The Fiddling Violin
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ต.ค. 2015
Hi! I'm Mandy aka The Fiddling Violin. This channel is to follow my journey as an adult beginner violinist/fiddler. I started this channel as a fun way to keep myself motivated, to practice with a performance video in mind.
I've never learned to play an instrument before, so this is all a new experience for me! I never learned to read music or play anything before, so I am a complete newbie in this musical journey.
Good thing I chose something easy, right? ;)
I got my first violin on Friday, July 24, 2015, and started taking lessons in August 2015.
Aside from learning to play the violin, I enjoy photography and hiking to places to take pictures.
If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask in the comment section of any of my videos.
Thanks for visiting! Hope you enjoy taking a look at my journey!
Please subscribe if you'd like to continue following my journey :)

Some fiddling over some summer scenery. I prefer this tune slow and sappy, but also playing a slightly up tempo version here as well.

An imperfect take. Backing track provided by Kiana June Weber’s Fiddle Club. Been feeling the sad sappy tunes lately.
Year of Jubilo -Testing antique fiddle
มุมมอง 202ปีที่แล้ว
Testing out a new to me circa 1800 Bohemian fiddle. First run through is right after I got it before a crack and open seam was closed up. Bridge was also just an i shaped blank. Second take is after crack and seam repair complete and with bridge properly shaped. Same strings, bow and recording set up.

Whiskey You’re the Devil… Practicing and Adding Ornaments
มุมมอง 902 ปีที่แล้ว
Decided to record some practice of myself figuring out what ornaments to add where in the hornpipe Whiskey You’re the Devil. I do this two ways normally: this way of running the tune and just trying things; the other way is playing along to recordings over and over and letting my fingers just start doing what they want.
Frank’s Reel -Adult Beginning Fiddler

