i kind of think the engine should have a tear down for the stoppage.
Thanks Patric, there are three reasons I chose not to go down that path: 1. The engine was at idle at the time of the prop strike, during landing. 2. The propeller was made from fibreglass and shattered. A metal prop would have shocked the crankshaft. 3. The gearbox has a built in clutch that would have absorbed any shock to the crankshaft.
Bravo, POC - living the true spirit of experimental aviation
Well, I suppose that's one way to get a new prop old boy.
Yep, it was a bit extreme but it worked. Good on yah Waz
El Kangurito 😂
I always do a 3 pointer; plopping her down. CAVU skies! I see you like your toys. Me too.
I usually do wheelies in taildraggers if possible. The new radial Renegade might have to be either three pointers or tail low wheelies. The prop clearance simply isn't sufficient.
Did you ever video the dissection of the Tempest filter? I'm curious of it's construction. Thanks!
I don't think I did. I know I didn't like it very much, it was a few dollars more expensive than a Rotax filter from Spruce.
@ A hard sell unless it provides some benefit besides a safety wire tab

Maybe it's because of my bouncy landings!
It's nice to see that you're back in Peru! It sounds like you'll be there through the holidays. I hope that you stay longer and make more videos. I'm sorry that you're selling your planes. I've been hoping to take one of my planes to Peru. I've been to Peru many times and have an apartment in Lima.
Hi Ken, I can recommend Santa Maria as a base to operate from. It cost me quite a bit to bring the Renegade here from Canada, it wasn't just the freight costs the government had their hand out for mo ey at every turn. What aircraft were you thinking of bringing to Peru? Maybe you can rent or join a syndicate here. I would really like to take the Renegade back to Australia but I'd probably have to pay the same or more to take it back out of Peru.
I really don't want to make travel videos in Peru. I'm not here on holidays so I won't be visiting any of the typical tourist attractions. I feel the day to day stuff is a bit boring for, mostly aviation types.
It would be interesting if you would talk about Peru, economy, people, food while you are out and about travelling or flying. Doesnt seem to be many trees where you are at…
Thanks Nadeth, I've been doing that type of commentary for my friends at my home airport. It's going to be a bit difficult to make it presentable for TH-cam. I came to Peru to sell two of my aeroplanes before getting back to Australia to concentrate on my Australian aeroplanes. Yes, the coastal strip of Peru has very little rainfall, as a matter of fact in the north of Chile there are places that have NEVER recorded rainfall! Peru isn't quite that bad but as an example for the first 5 years I was here I never had to use the windscreen wipers on anything above intermittent! Let me see what I can do
impressive! either for machines and humans to adapt to those heights
Really make you appreciate what your lungs are for!
How do you like that Rotec so far?
I'm pretty happy to have the Rotec. It looks the part on the aeroplane and it certainly looks better than the Verner. The Verner is about $4k more expensive but on the plus side the Verner is 14kg lighter, it doesn't use a reduction gearbox like the Rotec. Of course my Rotec hasn't fired a shot in anger yet, hopefully that won't be too far away.
I’ve just now found your site. Looks like a great project. What kind of resin did you use for your cowl? I’ve recently completed a Hatz Classic with an R3600 and constructed a similar boot cowl as you. Mine does not come as close to the exhaust collector ring as yours does tho. I used a high heat resin that is good to 250F and have had no trouble with heat coming off the collector ring so far after several test flights.
Welcome, I hope I can keep you interested although I suspect I'd be more likely to learn from you rather than the other way around. The cowl was made using slow cure epoxy reson. To be honest I don't expect any issues at all with heat on the cowel. The stainless steel heatshield is about 95% decorative and 5% functional. You just can't see the finished aircraft like I can. If I can keep the heatshied from tarnishing it should really make the whole engine area pop. Do you have any pics you'd like to share of your project? You can email me on st2george@gmail.com if you'd like to share. I'm located about 450km inland from Sydney Australia.
Safe travels on your trip.
Why a Rotec. Surely you know the history of this manufacturer.
Check the gaps in the valve springs between the coils, the Rotecs Achilles heel is binding of the valve spring.
The only two practical choices I had were the Verner and the Rotec. The Verner is lighter, mostly since it doesn't have a reduction gearbox. The Verner is way less attractive, not that it matters too much. Lastly the Verner is around $4k more expensive here in Australia. Given my time over I'd probably make the same decision. Let's see what pans out over the next couple of years.
I've heard that one of the problems was weak pushrods but if you're saying the problem is more valve spring coil binding. Wouldn't that problem show itself from day one? You don't think it would be more caused by over reving? Thanks for the heads-up, I'll bring hyper alert to valve/pushrod issues.
Great! Hurry up my friend! Canˋt wait to see your baby up in the air with that great engine!!! I am happy for you as well. Be aware of the tanks. Mine are leaking… CU up in the sky soon.😅
I'm going as fast as I can. You're 100% correct about the fuel tanks. It'll be an absolute miracle if they don't leak, even though I thoroughly cleaned all the components of the tank, including a final wash with acetone, even the rivets. Some of the gaps between the components were a tall order to ask the proseal to bridge. Where possible I reduced the gaps with metal pieces then prosealed but, like I say, if they DON'T leak it'll be a miricle. Thanks for watching, if you want to see anything specific just let me know and I'll do my best to show whatever it is.
Looking good POC! The paint turned out very well
Yes, I'm happy with the white primer. Pretty much all of the metal parts are primed now.

