The Hours: “Missus Dalloway Said She Would Buy the Flowers Herself”
มุมมอง 433ปีที่แล้ว
As Virginia Woolf begins to write the first sentences of her novel, Mrs. Dalloway, in a suburb of London, 1923, Laura Brown cracks open the finished novel in Los Angeles, 1949. While they read out the novel's first sentences together, the opera fully transitions from Virginia to Laura. Sung by Joyce DiDonato as Virginia Woolf and Kelli O'Hara as Laura Brown with the chorus of The Hours, conduct...

As a woman, pass me that flight attendant anytime.
Hmmm.... this was ok... But I thought this would be... Better.
iconic
Susan Egan has one of my favorite versions of this song EVER!!! Sure it's more accurate for Sally to a mediocre singer, but you just can't pass up on someone so talented! Not to mention her EYES! She's so expressive and her eyes are so beautiful! Her eyes remind me a lot of how Natasha Richardson did a lot of acting with her eyes. Anyone know who was playing Emcee at this performance?
33:27
1:46:02 and 1:46:59
Anika was my favorite Dreamgirl.
this is how i find out neil patrick harris does musicals..
1:06:30 SAY IT SOMEHOW
I like this version. They let the chorus be the chorus and not a bunch of entertaining acrobats. The chorus was supposed to blend and be background to help tell the story not in the foreground. The acrobats are great in the new version but that wasn’t the concept or chorus function intended for this show. And Ben Vereen is an incredible leading player and Katt a good Pippin.
Absolutely love the Trumpet Solo @2:41-3:07, it gives me goosebumps everytime 💯

Is there a more moving moment in the history of American Musical Theatre than 1:55:10-1;56:30, esp the high note on "My little love, CLARA."? (1:56:24)? Well, maybe "Fable" in the last 4 and a half minutes of the show.
Anyone notice the black extras standing around in the background? Makes you wonder where they stood on the whole whites vs Puerto Ricans thing
Thank God Tony Mordente supervised this particular filming because Robbin’s told Russ Tamblyn there would be absolutely no tumbling, which Tamblyn was well known for. Robbin’s later recanted and when he put together “Robbin’s on Broadway” in the 80s recreating his most famous numbers, Riff was tumbling.
I have loved the theatrical version of this story for decades, so I approached this Broadway musical production fearfully. I wanted it to be something special...and it is SUCH a delight...what an amazing production. With no disrespect to the film cast, especially the remarkable Olivia de Havilland, I must say, I think the way Meg Johnson is portrayed here is far better. Deeply moving and sympathetic, her touch of southern humor brought the character to a new level, while reminding the audience "everything will be alright." Just a lovely, lovely production. Thank you so much.
Kathy is so underrated in this play
Victoria Clark gave a truely unforgettable performance. What a privilege to see/hear her.
@2:15 Classic Shot
The crazy truth: I was a child when this was on Broadway, and I know who Dean Jones is from Disney (The Love Bug, remember?) but had no idea he could even sing. Same for Beth Howland--I remember her from Alice as Vera, and Barbara Barrie, who was Barney Miller's wife. They were all phenomenally gifted people who are probably more remembered for those silly beloved tv shows and kids' films. How delightful that this is preserved.
Much better than new one
They’re both great

Adore this version of the musical. Raúl Esparza is a wonder.
As a theatre-goer of 55+ years, I can honestly say that my all time favorite is Pippin. Great show! Not a bad song in the entire show and so well presented. Saw the original on Broadway in 1972 and the revival a few years ago. Both productions were first rate!
My birth year when this was made, and it is so good all the elements from the singing the writing the music. I don't like musicals only Sondheim, only Sondheim. This is close to my favorite of his.
Thank you for sharing this. I was at this performance with my mother and it’s one of my favorite memories. Fun fact: The cast rehearsed in the theater earlier in the day and it was kind of a cluster! Raul almost fell off the stage a few times! We were nervous when the curtain fell incorrectly but the performance was perfect after that! I still have chills thinking about it.
Now I know the “inspiration” for cirque de soliel.
What a document. The pinnacle of analog recording with New York players and Broadway singers.
Melts me everytime
The best good old times where there were no smart phones social media and covid time being!
Saw the original production on Broadway and I still sing the music💞
I love her
Having just seen the recent revision in Los Angeles (2024), I come back to THIS version as the gold standard. This doc recording is brilliant; as a former theater major who once performed in this show, there's something so vibrant, alive, and EXCITING watching this. So much talent and humanity involved... Dean's version of "Being Alive" NEVER fails to bring tears and goosebumps, Elaine's struggle to sing her iconic song... having an inside seat to this process is a treasure. Bookmarked!
Grown-up in London myself being a transgender woman all I wanted was my surgery and yes I got that surgery at 17 and my brother is gay. My family are so amazing. My mum worked in the theatre and the opera house the English National Opera so we was surrounded with all of her amazing friends And music my brother being a gifted singer my dad working in stadiums with Queen and the biggest band he played every instrument and very well but the reason I’m saying this is because I would lose myself in music, especially the music and films like death becomes her calamity Jane return to oz my breakfast at Tiffany’s Westside story Rocky horror picture picture show and growing up in Primos Hill being friends with Patricia Quinn, my mum great friends with Kenneth Williams one of my favourite movies carry on screaming I would lose myself in these amazing films my brother as well and comedy such as Romyand Michele’s high school reunion , Muriel‘s wedding and just great Classics but I love Elaine stritch and I love company
I played this show in a civic theater production in the early 1970s, just after it was licensed. Speaking as a performer, may I suggest that whoever the recording studio producer was should have been gagged, if not painfully tortured for being such a royal $%#^ to people who could do what he never could... Not Hal Prince or Sondheim, but the jerk running the recording session.
Classic!
Oh, just imagine if they would have filmed them on Broadway. I can't even find a picture
i absolutely love patti’s interpretation of joanne, my favourite aside from elaine stritch’s, and surprisingly i love neil patrick harris’s performance (although raul esparaza’s will always be my favorite) but i don’t love the performances of jenny, marta, and kathy
RIP Bobby Banas aka "Joyboy". (1933 - 2024)
Sondheim understands the voice wonderfully! While he was hard on them, he did understand its abilities!
Beth Howland was always known just for the goofy character on Alice, but she was an incredible musical performer.
If I was to ask you, in the past tense, how do you kill a whale?
Harpooned 😂😂
Wonderful, wonderful musical. Unerrated and I wish it was more popular. Perhaps as times go on.....
Tell me again how many people got off the train.....
She nailed it!
I was just thinking about how I wish we could’ve heard this song in the movie but at least there is this!!
I recently read the late Mary Rodgers's memoir "Shy." I hadn't been aware that Sondheim picked her brain about marriage when writing "Company" as he had no direct experience to draw on. The whole book sheds a very interesting light on their relationship.
I prefer Raul Esparza as Bobby (just me) but this was great and didn't know Stephen Colbert could sing. Thanks
this prologue and "the Quintet" were two of the best scenes ever introduced to us in the history of cinema. I am now 76 years old. a non Latino. the sharks were easily my favorite. George Chakiris was the coolest of them all. we were in 8th grade. even every macho boy wanted to learn how to dance after this.
Sondheim is such an obnoxious little pr**k.
What gives you that impression?
Russ Tamblyn is awesome!!!
