    I feel like you're completely misunderstanding how grief works when you talk about Callaghan, i wont talk too much because i am not as articulate as this conversation needs to be, but grief is not a rational thing at all, you cant argue that he wasnt thinking rationally because thats the point. He wasn't, and grief isn't something that just goes away, just because he was calm and collected during his time at the University doesnt mean he wasnt still in grief and just hiding it because he felt he needed to move on or something of the likes. Besides, if you were handed exactly what you needed to not only get revenge but also at least try to recover your PRESUMABLY DEAD DAUGHTERS CORPSE for a proper burial (because lets be real, if your kid got sent to a dimension you knew nothing about and wasnt seen for years, you'd assume theyre dead) on a silver plater, would you not go a little crazy trying to use it? He wasnt going to be thinking about the collateral, he was thinking about avenging his daughter. Also, i think the line where he talks about Tadashi is also really good, it shows an actual grieg response, he truly cared for Tadashi, so when he is told "he died teying to save you" it most likely translates in his head as "he died because of you", which he immediately denies with anger. He is not emotionally equipped to deal with that, so he lashes out Sorry if i came off as rude or anything, im just really passionate about depictions of grief

    Slight disagreement on Ernesto De La Cruz re point 6. I agree that his villainy is subtly foreshadowed, but not in any of the examples listed in the video. Those are all hints that Hector is Miguel’s ancestor, not hints that De La Cruz is villainous. The real foreshadowing is just in De La Cruz’s character in general. Right off the bat, we’re introduced to him as a man who abandoned his wife and young daughter in the early 20th century for fame and fortune. That is, objectively, a scummy thing. The audience tends to gloss over this point in their minds because the family’s reaction to the abandonment was so extreme and resulted in such great conflict, and Miguel has such an admiration for him. (Even if that wasn’t technically De La Cruz that did that, he still caused those events…and frankly, this particular plot line doesn’t actually change all that much if Ernesto really is Miguel’s ancestor.) Furthermore, when Miguel tells us about De La Cruz, it’s clear that De La Cruz is a determined individual, willing to go to great lengths to achieve his goals; “Do whatever it takes to seize your moment!” Again, we initially see this in a positive light because we see it through Miguel’s eyes, as an inspirational virtue from his hero. When we meet De La Cruz in person, however, he elaborates on this idea in response to Miguel’s questions. He admits that he considers it necessary to abandon your family, if necessary, to “seize your moment.” De La Cruz’s evil actions are the natural result of his philosophy, and it serves as an eye-opening lesson for Miguel, who up until this point has held this philosophy himself. (I’ve seen several people who watch this movie note that, in the scene where De La Cruz is bonding with Miguel (“I have a great-great-grandson!!!”) De La Cruz acts like a deadbeat dad who gets their kid twice a year and shows the kid off to everyone like they’re super proud of this kid they barely know. Accurate, and telling.)

    I consider most of this is justified.... until you get to Zootopia, the whole point of Bellweather's motivation is what the entire movie itself is about - it's LITERALLY a movie about what happens when the majority goes against a minority for reasons that don't exist. This is Disney showcasing racism. Minorities among humanity suffer every day just like the predators in Zootopia did. Not because they DID anything, but because they weren't part of the majority. Also, someone taking the fall when they clearly have done nothing wrong (the mayor) happens ALL THE TIME. That's why it's in the movie. Was she the best twist villian? No... but I think you just missed like the point that this is for kids (people younger than you) and about a topic that most don't like to talk about - racism - which can be very complicated in terms of talking about the reality of it. I think Zootopia was actually the only one that did good with their topic versus the other two.

  • @wolfywise
    @wolfywise 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    What really hurts Zootopia for me is that its message about racism dances around and avoids the topic of systemic aspects of it. Like, there's elements in there that imply the proliferation of drugs among predators (minorities) to destabilize those communities, which are also poor and disenfranchised by design through underhanded policies. This happens a lot with these kinds of stories, especially from big studios, and I have a feeling its for the same reasons why the Lorax's themes were bastardized in illuminations adaptation. In the original story of the Lorax, the Onceler is faceless because he represents the faceless apathy of corporations. The movie, by giving the Onceler a face, twists the theme into being about the individual actions of people. The "Good Billionaire corrupted by others" bullshit (its all propaganda do not trust them). It's suspected this change was made so as to not paint companies and big business in a negative light, because the original story is that scathing and blunt about it. For Zootopia, properly doing a story about racism and its relationship with the systems it interacts with would mean pretty heavily demonizing the police as an entity of the state, which is something police unions heavily lobby against in the film industry. As result, there's probably a lot of executive pressure on filmmakers to avoid going too deep into certain issues lest it cause "problems." This is probably why so many films that try to tackle these problems end on a "the status quo is fine, we just need to beat the bad guys."

    I dont hate Nausicaa like you do but it is absolutely Miyazaki's weakest film. The art style and music are genuinely great and hold up in this "vintage" aesthetic along with it setting the groundwork of Miyazaki's future movies and themes. But wow the writing and characters are just not interesting, and I was shocked by just how dull the story was. I think the other issue is that I don't think the movie encourages you to think creatively or take in the imagination of the world Miyazaki is building because of just how on the nose the characters are with explaining stuff to us. Nausicaa observes what is in front of us and tells us what it is repeatedly and I think it makes for an underwhelming way in how it fleshes out its world and characters. I know that this was based on a manga written by Miyazaki and it very much feels like it is trying to cram in as much information as possible.

