good interview. i don't use any japanese hand-tools (yet) but have been watching the Kanna videos here. interestingly, the owner of Suzuki tools is a neighbor of a friend in Berkeley, CA. I have met her a few times off San Pablo Ave...I have made 5-6 wooden handplanes and use my wooden shooter for veneer work. Visiting Japan is on my list as well in next few years..thx for sharing the video
I really enjoyed this series. Thanks for taking the time to post.
Philip goes into great detail when explaining each piece and the logic of each step. Thanks for making these videos available.
I could listen to this all day so i think i will
Fantastic interview! Really appreciate both Mr. Hunter, and the Austin School to have taken the time.
If you want to make furniture don’t start making furniture!
Sweet. I need to try and build one
Im Team Andrew Hunter
Your title can't be any more true! Andrew does not like to answer DM messages Instagram either. He is a one way individual. Seems like he does not want to interface with anybody less than $ to be made for he can promote himself.
Dawg, calm down and get over yourself. You're acting like an entitled, passive-aggressive baby. Not getting your way isn't a justification for making false accusations against someone. You clearly didn't pay attention to the interview either. Next time, before you start throwing a temper tantrum on the Internet, take the time to actually watch the interview and think about how reasonable your expectations are. Also, assuming Andrew even saw your message, I don't blame him at all if he chose to ignore it. He's under absolutely no obligation to share anything with some random entitled ahole that expects him to bend over backwards for absolutely no recompense.
But then again here is giving of himself freely
Nice cabinet!
A little bit of beeswax will get that sliding with ease

Giving finishing advice is really hard. I've settled on spraying pre-cat lacquer and that's pretty much the only finish I use. So when someone asks me for finishing advice starting with "first buy a $2000 HVLP and have a dedicated spray booth" tends to lose them 😅 Looking forward to this year's festival!
I have to agree with Andrew on hand grinding and polishing! It is a very pleasurable activity!. When you sharpen by hand and, and if you listen, feel and observe what's happening as you sharpen, it's amazing how it communicates back to you! This is unlike using power grinders and polishing wheels, which it's hard to feel the feel back! I'm so impressed with the (Japanese hand tools) over the Western planes' value for the money it's hard to believe. But there are many newauance that must be learned to make this happen, but it's not hard to learn. Just your willingness to learn. Columbus Michigan
Another good episode. You got me with "Mikey Pekovich"
Love Matt Kenney. One of a kind guy…not counting his exact replica sitting three feet away from him. One of a kind for sure.
My audio podcast app of choice (Overcast) is not finding the podcast.
Good suggestion. Ill have to add it to that one as well.
I know this is probably a stupid question but I've always been curious. can you plane with something like that on that really hard African Ironwood
I have not used ironwood before but Im assuming its pretty hard? As long as the plane iron is sharp you could plane it but if you want long showy shavings its common to use a softwood.
Japanese hand planes are designed to plane softwood, the cutting edge sits at approx. 38 degrees, according to a book called Discovering Japanese handplanes, if you deal with harder wood, raise the bed angle of the blade up to 45 or more, even 52, 55 degrees. That’d do i guess.
How much?

Really interested in this course! Does GI bill or any veterans education benefits cover the tuition at ASFD?
We are not currently approved to accept the GI bill unfortunately.
@@austinschooloffurniture okay, still looks like an awesome program.
A small part of me wishes that life circumstances hadn't required me to give up my spot in Austin. I'm doing what I need to do, so that's ok. But really hoping I can make it next year. Looks like you guys are doing great work!
We hope to see you next year as well!
