’ve got about 30lbs on a MX bike. Power is much softer. They like to be ridden like Jett Lawrence or Kenny is on it. Just click up a gear and let the nice soft power and soft suspension float you over the bumps. This video was my buddies bike. I was riding 250Fs back then My 450EXC is in some of my newer videos. And if you want it to handle more like an MX bike, put a 110 tire on the rear so it can steer with the rear. When the tire gets fatter it pushes the front. Like when we were forced to switch to 4T from 2T MX bikes… Very heavy front end feel in comparison, then add the engine breaking to that 🥴 Why I stuck to 250F for longer. I F-ing HATED my 450 until I figured that trick out.
th-cam.com/video/rmmY6cmc4Zo/w-d-xo.html 11mo ago!!! 😳 Holy Crap!! I need to ride more!
Mine won't even start. Turn the key on you hear the fuel pump noise, then it keeps making noise. The noise doesn't stop until you turn the key off. If you open the throttle 100% during this constant noise, it almost goes away. Still won't start
It doesn't sound like the fuel pump, there is something going on in the throttle body. I've tried to do research and can't come up with anything. It's a 2023 Gasgas es700
I have disconnected the battery for hours, checked all fuses. Checked grounds on the harness. Checked all plug connections. Battery is 12.7V. I'm at a loss. The bike has less than 50 hours
Also, it's not kickstand related, I've read people having problems with that. It's something going on with the fuel /throttle body system
Have you tried the tiny little inline filter? 50 hours is plenty time to plug one of those and not let it run.
And if you’ve been playing with the throttle while trying to start it, do the throttle reset. Only takes 30sec and may keep you from beating your head on the wall. It’s a must almost always if you ever have to bump start it. I have a video for that too.
I bought my 2018 690 Enduro R used, around two years ago, with 2,000 miles. Your videos have definitely influenced me. Great info. And your comments here are spot on. This bike is an awesome true adventure bike that will allow the rider to go on a multi day adventure and ride in a wider variety of territory than the large adventure bikes. I love to explore the dirt roads and trails, but sometimes have to also do a few hundred miles on busy, high-speed highways. Something I would not want to do with my 501. Again, thanks for yours videos. Much appreciated.
They both have their places and I love them both. As long as it’s not too slippery, I’m comfortable taking the 690 most anywhere.

How can I reset the computer?
All it takes to try it is your time. It might work. On the E throttle bikes (14+?) if you give them gas while you start them it screws up the throttle position sensor and makes them run like crap. Don’t believe that applies to the cable throttles though.
Hey again John! I know it's been 4 years since you posted this but what are the risers you have upgraded to here? I think that'll be my next upgrade. Thanks!
It’s Trail Tech riser. I haven’t used risers since about this time, but those are the ones that were on there. I only have risers on one of my bikes now (450) and they are just factory tall I think.

Have you had any issues with the adhesive? Mine started to soften and drip a bit. Typical oil temp for an engine is up to 120C, the adhesive is only good to 82C so I guess that sort of makes sense
Not at all. My anodizing is all faded 🤣 but the glue is holding on both sides. Since whenever this video was made.
Not saying I could or would, but you have to commit hard and accept the falls to ride like that.

Excellent! 6 years and counting on this hack and still going 👍
Thanks for sharing, learned a lot. Thinking of maybe giving the 690/701 a chance, coming from Japanese bikes. I do have a 2006 KTM 525 EXC - SM, love it. Forgive me for saying, last time i checked KTM is 48% owned by India. Bajaj bought 14.5% stake in 2007, and the rest stake in 2020. So KTM is NOT 100% European. In another words, KTM hasn't been European since over 24 years. KTM is more or less 50% Indian, 50% Austrian. (Now the world knows more than before).
Big street/mobility market. They make all the smaller street models. Indian specs are better than Chinese specs. The 125-390 models over there are stupid popular. They aren’t making the dirt and bigger street bikes that we ride. You’ll see parts all over your bike with Italy, Austria etc.. With that said, the Japanese are barely Japanese anymore. The majority of their stuff is Chinese, not to mention they’ve barely innovated since the 90s.
I climbed a 15% grade 10 mile mountain road and got to 10% at the top. Turned around and turned the bike completely off coasting back down with only the rear brake and had 20% at the bottom.
😋 it probably has to be about that steep. Anything less and you’ll be right back on/off the gas to to have enough momentum.