    NOTE: If you haven't watched the TvM franchise, then don't read this comment. I recommend watching all the seasons to have a better understanding. Anyways, when it comes to youtube twist villains, I believe Mowcoss from Triangle vs Monkey is the best one. Lemme explain. Motivation: In Part 37, Triangle asks Mowcoss why he wants the Router. In response, he says that he discovered the biomes and he created the Router to not only navigate through them, but to also activate Project Reset. He also says that he wants the new concepts that arrive to know nothing but his rule. Which sounds like a villain wanting power, but however, in Part 39, when Mowcoss sees his work destroyed, he says he did because he was somebody's bad idea and that he didn't want to feel small. So I think he earns this point. Being evil just for the sake of being evil: Similar to what Waternoose did to Sully and Mike, he uses Prime Mechagodzilla to blast Triangle off into the sky, and we see him unconscious at the end of the video. And the reason was not for fun, but to get him "out of the picture". So I believe he gets this point. The Reveal: In Part 36, Ghidorah (more commonly known as Noodle Neck in the franchise) throws the Router to Mowcoss to save him from the malitcha. After that, Mowcoss walks towards the Router and grabs it. But instead of running to the main protagonists, he walks back to the malitcha. Noodle Neck says he's working for them. But, Mowcoss corrects him, saying they work for him. Now I don't know how to say it, but the fact he walks towards the malitcha is shocking to the audience considering that in Season 2, when he was first introduced, he was a companion to Noodle Neck and even offered him to stay in his bar as long as he helped him at work during the two months after the "Hollow Earth Slaughter". Which makes the audience think he's a good guy. So yeah, another point earned. The Monologue: Now I talked about this in the motivation section, but he didn't say it not to brag about, but because Triangle asked him. So uhh... yup earned once again, An already existing villain: Throughout the franchise, a threat that the protagonists encounter here and there is Mecha Monk- Ahem! Uhh... I mean Mecha Kong. Which makes us believe he's the big bad. So yup, congrats Mowcoss. The Subtlety: In Season 2, he measures Triangle to find the perfect build for his "bodyguard". In reality he was building Prime Mechagodzilla. Not only that, later, Mowcoss talks to Mecha Kong (through a computer) about Triangle and Monkey escaping. But, he explains how he has a project to finish, and in the S2 compilation, we're shown a scene of Mowcoss building something. That something being of course, Prime Mechagodzilla. Though I do think the scene where Mowcoss is building Prime Mechagodzilla did ruin it, since before, he said he was working on a project. Which led to some people making theories about him being the Developer. Which did come true. So uhh... I guess he doesn't earn it (sorry, Mowcoss) The amount of time of being a villain: I do think he earns this one. Because throughout Part 37 - 40, he actually does have enough time to be a villain. To better explain this, in Part 38, it mostly focuses on Triangle recovering with MG 21. And he's seen for like 20 seconds in that part. In Part 39, he dosen't really do anything. He just activates Project Reset and when Triangle and Monkey arrive to stop the Reset, he simply orders Mecha Kong to keep him away. And just watches them fighting. That is until, Part 40, when he sees his work destroyed, he calls Prime Mechagodzilla, and controls him to kill the main protagonists. And that my friends is why I believe Mowcoss is a great twist villian. Let me know your opinions on what you think. Anyways, hope you all have a great day/night and God bless you all!

      @@pistachiosforeveryone There's actually a LOOOT of 20th century animated films that aren't in your ranking videos. I don't think anyone has ever even listed all of them, but I can list some more examples. Rankin Bass and Topcraft had a few other traditional animated films I know of, including a sequal to Frosty the Snowman, a couple based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and another based on a novel called Flight of Dragons (Also, as a side note: The Last Unicorn is a novel by Peter S. Beagle, not something Rankin Bass came up with). They also had at least a couple other stop motion holiday specials, including Rudolph's Shiny New Year and Rudolph & Frosty's Christmas In July. There's also those old Disney movies that are mostly live action with animated segments, like Marry Poppins, Bedknobs & Broomsticks and The Reluctant Dragon. And of course, there's Song of the South, which you can't watch anywhere and Disney would like the world to forget, because the live action segments are considered racist (even though Disney has done much worse, such as in Peter Pan, for example). There's also Osamu Tezuka's old works, like Kimba, Bagi and Unico. I'm surprised you never brought those up, since they're some of the earliest and most famous Japanese animated films. There's also plenty of other obscure old Japanese animated films, like the two Galaxy Express 999 films and that 1969 Japanese Puss In Boots that became the mascot for Toei Animation. There's also plenty of other western animated films you didn't mention, like Charlotte's Web, The Brave Little Toaster, Once Upon a Forest, Freddie the Frog, Babes In Toy Land, Watership Down, Rover Dangerfield, Rock & Rule, Heavy Metal, A Goofy Movie, An Extremely Goofy Movie, Plague Dogs, Felidae, Bebe's Kids and that's still just scratching the surface, but I think we've ventured deep enough into this bottomless rabbit hole.

    it's funny how a realistic villain makes for a bad twist villain/movie villain in general. I mean most evil people irl are evil for the sake of it or want power to have power. or do you think a certain austrian painter had a "justifying motivation" that goes beyond I want power and hate certain groups

    I'm not sure if it counts since it's a series rather than a movie, but The Ghost and Molly McGee has at least a few characters that could be brought into this discussion. Ezekiel Tugbottom was a fraud similar to Ernerto, where the true savior was someone else and he just claimed their deeds as his own. There's the Chens, who are friendly to humans, but later on are revealed to be ghost hunters. There's Geoff, who turns out to be the ghost that scared the Chens, which is what caused them to become ghost hunters. AND there's Andrea Davenport, who is the reverse equivalent of a twist villain, where she acts like a jerk at the start of season 1, but is later revealed to be the one who saved the McGees from losing their house.
