Gottschalk was often dubbed "the American Chopin." The date of the composition is significant as it was written during the Civil War. Born in New Orleans, Gottschalk was an avid supporter of the Union and detested slavery.

I have heard many superb performances of this wonderful work (Why isn't it played more often?) The orchestra looks like a youth orchestra - excellent playing. The pianist is amazing, always integrating with the orchestra or standing out from the orchestra, with just the right balance. It's so sensitive - and what magical piano sounds she gives us. Thirty minutes of pure joy.

reminds me of that Rachmaninov prelude (or is it etude tableau?)

What an interesting surprise. She's got a deep feel for this music, clarity, and steel hands like that of a man. Her performance somewhat reminds me of the Lazar Berman recording with the Finish orchestra on radio, a popular rendition. But her playing drifted a bit to sounding continental, such as in the last dance movement, than in the Russian bravura style. This orchestra sounds excellent too. I don't know how it compares to the old Zell orchestra but it still sounds top notch. Also, the recording sound is wonderful.

Este belíssimo concerto me lembra muito do meu tempo de estudante do Curso Noturno do Liceu Nilo Pecanha, de Niterói, onde conheci minha esposa. Isso foi há 56 anos.

What grand pianism..Nothing thrown away trivially, nor held longer than appropriate...singing sound! All about the music and not about pyrotechnical display!

Que excelente interpretación con mucha delicadeza y matices a docencia de otros pianistas que tocan el de una manera muy estacata y como si fuera un tambor o una batería

不是特别好，最大的问题是钢琴错音太多，特别是最后几个大二度的八度，一把错音，我都感到心惊，怕搁在台上。另外俄罗斯民族的味道太少，乐队木管声部音准比较差，有几个纯8度，不知道跑到哪里去了，而且整个乐队不够澎湃。
