Takashi Arai is a Kawasaki / Berlin based visual artist and filmmaker.
To trace photography to its origins, Arai encountered daguerreotype, and after much trial and error, mastered the complex technique. Arai does not see daguerreotype as a nostalgic reproduction of a classical method. Instead, he has made it his medium, finding it a reliable device for storing memory that is far better for recording and transmitting interactions with his subjects than modern photography.
Since the beginning in 2010, when he first became interested in nuclear issues, Arai has used the daguerreotype technique to create individual records-micro-monuments- touch upon the fragmented reality of events in the past. His encounters with surviving crew members, and the salvaged hull, of the fallout-contaminated Daigo Fukuryūmaru fishing boat, led him to photograph the deeply interconnected subjects of Fukushima, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

1 Day / 1 Daguerreotype / 1 Min Film by Takashi Arai
This 1 min. video shows how Takashi Arai creates a daguerreotype for his project "Anti-monuments for 100,000 Years" in the forest of Olkiluoto, Finland, where the world's only final nuclear waste repository site is situated.
Daguerreotypy is an irreproducible, low-light-sensitive, and labor-intensive process. However, the image on a bright mirror surface of a silver plate is sharp and exceptionally detailed with nanoscopic particles. People who first and suddenly encountered those magical non-human images in 19c called daguerreotypes "mirrors with memory."
"In order to commune with the ancient past and the future 100,000 years from now, we have no choice but to imagine, but we cannot begin that journey unless we break the shell of our imagination. Seeing/photographing with daguerreotypes, and giving our hearing over to ambient sounds surrounding us, helps to transform our consciousness." -Takashi Arai

More people have stood on the summit of Everest than have made a daguerreotype. Bravo!👏
Thank you ❤🔥
I’d love to learn from you are you in Tokyo ?
I'm in Berlin and planning to start a regular workshop later this year or early 2025 :) Please follow my Instagram to check the latest events/exhibitions/workshops instagram.com/takashiarai_studio/
It's amazing to see your process done in a "traditional" setting! I already thought your tools were unique and had a Japanese flair that made them super cool, but now seeing this character doing it in traditional Japanese dress and style is awesome! He is the most stylish Japanese photographer!!
This is very interesting. How do you handle mercury fume toxicity? Is the mercury box sealed enough?
This mercury box has no leak, but I use a gas mask with a mercury filter or laboratory fume box at my studio just in case.
It was a pleasure watching your video! So beautiful 😍
This was a pleasure for my eyes and ears! Thank you for creating this video!!
Daguerre can make landscape photo? Or only Potrait ? By the way, do you have Instagram? Can i ask you about this? Thank you
Yes! @takashiarai_studio
Very well done! At first I wasn't sure how simple subject was going to turn out, then I saw your final image, it worked very well. Very nice photo and the subject was perfect.
Simply wonderful. A beautiful reverence of a magical process.
Thank you!! photography and ghost story have a sort of affinity I feel
Sempre.
Oh thank you so much for your comment!! I'll try be more active to repay you for your patience :)
Thx for answering that quickly. You mention that using red light gives the plate more speed. I suppose that the red ochtend is then only active during first sensitief with iodine .. thx again for your first answer … grtz
I see that the red light in your darkroom is always acrive during sensitising and developping? Is their no risk for veiling ? Thx and have fun
Back in 2020, there was no affordable video camera to film in a very dark environment. It was just for filming, and I don't usually use red light during sensitizing because you need to check a subtle change of color on the silver surface. Applying red light intentionally on dag plate makes exposure time shorter, FYI.

Luckily after 11 years anyone in 2021
Des sous-titres en français ce serait super.
Sugoi-des!
Its hard seeing the picture, its so dark.
I want learning to do this process, do you have any practical guidance? an article or such things it..
Really amazing ! That's when you realize what was the meaning of taking a picture back in the 19th century. Anyway, excellent job man !
Inspirational, excellent work. Your dedication is incredible! I have just got my first wet plate camera for tintype and ambrotype and also plan to explore this side of photography. Well done my friend!
Looks like a lot of work
@Jesslayc Tintypes and Ambrotypes (also called Wet Plate Collodion) were used more in the US during the war. The patent on Daguerrotypes was enforced pretty severely so they cost too much. In addition Tintypes and Ambrotypes are much easier and don't involve mercury fumes. There's plenty of information the process if you just google around.
so i do civil war re-enacting and im into photography and i do 1850s and i heard the daguerrotype is perios to that time, i want to make one but with the inside empty so i can put my camera in there and take pictures and look period, do u know where i might find instructions for that?
excellent
Thank you for this video. I will be using it to demonstrate the process in a Masters class paper that I am writing. Excellent work!
Thats alot of work for one photo
Me ayudo mucho a entender el proceso del daguerrotipo :) Muchas gracias por este video.
OMG, this is something else! Extremely nice work (Poland)
What a wonderful work!
Absolutely wonderful!
