Building A Clock To Stop Looking Like A Moron
มุมมอง 293ปีที่แล้ว
I walked into my classroom a few days before the start of our school year and I found the wall clock on the floor shattered into about fifteen pieces. At the time of this video were about three quarters of the way through the year. I still didn't have a new clock. And yet! Pretty much every day. Multiple times a day! I would look up to that spot to see the time. Did I order a new clock through ...
How to Make a Sheet Metal Phone Stand - Fabrication Project
มุมมอง 2.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This sheet metal phone stand is another great beginner sheet metal fabrication project to learn and teach a lot of basic hands on workshop skills. The first attempt at this in my classes went well, the students enjoyed the project and actually wanted to take them home and show them off around school. And these can be knocked out in like 20-30 minutes by a mostly complete beginner which works we...
How To Make a Sheet Metal Box - Shop Class Project

This is another great beginner sheet metal project I use in my shop classes. I use it to teach print reading skills and order of operations to my students. If you're not a teacher these can be great little storage devices to have around the shop or turned into small drawers with the addition of a simple pull or handle. If you teach shop class of some kind I've started a little website to docume...

Sheet Metal Vise Jaw Covers - Shop Class Project
มุมมอง 5222 ปีที่แล้ว
Vise jaw covers are a handy thing to have around any shop with a vise. I use this project to teach students how to use a sheet metal brake and to further their understanding of measurement, shop safety, and print reading. Once they've made their own pair they can use these covers on the rest of their projects during our sheet metal unit. If you teach shop class I'd love to hear from you in the ...

You are awesome. I'm going to run this with my shop class next year.
Thanks for watching! Let me know how they go with your class next year.

What was the music? Liked it. Thanks for sharing
It's just a song from TH-cam's free library of music you can use for videos. That song was called To the Sun and Back by TrackTribe. Thanks for watching!
What program was used for the printed out drawing?
I used Fusion 360 for the drawing.
Do you have a source to learn how to do dog tags?
This video is the method and resource I use when I teach it to my students. Other than that I'm sure there are many other resources out there than mine on making dog tags. Thanks for watching!
Seems like a lot of work. I’m hoping I can buy blanks and mark them with my laser
I just use this project to introduce a lot of basic shop concepts to my students. We make them from metal you could get at any big box store. Not sure where to buy bulk blanks from. Thanks for watching!

Is there any way to add a stem using the spot welder?
I'm sure there is but I have not found an easy way. We tried putting threads on the end of a scrap piece of rod and then using nuts to hold it on, but it didn't look good and was more effort than it was worth
Where do I buy the metal squares or metal sheets? Does Home Depot have them?
I would imagine any hardware/big box store would have metal you could use for this. If you have any local fabrication shops they would probably have the metal for these too.
Where do I find the metal square?
Any hardware store would probably have metal for this. If you have any local fabrication shops they should have metal for this project as well I would think.
Should I cut metal to fall away from me or towards me taking a risk of an eye injury?
You always want to be wearing safety glasses of some sort when you are cutting metal. I generally always cut away from my body when using hand shears. After some practice you will get the feel for where the metal might go as you're cutting and then you can angle it away from you for safety.
thank you for this video. my girlfriend really loved the rose
You're welcome! That's awesome!
I work at a STEM charter middle/high school and we offer metal shop! I also never took metal shop in hs but I do know many people that did! Thanks for sharing this!