I'm curious to know if this fix will work in my 23 701 or if i need to order a different year exc shifter. I have the same problem with the sharp edge. Don't think it'll fix the nasty chunky clunky shifting though. I have the same oem shifter style on my 2020 300 xcw and love it.
Yes. The bottom end of the bike is the same. Take the one off your 300XCW and try it. It’s probably just a little shorter/longer than the 4-stroke version, but everything should the same. Might give you a good enough idea. It should help with the clunky feeling shifting too, but that will soften with time. Straight cut gears.
Hi John! Cheers from Colorado! I'm wondering about changing sprocket size in the rear or front to get more speed. Would this sacrifice torque or would it be noticeable at all? Thanks!
Answered most of your own questions actually. I’d only gear for more top speed if you’re on the road with it. When I geared it up I lost on the bottom and didn’t really gain anything up top either because the power curve is so flat up top. On the road you’ll get the gradual acceleration to a higher speed, but off-road sections are generally too short unless you’re dirt roading or something. Does that make sense? I also felt like it robbed more battery. I imagine its because the motor had to work harder to get the power to the ground. Mode 3 was more like Mode 2 power and so I was twisting it harder. This could be helpful in slippery terrain however. All anecdotes, but my two cents.
@@JohnHowerton137 Thanks man

is it possible to switch the gears without pulling the clutch?
Yes, but not because of the clutch. You can shift without a clutch on any motorcycle, it's just not recommended. It should still be shifted correctly with the clutch.
I’ve got a 2006 my big brother just gifted it me after he rebuilt every nut and bolt
Sahweet!
Excellent review and so digging your trailer what a mint ideal 👏. I have the husky 701 and it’s a keeper 👌
Ive got the new-ish Tusk Waypoint back tire on my 690, cant even tell its a knobby on road, and is pretty darned decent on dirt. 75.00 tire. I tried a Motoz Rallz on back of my 890R, boy did that thing suck on the road. I took it off and sold it after a few rides. Never tried a tire that made that much noise and vibration, every little bit higher speed it howled louder and louder. Many reviews say its great on road. Buyer beware. If you take out the sintered brake pads and put in carbon pads, in the rear, the rear brake will mellow right out for dirt use. Its a way strong brake at the back, easy to lock up too much.
I’ll give that tire a look even though I probably can’t get it shipped. Yeah, It saddens me to say I wasn’t impressed by my set of Motoz at all. They seem like a cool company. Have to stand on mine to lock it with my super shorty lever. I love it! Haha! Great on our greasy roads 🤣
Solid review thanks .. I’m on a ‘21 and love the dang thing. I’m on the fence on putting a Scott’s damper on. What’s your advice Thanks
I’m pro damper, but not if you’re putting it on as a bandaid for bad handling on the street or something. That’s a setup issue. Now if you’re desert bombing or something… that’s a different story. I think the GPR stuff is nice because of how sleek they got them, but Scotts has a great reputation.
Would you recommend a 100/100-18 or 110/100-18 on the rear?
Either is fine. I’ve run a bunch of them both. What’s the primary application?
The volume of the 110 is probably more like the volume of the stock hybrid trials tire, so if you’re bouncing off roots and rocks you might like the bigger size for compliance.
Enduro, hard pack single track mostly. Maybe some small rocks and a a little mud.
Sounds like stuff I'd go with a MT 16 on amzn.to/3TB8UFW
So how were the tires on an off road?
Really not that great. The front wanders real bad. The rear howls. Not that I didn’t expect them to. They wear well. Overall I expected more. Still think the stock MT21 was better. FAR happier with the Metzler Karoo Extreme on the front now. Karoo extreme barely even feels like it’s a knobby. I just have a “meh..” Kenda Big Block on the back at the moment.
Hey John. Great content. I saw you charging the battery with 110 using an inverter. Could you provide info on the plug adapter and inverter. I did not see it in the short that you made.
Voltage transformer/converter: amzn.to/4dYXnsk no need for an adapter because the KTM charger is a two prong Euro plug. You just don’t use the 220 adapter that came with the charger. Kind of nice to remove one part when you add another 😋 Hope that helps 🤙

Awesome. Glad it helped. I wish I’d followed through with making both brakes work together, but too many projects that work gets in the way of! 🤣
Will the 450 toe shift lever piece fit on the 690 lever? Prefer not to by the entire lever, only the toe part of the shifter.
Probably not as it’s not based on the post 2017 mud free design.
@@JohnHowerton137 Yeah, in the vid you have both lever next to each other and the 450 lever looks thinner where the toe piece attaches. Tusk has a 450 toe piece for only $11. Grinding and thinning the end of the 690/701 lever looks possible per your posting. Thank you!!
