This is a lovely model, i use the one my uncle owns down his shed and it's such a wonderful little engine. Also loving how the structure of the review closely resembles that of Sam's trains haha

Thomas catches a thief is signed by Christopher Awdry.

Mainline Model Railways ( Pailtoy) went out of business in 1984 your model is around forty years old. Mainline diesels were better than the steam locomotives they produced Mainline models trend to get mixed reviews from good to bad. Mainline toolings went to Bachmann who still use toolings today. Mainline was better in detail than Hornby or Lima in the late 1970s/80s. You only need to run in new locos as older ones have already been run in. Clean the wheels first the Warship has a pancake motor you can dismantle it do not lose the springs and brushes or the little white washers also clean the pick ups . Before dismantling photo the motor so you will know what goes were and the wiring There is tutorials on TH-cam you can watch its sounds hard but the more you do it the easier it gets. Locos should run much better don't force an un -serviced loco to run it will damage it. Mainline coaches and wagons are very good worth buying.

Worksplate would read “Built in Swindon” with year of build shown. For info, the head code should be read as “One Alpha Three Four”, which indicates a class 1 Express bound for London (“A” usually indicating London), then 3 & 4 indicating the individual train. For its age, the model is in great condition. Hope this is of some use / interest.

I would like to know your thoughts on the Hornby Thomas range as I currently have Thomas and a few rolling stock and would like to know if I should get any more or get the Bachmann ones. They should have used the 2P, T9 or D16/3 tooling for Edward.

I'm not sure how that one picks up current but an old Hornby Class 37 I got picks up through the axles. This didn't move but I dribbled some white spirit (brush cleaner) through the axles to liquify any congealed lubricant and absorbed the old, black stuff with toilet roll. I then relubed the axles with decent oil and off it went! It's still slow but I'll have to get the commutator clean & brushes. Yours sounds like you need some grease on the gears to quieten it down!

I wish Hornby kept to this tooling of Flying Scotsman because the ones they've done following 2015 have got a matte finish to them.. Such as the railroad model, I've still got my old Flying Scotsman from the 2008 R-1072 set but sadly it stopped running in 2011 and of course you had R-1039 as well which was the late 1990's Flying Scotsman set..

I wouldn’t recommend running early hornby/ hornby dublo/ triang models on newer track, the flanges are larger and bounce on the sleepers, even breaking points if it stays like that, what I would recommend: Triang Jinty/ Dublo R1 = Jinty/E2 wheels Triang Scotsman/Princess= Black 5 wheels
