    I have been struggling with coming up with the right questions to ask and where specific should I focus my research on. What do I really want to know about? What will help me get a clear vision of my project? This is my first research project, and I really don't have the guidance, I know the theoretical basics.

    Hey, thanks for the informative video. It's a great help. I was wondering can you send a short questionnaires when sending information about a study that one want to research on during the recruitment stage? The questionnaires would be for individuals who are interested to part in the study and the reason for it would be to get to know them such as age; ethnicity and about some insight of their experience relating to the the research aim. This would be to select diverse participants and the sampling approach would be the purposive sampling approach (maximum variation sampling). I'm trying to wrote my research proposal for my dissertation. Thanks.

    Can you tell us more about the 'provocative vignettes' advice? What's a time where you've used it? How did you go about framing the situation to draw your participant out? How do you avoid making your participant uncomfortable and breaking rapport?

    • @socialdesignwithkirstine
      @socialdesignwithkirstine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Trey, great questions! In general it is all about how you introduce the prompt. Be as explicit and meta about what is going to happen and maybe reassure that there are no right or wrong answers and that they can say if they don't feel comfortable talking about the scenario/statement. This will also help affirm the rapport before going ahead with the prompt. Also, prompts should be in the latter part of the interview so you have a chance to feel your participant out and strengthen the rapport during the interview. If during the interview you can sense that your participant would not be comfortable with this type of prompt, I would change strategy and maybe not do the prompt at all. I have, however, never experienced this to be the case personally. There are also various degrees of how "provocative" the scenarios/statements can be - I would maybe call them "stimulating" more than "provocative". With regards to framing the situation to draw the participant out, do you mean the interview situation or the scenario/statement on the card? Could you clarify what you mean if the above answer didn't cover it? :-)

    • @hardwarejunkie9
      @hardwarejunkie9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does help my understanding if you frame it as 'stimulating' rather than 'provocative'. I was taking it in terms of a similar strategy in debate, the provocative framing. During cross examination, you deliberately ask your question to propose a construction that's wrong, and clearly refutable, with the express intention of getting the other person to attack it and correct it. Such as, for instance, if you were to question someone over climate change and ask "Didn't we have record cold weather during February last year? Surely if it's getting warmer, we'd not be seeing record cold temperatures in Nevada". Someone with a climate background would immediately seize on how polar vortices form and how that fits into the model. The above tactic, however, can be pretty hostile and tends to be something more useful to an investigative journalist catching someone out rather than getting them to expound and find their voice. I think I see where you're going with it, but the method probably needs a clear example to show how you would construct a 'stimulating' prompt, such as: what criteria make it stimulating; how do you avoid biasing the answer; and are there good rules of thumb to determine if it's too stimulating? I'm reminded of how social media's driven by engagement, and how not all engagement is equal.

    • @socialdesignwithkirstine
      @socialdesignwithkirstine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardwarejunkie9 Of course the framing depends on the context of the questioning. I'm talking about it in the context of qualitative research where the style you would use in a cross examination would be horrific. And yes, that's some really good points about the didactics of it. Thank you for those :D
