I love the part about the lack of narrative coherence in modern architecture. I don't hate modern architecture i think it was necessary for its time. How to make buildings quick, efficient, functional with minimal cost in a time of overly frivolous buildings. That's not so bad, but I believe as humans develop our needs change and its just time to fill in those gaps. Lovely session👏👏

The use of the term holistic is highly appropriate in what you called alternative medicine or what I’d call medicine. Ask your PCP how much training they had on nutrition, how successful they are are healing/reversing chronic disease, or questions like which minerals provide an anti histaminergic effect. Regular doctors are uneducated and that is why they graduate to “holistic” doctors when they are educated and able to provide care to the whole patient including these gaps in their education. Noob question. Are the books you mention in this series just for pure architects or architect students or is it also for someone who isn't an architect, but always was fascinated by architecture? Would like to apply the knowledge in a different field like in in game design.

These concepts are dismissed because the Overton window hasn’t shifted yet. It has nothing to do with how rigorous your research is: the people with “authority” in your field want ugly architecture.

The brilliant Ann Sussman explains the biological and evolutionary basis of architecture. Those who listen to this magnificent talk should ask why architectural education and global practice continue to ignore Sussman's pioneering discoveries. Sussman deserves a Nobel Prize!

28:00 I remember one of the biggest issues in undergrad was, it was meant to be a time of learning and discussion but when it came to the final crit, even though you were told it’s a discussion you would find yourself irritating the lectures if you didn’t simply agree. I think it’s a product of time constraint (you’re not the only student so you can’t debate for hours), also perhaps a perceived defensiveness but sometimes you didn’t want to be the type of architect they were encouraging you to be. But sometimes you were wrong, hard to know what to take on and what to reject when you’re looking from the bottom up 😄 Thankfully post-grad was much more of a discussion. And there was basically only constructive criticism.

He's full of words that don't mean much. I saw a lecture where Zaha, Foster and this guy were in, somewhere in Spain. Zaha and Foster were of course razor sharp in their ideas. This guy spoke from time to time and you literally fell sleep instantly. Doesn't really say anything meaningful!....annoyingly people like this that can talk confusingly can get to the top, architecture is full of these tools. I would hate it if I had to attend his lectures. Theorists that don't do much. I listened to about 20 % of this whilst at work (architect) ,.... switching off before I need to slap myself awake. Watch one of Fosters, or Renzo Piano videos (proper architects) as an antidote to this nonsense, and you will actually learn something.

He is getting to emergent properties of urban design from a very difficult, obtuse angle. Architects need to learn more about the concept of emergent properties. Cities will surpass the beauty of any city we have today.

A marketing strategy for an architectural style by claiming that the style represents an almost scientific discipline. In fact, the organic masses style (which is what it is after all the jargon is removed) may lend itself to some unique functionality when a patron wants to advertise his building with a dominant, unusual look, and is willing to pay the astronomical cost for it. There are very few successful examples that are highly artistic and people respond positively to them. However, at most, any integrated urban fabric of any city will not comfortably accommodate more than one building of this style. In addition, this style quickly loses its lustre with repetition, especially when it is crammed into an urban environment without any justification, and what is worse is when it is practice without any artistic sense.
