    another killer with the single wing is the counter/joker to the weak side. pull guard and tackle have the hb get the direct snap and qb and fb lead

      you run power and sweep 2-3 times in a row to the strong side and then hit him with the weak side joker. can go for big yardage.

    I was at a football game a couple years ago watching a family member play and he was against a team running the Shotgun double wing. Awsome offense too btw. There was a play that they called an audible and it shifted the TE to the BB and it became the single wing and I was like holy crap they're gonna score lol. 1 play and 70 plus yards later...I was like yep they scored lmao. Great to see in person.

    Great stuff coach! To sum up what coaching freshman football is like in 2 words id say: “growing pains”. I’ve been there it’s a lot of laughs and a lot of pull your hair out moments. Some notes on what i saw/heard: On defense I’m not a fan of the “4-4 stack”... is rather move those olbs closer to the LOS so they can force that ball back inside! As for the shotgun snap it’s just a matter of repetition and finding he kid who can do it. One alternative is the “deadball snap”... as much as my online coach hates it for some reason. Either way great call as a coach to cut it completely. I’ve seen WAY too many guys who can barely get the shotgun snap off jump back and forth from gun to undercenter and turn the Qb-center exchange into a mess. Anyway keep up the great work!

    • @coachsheffer6166
      @coachsheffer6166 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate it coach! We ended up going to a 3-4 defense later in the year and it worked out better for us. We also tried the deadball snap and we still could not get it to work. May have been teaching it wrong.

  • @jacobphillips1483
    @jacobphillips1483 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sweet play coach. I've seen a lot of spread offenses that have a handoff machine at QB and it is easy to stop those offenses. Man coverage across the board and cram the box. With this play you need to make defensive adjustments with those type of numbers to the playside. Looks like a great 10 yard and in insert! Thanks for sharing.

  • @goodmaro
    @goodmaro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that Chatham, NJ? The main distinction between single wing (and various other formations its age) and shotgun is that in shotgun the snap is received flat-footed or sometimes backpedaling. If you don't have a handoff & passing machine, then the player taking the snap can do it on the move. The possibilities for completing the snap can be increased by having more than one player in position to run onto the ball as it comes, and further by having the snapper look between his legs to aim the snap differently.

    • @coachsheffer6166
      @coachsheffer6166 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the insight! It's Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA. I received a Masters in Biology there.

      My family's from the Pittsburgh area, and I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Used to coach children in football in the Bronx, last year in Newton NJ. A friend of mine noted a predilection of scientists to coach football, or of football coaches to be scientists. Another on our team's coaching staff had a biochemistry Ph.D., works for Pfizer on active ingredient delivery systems. My own favorite offense is sidesaddle T (apparently the Beede version, there are others), a cross between single wing and wing T. But I got to install it only in 2015.

    • @coachsheffer6166
      @coachsheffer6166 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had much contact with the sidesaddle T ( I know nothing). I teach with quite a few people from Pittsburgh here in Northern VA and I spent a year there and loved it.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To create sidesaddle, take the blocking back from single wing and put him in an A gap, facing a sideline, with his hands in the snapper's crotch. Then you can snap the ball to him hand-to-hand, so you can run some wing T plays as well as single wing. Most single wing teams using that alignment had his butt to the wingback, but I have him facing the wingback (Dike Beede style, last at Youngstown State U.) to make jet/fly runs very simple.

  • @jacobphillips1483
    @jacobphillips1483 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey coach, thanks for the thoughts! I coach the veer out of I formation and I wanted to give some feedback. First, I think you are right on in deciding who you want to carry the ball. When playing a veer team, you want the weakest runner carrying the ball and by your defense, you can determine who is going to do that and rally up. For us, our QB is usually one of our best players and we like him getting downhill. But of course you can study/make an adjustment for the personnel you are facing. Two, when we see five technique defensive ends we get really excited. Our tackles would call Down, and we would block it as you showed. If your Mike is much better than our tackle, then you could stop us, but that is invitation for the fullback to run wild. Even if you cancel the fullback, there is a nice alley for the QB to run downhill. We want to get him downhill in a hurry and not bow it out. Three, if that team never runs weakside, this defense is a great set-up, but I would be worried about over rotating. We love running weakside veer and this is very susceptible to that. Fourth, for us, this defense is very open for complementary plays. Trap and blast give us very nice blocking angles on the Mike and kick out of the five technique. And if your safety is flying to pitch, we run Y Dump, which is fake veer and dump to the TE. If you are interested, I have a more detailed explanation on the veer on my channel (I know you mentioned you coached a veer team) and I plan on posting how we attack Odd defenses next week. As always, my answers to this look nice on the board but getting players to execute is another thing! Thanks for the video, appreciated the conversation!

      Coach Phillips thanks for your response. You are right I coached under Joe Prince at Fauquier HS in Warrenton VA. We ran old school Flexbone triple option with some wishbone and I formation. Close to what Army ran a few years back. I'm familiar with what you are talking about and I agree with everything you have said. I plan on checking out your channel here in a few mins. @coachsheffer6166 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jerry Burk I appreciate your views. I should probably revise my statement. I was trying to point out that when you go spread you can many times limit blocking at the point of attack. Hope you guys don't believe that I hate spread offenses. I have love for all offenses. Especially Urban Meyer.

    • @jerryburk8308
      @jerryburk8308 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coach Sheffer my comment probably came off as rather cynical, and snarky. That wasn't my intent. It's just that I've ran both, and they can both be wide out and complicated with the run game, or stripped down and simple. It just depends. Good video, and I too love the wedge. I've ran it from spread, single wing, double wing, and I-formation. Great play.
