Chinese new year is not the lunar new year. Chinese people and anyone who follow the Chinese traditional culture also call it spring festival or Chun Jie.
The lunar new year is based on the moon cycle but Chinese new year is determined by a combination of the lunar calendar and the solar calendar and The Chinese heavenly stamps and earthly branches which is called “ Tian gan di zhi” in Chinese and the 24 solar terms. This is because in ancient China people relied on farming for their livelihood and farming was closely tied to the changing seasons and an accurate calendar was crucial for agriculture production.
If you only followed the Lunar calendar for farming, the planting time would get messed up, just like how this year’s Lunar New Year falls on 27th June 2025.
There is a Chinese saying: the whole year’s work depends on a good start in spring.
