It says a lot more about the person who thinks that chosing solitude is Lonely, than it does the accuracy of what they 'believe' to be observing. To me, a 51 yr old "oldschool punkrock chick" who has been calling herself an Urban Hermit for over 20 years, it says that you- for whatever reasons you have, aren't comfortable enough with yourself as who you currently know yourself to be at the moment to comprehend the difference between being alone and 100% at peace and Feeling alone. Over the past 12 months if I didn't need products from the store for my animals and myself I would have gone without speaking to Anyone except my neighbor, who is to me quite like the essential support that Richard has with his situation. He's become my best friend I think greatly in part because he is happiest in solitude as well but we both know that human contact-QUALITY Human Contact-is essential for good mental health and we both feel grateful that we've found that in one another. It's only when life takes too many turns for me to keep up with and I fall into depression that I feel actually alone these days and that's only because my little sister died unexpectedly a few years ago and she was the only person in my life who knew me absolutely and with her loss I was delivered the shock of realizing that Everything I thought I knew about death is all wrong, and with that so is true about life. If it weren't for the living support of my neighbor I would be who knows where right now. It's perfectly healthy to prefer to be alone. Psychologists have been saying for years that these are the people who are most at peace with being human, the human they are. Maybe peace isn't the best term but the point is that they don't need others to distract away from themselves and whatever it is that keeps them from working on their fears or getting to know even what they are. It's insane to me that it's still promoted that it's more socially acceptable to live life to death as a virtual Stranger to one's self by non-stop surrounding yourself with people and the distraction of their lives than to simply be okay with being happy by yourself for the same amount of time. It's a narrative but it's not the truth.

My heart breaks saying when the gal said Richard wasn’t Richard anymore…….EVERY aspect of each of us……MAKES US HUMAN. He shared compassion…….lets all strive for that aspect!

He was an empath, that was just tired of absorbing years and years of other peoples emotions, negative and positive. He was getting older, he retired and kept to himself after that. He sounds like he was an amazing, caring person. R.I.P. Richard ❤