Thanks Dom, it's moving along. I'm finally finished the cowl. Now I just have to paint it.
What doesn’t get done today in Temora can always wait ‘til t’morra 😉

very cool!
what your doing is amazing!
Thanks, for me it’s fun.
You should have used bias ply tapes. glue tha straight edge and let it dry then pull the tape in the middle around the curve and it pulls the wrinkles out . Then glue it down!
Thanks, I'll give it a go on the fin in a few weeks.
Can't wait to see this fly. Best luck and cheers from California!
Me too, it's been a long time coming. I've had the kit for about 15 years but I was working outside of Australia for most of that time so progress was slow to nonexistent. I'm into it now that I'm retired. I really want it flying by the end of our summer, it's the beginning of spring right now!
I had to cut my own 3” tape on the “bias” to get it to lay properly between my fuselage’s spine and V-stab. One 300mm section required 3 attempts and 7h of work to get one that looked good.
I can believe that. I have some 3" bias tape, it will certainly go around curves really well but it has its own problems too. Good call though, I'll give it a try on the VS.
amazing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Really cool Paul!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Paul….two questions. Did you consider a Werner radial?….What model Rotax id in -4057?
No, I didn't consider the Verner until fairly recently, after I'd bought and paid for the Rotec. The Verner is lighter since it doesn't have a reduction gearbox. On the negative the Verner isn't as attractive as the rotec and in Australia the Verner is about $4k more expensive. If I were to make the same decision today I'd still choose the Rotec. Good question though, ask me again in a couple of years I might have a different answer but I hope not.

Thanks for the update Paul. I haven't checked in for a while and can see you've been busy! Looking good. Whats the issue with the Renegade?
Yes, progressing along. I haven’t identified exactly what the root cause of the problem is with the Renegade is suffice to say that something came adrift in the alternator area, damaged some of the rotating parts and I assume would have damaged the stator as well so I bought another seized engine for spare parts. I’ll get on to it pretty soon as the open cockpit flying days are getting closer every day. Thanks for watching.
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
Hi Paul, great video 😃
Thanks for your kind words Olga. I just wish I could make good videos.
Thx for u exp
You're very welcome. Just let me know if you want to see anything in particular
Hope you have good luck with your Rotec! Have you ran it much?
Not at all, it's brand new
Rotec out of the box leaking! Lol
Hello Paul, Many many thanks for this video. I'll follow it to replace the bungee of my Renegade. I'll keep you updated. 👍 Regards, Jean-Francois.
You're welcome, just be very careful working around tensioned bungees, they store a serious amount of energy.
quite fun task to do, working position and effort 😅 either go to gym or install bungees 💪 thank you for the videos 🙏🙏👍👍
Get rid of that glass fuel filter if you want to live. I had one on my VW and the threads stripped and it almost fell apart
I agree, that would be bad.
WAAAW GOOD I LOVE... THANKS.GOD BLESS YOU...
I'm glad you like it

Many thanks!
That method for deburring inside holes is genius! Simple but very effective
I wish I could claim it as my own but I must have seen it somewhere.

Just go with it. Uhh you can remove the lumpy bits by using a gum eraser to get them off. That system is really easy.
Thanks for that. I think my foam brush was falling to bits. Once I changed that and mixed up some new Ekobond, no more lumpy bits.
beautiful flying!! 👏👌
Thanks Pedro, I was just having some fun.
Why not put the join at the trailing edge just asking
You need to have two joins, one at the leading edge, the other at the trailing edge. On a small component like an aileron for instance you could wrap the fabric all the way around and put the joins at the T.E. but it isn’t quite as easy as it sounds.
Eh. Ah. Ehm. Ahm. Ahm. Eh. This is so hard. Does he live in Ah Mahn?
I have to agree with you, it’s difficult to listen to. I’ll try to improve but don’t hold your breath.
Is be your 3rd Renegade build?
No, I didn't build the other two. I bought them already in flying condition.
great video 👏👏👏 thank you for the sharing and patience :)
Thanks for watching! Pedro, I’ll keep making them if you keep watching them
Loved it, thanks for taking us along, I'm not far from Temora myself so it was interesting looking at familiar country. Love to see more and would of happily jumped in that spare seat.
Thanks for the feedback, I can never be too sure if the audience likes my videos or not. I’ll keep making videos and assume that most people like them. If you find yourself near Temora look me up, maybe we can go for a fly.
beautiful stearman :) also quite beautiful Fisher :) 🔝🔝
They sure were. Derek has two Fishers, both are equally nice. He travels lots so he's definitely the person to listen to regarding all things biplane.
Is the Rotec mounted directly on center? I always thought that the engine had to be 3 degree off center due to the direction of prop turning/thrust???
To be honest, I really don't know for sure but it won't matter for what I'm trying to do with the cowls. Some designers choose to canter the engine centerline off a few degrees but Murphy chose to move the leading edge of the fin off to one side, depending on the rotation of the engine. I don't remember the exact measurement but it was something like 1/2". My RV6 has the fin on the centerline and the engine a few degrees off like you say but you wouldn't want both methods of correction on the same aeroplane.
Love your homemade wheel chocks!!! Is the front wheel widths the same for the 582 and the Rotec?? It looks like the Rotec Spirit wheel stance is wider than your older 582 Renegade 2.
That’s right, the wheel track is not the same. The 582 is 58” and the Rotec is 68”. The Rotec Renegade required much longer undercarriage legs and also much heavier. The extra length is required since the Rotec swings a much larger prop. Even with the longer undercarriage, the prop clearance is barely sufficient.
