What do you mean "html links" and "java script links?" Can you elaborate?

You get authority by links from other sites. It does not matter if you content is "good" or "bad," or even if it is "helpful" or "unhelpful." It only matters that it is relevant (about your topic) and that you have authority (links from other sites).

@GrumpySEOGuy yes but if you have a message truly worth sharing, it would be more likely to get used by other websites. A peer reviewed journal that has 100s of citations is likely a very useful paper, not likely because they paid the fee to have it mentioned frequently.

Absolutely. Better content is more likely to be shared, and therefore will get more authority. But the content itself is not a ranking factor. And if you have a brand new website with really wonderful content, no one is going to ever find it because it won't rank for anything (no authority). People misunderstand and think that helpful content will rank higher. It won't. Authoritative content will rank higher. Helpful content might be authoritative, but it might not be. Understand that on the internet, people do not find all the content and only link to the "best." The internet is full of bias and gaming the system. Just like with pop music, high ranking doesn't mean good.

@@GrumpySEOGuy I see your point now, what you're saying is that quality of the content itself isn't properly metricized by the ranking system, so the engine relies on back links to make assumptions about its usefulness (more mentions must mean it's more useful etc.) That makes sense-people used to spam keywords in metadata and use tricks like white font to manipulate rankings. I'd like to think Google's system is evolving, prioritizing organic and well-crafted content. Otherwise it's just a game of who can afford the best backlink strategy. Perhaps AI-based web crawlers might be able to make better judgements about overall content quality

@@lexi6081 Exactly. Search engines try to determine quality by looking at how quality content would be treated. It's a bit like trying to predict popular music without actually listening to it. You could look at downloads. You might think better songs would get more downloads. And they plausibly do! But not necessarily. Good content probably would get better (not more) backlinks. But not necessarily. The problem with this is that there is lots of great content that won't ever rank because it has no authority... and, you guessed it, there is tons of bad quality content that does rank. And now you know why.

Title tags means title tag. In the head of your website. H1 means header.