This fiddle is Miss Opal, an old beautiful gypsy fiddle. I’m still getting to know her and where her notes sit, so don’t judge the flat notes… those are where the notes sit on my other fiddle, lol.
The Apple Blossom Slide
มุมมอง 2582 ปีที่แล้ว
Fiddling Friday! Today is just a wonderful simple little tune, the Apple Blossom Slide, also known as the Bedford Cross Slide, among others (check out the session.org for more info). I would totally recommend this tune for beginners that want to noodle around with ornamentation and not have to worry about memorizing a more complicated tune. This one gives you lots of freedom. I dug up one of these pipes and went down a rabbit hole learning about the history, I live in America, So, imagine how far that Irish immigrant traveled with the thing. Pretty Cool!
Very inspiring!
❤❤ you play beautifully with a beautiful song
Thank you!
awesome !!!
Thank you!
Did you get lessons? Seems like you learned super fast!
I did off and on 😀
this is awesome !!! well done !!
Thank you 😊
Girl you have made it ... Very Nice playing ❤ ... Looking Great with the new Dress ❤
Thank you!!
Very nice! Bonny tune, well played, thanks for sharing that one !
Thanks! I love playing the slow tempo sappy version, but it also takes on a new life sped up a bit, both are fun versions 😀
Wow that was great
Thank you!
Sounds good, Amanda!
Thank you!
sounds wonderful
Thank you!
Hi Mandy. Nice violin. It projects its sound more loudly after the repairs. regards, Phil
Thanks! It’s such a neat old fiddle, I’m so happy with it 😊
I love it!!
I love it!!
Very nice! Would you have the sheet music to share with me please?
💕💕💕🤠🤠 you play so amazing!!
I feel like something magical happened at 4 months! You seemed like you were smiling more and enjoying yourself and your playing really seemed to take off!😊Bravo from a violin teacher/fellow Star Wars nerd!
What's the song at 5:30?
Hi! That is Star of the County Down
Stop looking at your fingers. Looking at your fingers is not going to improve your intonation. Play with your eyes closed.
If you next note you play is a higher pitch, leave the previous finger down on the string. No charge!
Nice slides!!!!
Such a beautiful place ... Beautiful music, it has been a joy to watch and listen to you as you mature 💕
Thanks, Carl!
You have something of a lookalike on youtube. After I watched the following, the algorithm served me one of your videos: th-cam.com/video/QrmSEc_Sx5c/w-d-xo.html Best wishes.
Are you self-taught or do you have a private violin teacher? My guess is that you are self-taught.
I have done both over the years.
awesome awesome job
Thanks!
Always happy to hear you play!
Thanks! This tune is a 6 parter, lol, hopefully I’ll get it all down and recorded 😀
Just starting to work on December’s #fiddleclub tune, Old Grey Goose. This is just a super rough A part. I don’t always remember to record my first tries, but sometimes there’s a little ornament I try in my ambitious stupidity that I forget about later when I get more serious about getting the tune down. Embrace your ambitious stupidity, record your mistakes, share your authentic attempts and mediocrity, maybe you’ll inspire someone else. Life isn’t perfect, we aren’t perfect, learning an instrument is messy and ugly and horrible, but beautiful, fun and challenging. I’m all about sharing my messy learning, I’m just really bad about posting. Ps, my hands are pretty numb right now, so it is what it is, lol.
Awesome! You're doing so well! :)
This is awesome! Well done! Keep it up! :)
Great stuff! I'm 69 and decided to play my great grandfather s violin. I've played a few instruments but the violin is certainly the most challenging but I'm slowly getting there .But, what I really like is that it is great and logical to play tunes by ear.I don't use a shoulder rest so that's making vibrato slightly more difficult.
That’s awesome! It is a tricky instrument, but I think the challenge makes it fun. Some people use a sponge in place of a shoulder rest, maybe something low profile like that would help you while you learn vibrato, then you can go back to playing without?
Nice performance Mandy. It's been a while. Just popped in to see how you were doing and I was well rewarded. The 'Beginner' has retired and the 'Player' lives on. :-) regards, Phil
Thank you so much! I still feel like a beginner, haha.
@@TheFiddlingViolin I haven't played for over two years due to working away from home. I'm back into it again and I'm suffering. Cramp in the fingers and pains in the arm. It's always the same. Since I last visited, I notice a huge improvement in your playing. You can call yourself an 'Early year's player', coz you're no longer a beginner 🙂
@@philsskills As someone who deals with a ton of pain while playing, what helps my hands warm up faster is holding them under some warm running water for a bit, helps loosen them up. I’m always looking up different stretches to help my arms, but it’s usually nerve pain so not much helps. And thank you! It’s sometimes hard for me to hear improvement, unless I go and listen to my super early videos, haha.
@@TheFiddlingViolin Thanks for the info. I'll try it. I was using 'Deep Heat' from a tube.
@@philsskills My old fiddle teacher said her doctor recommended going back and forth between a hot tub of water and a lukewarm tub to help her hands. So she would do that while washing the dishes, fill each side of the sink the different temps to kill two birds with one stone, lol.
I saw your 1 year progress video and then clicked your profile… it’s fantastic to see that you are still playing violin. You are so inspiring ❤
Thank you!
Oh thank god it's 5 years! Haha! When you said beginner I thought you meant like me (5 months) and I was about to make a bonfire.... This is lovely!
Thank you! Haha, yeah I tend to keep the “beginner” tag so people don’t stumble onto my videos and expect perfection, haha. I can’t promise that you won’t have some desires to start a bonfire with your fiddle on your journey, but overall it’s fun!
great, would mind sharing your practice routine? How long did you practice? I want to share it with my students. Keep it up!
Hi! Sure! During that first year, it depended on the day, anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. I tried to practice every day, but usually there was a day that would get missed. I didn’t buckle down on scales and etudes until closer to my second year; first year was all about learning what was needed for each tune.
HI! Can you please tell me how often you get classes and how long you practice every day? thank you!!
Hi! I started lessons about 3 weeks into playing, and at that time took weekly 30 minute lessons, and practiced every day for about an hour. After 2 years I had a nerve injury and took a year off, then returned to every other week lessons, and practiced mostly every day. Currently I haven't had lessons in over a year, and try to practice every day and find online workshops to join and videos to learn new tricks from :)
@@TheFiddlingViolin Thank you so much for sharing that!!
awesome ( I just bought a violin and I'm trying to self-learn as well you inspired me to work hard and just keep going)
Definitely keep going! So many good resources out there for self learners.
Great Sound, Great Job ...
Thank you!
Beautiful mixing one of my favorite ways to play an instrument with one of my favorite songs
Ment to be a comma after beautiful sorry
@@Kjbreadinkjv thank you ☺
Excellent, glad to see you're back! Next time a little slower showing the back of that lovely new fiddle.
Thank you! And will do, I wanted to record outside, but the sun was too harsh. I might do another later today 😀
What violin you played?
Hi! In this video it is mostly a Ming Jiang Zhu 905.
hi, anyone tell me the name of the tune at 2:45 please?
Hi! That is Harvest Home.
@@TheFiddlingViolin many thanks!
Awesome :) Picking up my first fiddle later this week at 42 years old. Always wanted to play. Thanks for sharing your journey!
That’s great!!! It’s a challenging but rewarding journey! Enjoy!
Very inspiring!! Well Done!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think you showed excellent skills in your video editing. Perhaps nitpickers could point out flaws, but for those of us watching the overall performance and relating to the use of the Traveler, it was practically perfect! Thank you!
Thank you! I was very inexperienced at this time, but it was fun to play at 😄
Wow, what a great event. As a new player (6 months and counting) and a member. since just before getting my viola, of the fiddlerman forum, it is wonderful to see the Traveler in action with such talent, thanks for sharing! (signed JohnG).
Hi!! They were as excited to play it as I was to watch them play, lol. They loved the story and being part of its journey, which was so cool.
Love it ... Good to hear from you 😋
Thank you! I need to dust off this channel and post more 😀
@@TheFiddlingViolin ... Have you learned Aschocan Farewell ... Was one of my favorite that I played
@@carlboehm3858 I did, I recorded a snippet for a similar style video a few years back. I’d like to record it again, though.
@@TheFiddlingViolin Thanks Mandy ... I found it, that is a nice video. A longer version would be wonderful and appreciated 😚