normal procedure to mark from two edges at 90 to each other………..
Is this a question about marking the lines?
I was always told not to hammer that seam edge flat but to retain the slight teardrop shaped edge. It stays straight and rigid that way. It gets wavy and flimsy when hammered flat. The hems I mean.
Interesting, I've always been taught to do it the way I showed on the video. But that would make sense as I can see how that tear drop shape would make it more rigid. I'll have to play around with it to see if I could teach it that way without just making it harder for my students to make it without a bunch of dents in their hems.
If you REALLY want to get fancy-schmancy, cut out a coat hanger rod and fold a suitable length into each teardrop edge. Compress the flap flat AFTER the rod using a vice or a hydraulic press to form a rounded, strong shape. When done correctly, not only will it look far more impressive, it will also be vastly more strong and durable over time. I should warn you though, most junior high age students become far too frustrated to pull it off. In my day, even high school aged students often found it required too much patience. However, when done correctly, it is a sight to see. Especially after a beautiful coat of paint is applied to the metal.
What would you charge a customer for that exact box?
I have no idea. I just teach my students how to make them.
@@shopclassbuilds If you have no idea, how have you made it thus far in life?
Good question, just one step at a time I reckon.
@@shopclassbuilds Have you come to know Jesus yet?
@@generalleigh7387 shut up
Why not put the tabs on the inside?
Generally it looks better with the tabs on the outside. But it also rounds that corner off better so you don't have a sharp edge that could cut you when you move the box around.
why is that gonna stop the necks holes stripping?
I'm not sure it would I guess. The neck plate is supposed to help relieve the stress on the holes like a washer on a nut. If you drill the holes the wrong size or use the wrong screws the neck probably won't hold either. In my class the only times this has happened with the neck is when my students forgot to use their neck plate.
Hi there. Can i put liquid into it?
The way we make them, they would not hold liquid.
@@shopclassbuilds Alright. Thanks!
what kind of schools do they have in america? this is insanely cool
I teach at a general public high school. Fortunately we still offer shop classes to teach trade skills.
Do you want to learn? I can teach you a few simple songs to get started.
Yeah I do want to learn at some point, right now it's just a priority thing and I haven't wanted to make it a top priority. If you have any resources I'd be interested though!
this is great. I did something similar with my welding students. They make three small welded joints over a few days in class and then they have to put them together in a creative way to hold their phone. Definitely grabs their attention a little bit when they get to use their phone for a project. Thanks for your videos
Thanks! That sounds cool! I've got welding coming up after the semester break. I may have to try something like that out. Thanks for watching!
New subscriber 🔥🔥🔥 DONT STOP KEEP EM COMING!! Great teacher bro!!
Thank you! I've got more planned, just slow with the making of videos. Thanks for watching
Great video. Very concise. Do you mind explaining the process of sanding and finishing sheet metal boxes?
Because the metal we use is untreated and straight from a local manufacturing plant we need to prep the metal before painting. To do that we just sand the box with 80-120 grit sand paper to remove any rust, grease, and grime. Then we run it wash it up with some water and some paper towels. Once it's dry we can apply the paint. Thanks for watching and sorry it took me so long to reply.
awesome...i'm teaching metal shop this year...thanks for the detail video

Appears to me that you're a terrible teacher. So glad that I'm not in your class.
This guy has a great variation to that th-cam.com/video/4eXnYqNkF2o/w-d-xo.html
Finally! Clear,simple instructions! Thanks!
You're welcome!
How did you make the shape for the crest? I don't see it in the Tinkercad shapes.
Yeah it's not a common shape that they have premade. I just used a simple square/rectangle and grouped it with a cylinder. Sorry for the late reply, the end of the school year is always a busy time.

Excellent work, what is the thickness of the sheet?
I think it was around 24 to 25 gauge. But we have used anything from 22-26 gauge for these boxes over the years. Thank you for watching!
Thanks, you are a very good teacher. I am glad and grateful I found your channel. Stay Safe and God Bless.
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Nicely done and explained. You could also cut the tabs off the sides and than weld the four side edges and finish the box off without and spot welds on the sides. Than the boxes would look smooth and clean. Just an idea as an option... Thumbs Up!
Thanks for watching! I like that idea but usually when I teach this in my classes the students have barely had experience using a hammer so we hold off on teaching them to weld until a little later in the year.
@@shopclassbuilds why not put taps on in
Wasn't over eager at the start, but once painted (even without the stencils) they turned out to be great little holders! I'll bet they would be great little gifts for stocking stuffers!
Thank you! Pretty simple design, which works good for the level of students I teach. I agree they look much better with some paint on the. Thanks for watching!
Nice little shop box.
Thank you!
Great, helpful video! Do you have a project description with criteria/constraints/instructions/rubric or anything of the sort that you'd be willing to share? Thanks so much for the help!
Sorry for the late reply, heading into the end of the school year always gets a bit hectic. In the link in the description you'll find an article on this project, which has my Project Handout but that's all I've created for it at this point. I use this at the beginning of the year so I don't grade it based on a rubric, its mostly completion grade to get the students started off on the right foot in the class. And I just explain it in class. I do have it written out on our LMS class site but haven't made a document for a description. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane from HS shop class.
You're welcome! Did you have a favorite shop class project you did in school? I'm constantly moving my shop classes back towards old school projects instead of the newer tech based ones I try and most of my students don't grasp into.
Thanks a lot brother (praveen from india )
You're welcome!
Interesting project, sir. The level of tech in HS Shop class has certainly surged forward since I was a student 40+ years ago! Back in my day, the project would probably have focused on 1) using a jig to cut a circle from a glued-up board at the band saw, 2) routing a recess in the back of the wood to house the movement and rounding over the outer edge of the circle, then 3) perhaps casting numbers for the face from lead at the forge. Finally, of course, would be the finishing stage of the project, sanding by stepping through the grits, using either a wood stain or burning the wood, followed by a coat or two of an oil based urethane top coat. Applying a flock layer on the back of the clock would be the cherry on top. ;-) Take care and God Bless.
Thanks! Yeah it has even changed a lot in the 12-13 years I've been teaching. All of this newer more advanced equipment is a bit hit or miss with my students. Some love it, some want nothing to do with it because they have to use a computer. So the old school shop class projects are definitely still around and preferred by most of my classes.
This video was very well made. Thank you for all the details. Have a great day.
Thank you and you're welcome!
