The reason many sidewalks in Plovdiv are so uneven is that they have kept the mature trees in the city. If those trees were taken down - like has happened in places like UK for "safety" - it would be so bleak and in the summer the buildings would be even hotter.

A few years ago (20)we visited Bansko via Plovdiv. Communism and mafia seemed to be the main things holding the average Bulgarian back from being entrepreneurs. Like you we experienced cows and dods roaming the street which had most of its grates missing. The hotel we were in was good quality but the staff were not used to hospitality standards. One example was lighting a log fire in the hotel lounge using a can of paraffin which stank the whole hotel out. The people though were very freindly and I thought the exchange of red string wristbands to loved ones at easter was very endearing.

As Bulgarian - this video is shot in/around Varna city. I personally think Burgas city on southern seaside to be better developed and beautiful. I personally live in Sofia. Bulgaria has a lot of mountains and forests. We are a nation that loves hiking a lot!

It really is a great country but if anyone asks I tell them it is horrible in hopes that they keep their brand of insanity out of Bulgaria.
