An incalculable loss!!
Yeah, Rowland's good; I have the Varese version. 'Phar Lap' and 'Lightning Jack' are recommended too.
Great video Robert, my sister emigrated to Australia back in 2011 so, you reminded me of her and the kids!! Great music on this, thks!!
It is exciting to find an Intrada in the wild. I'll loved spotting Intrada's release of "The Conversation" in a Soho record shop in the 1990s.. In the glory days of HMV and Tower Records, I found the Intrada expansion (the original expansion) of "The Last Starfighter" in one of them.
"Stanley & Iris" was the first John Williams soundtrack to be a Varese Sarabande premiere release along with the movie...
Great video Robert a few titles I will chk out, I hv some of them. Nxt time you go shopping gimme a shout haha!!!! James.
Congrates Roberts great videos, well deserved!! I would like to put the Doctor Who video, with your permission, on my channel with the relevant links back your channel of course. Best wishes James.
Well done. Fully on board with championing more obscure and unusual scores.
I used to sometimes find nice surprises of soundtracks in charity shops, but soooo much less these days. It's like they're stocking less and less music of any genre. But whenever I take a trip to a different town/city, I keep an eye out just on the off-chance. You got some good stuff there though ... seems to be quite a lot of British stuff - Fenton, Lock, Nyman, Hartley... "This is 'The Lover', by _miaow_." 😂
You know now that you mention it there is a lot of British stuff. I never considered that before.
The op shops near me have dried up too. Finding a soundtrack that isn't Titanic is a rarity.
I will never forget the first time I saw this film a few years ago. I was literally and figuratively, breathless! And I also remember explicitly how well the music complimented the film. Thank you so much for doing this.
Hard to get used to that new name Mix 98.5! Glad the TH-cam is working out! I can't get 100 views after two days.
You are welcome! And it has been easy to watch because they have been enjoyable. And even though I have not watched all of them yet, they are on my watch later list. Been really hectic of late. Thank you for sharing your immense knowledge with us so that we can expand our knowledge of film music.
Stanley & Iris is an underrated 5-star masterpiece. Those first three cues are some of the best melody writing the man has ever done! Superb score that, you're right, not to many people know of!
Rob, you're firing up my memories of being a budding film music fanatic in the 90s. I adored Isham's A River Runs Through It, but haven't heard it in years, but that melody brought it all back. Also nice to hear some love for Patrick Doyle. I saw Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing ten times at the cinema in 1994, pretty much entirely for the bravura sequences highlighting Doyle's rapturous score.
Good video. I was fortunate to see this film on the big screen. What memories! Thank you for the insight on the composer.
I do like a bit of Who, but I'm more of a keen casual viewer and not part of hardcore fandom. These days I'm often more enthused by the prospect of what it could be than the execution of what it actually turns out to be. When it's good, it's fabulous (and yeah, that episode was a cracker), but when it's bad, it's terrible. There's a lot of terrible recently 😕 What I want is for them to get proper witty SF writers on board to write proper witty grown-up-but-accessible-to-all SF. 🤷♂
Fenton's great; I've got both Valiant and Memphis Belle on CD. My first introduction to him was The Company of Wolves, back in the day.
It's worth having a look through George Fenton's filmography, which I just did, prompted by this video. Many gems to rediscover. I always loved The Grand Central Waltz from The Fisher King. And this week I finally bought The Company of Wolves on CD. His music has been more indelible than I thought.
"Final Analysis" is bombastic fun.
Definitely gonna get this cd, always been aware of George Fenton with his nature music on the BBC. I thk he did Ghandi if memory serves me right? Thks, James
Yep, he did "Groundhog Day".
Agreed, this is a top episode of Who!
Everyday a school day thks for posting!!
I have not seen or even heard of this movie! Although I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your clips. Am I not mistaken in saying that George Fenton was the gentleman who did the score for Memphis Belle?
Funny you should mention that...
Hi Rob. Just wanted to say thank you for such a lovely review of my score!
Great music is great music which made the score easy to review.
57 and counting 🎉 The TH-cam soundtrack community keeps on growing. Great to be part of it. From subscriber no 52 😉
Good on ya, Rob. Keep it up!
Subbed !
The same. Have not seen that version of Loderunner before.
Congrats, Rob! On to 100!!!
I regret not going to that Bernstein concert.
The more the merrier. I hope these longer chats become a fixture of your channel, Rob. This kind of film music banter is gold.
I sing ROBOTJOX instead of REX STEELE! LOL! Ugh! Anyway, thanks for the invite, Rob! Can't wait to do it again!
Are you going to join Bluesky?
What's Bluesky?
I have just joined Bluesky. @visionsinsound.bsky.social
Harnell's voice gives Elmer Bernstein.
Facinatng. Thanks for sharing. I expectly love Harnell's humble response to being invited on the show!
"Valiant" isn't on Disney + internationally, because Disney released it in North America, here in the UK (it's an Ealing Studios copro with Vanguard Animation) it has no Disney links.
That's too bad. It is worth checking out.
This music sort of sounded like Hans wrote it for his group in the 80s The Boggles. I wasn’t overly crazy about it, but there were a couple of good pieces, Henry vs Henry and I Don’t Like Eggs!
I miss this Zimmer. This was a replacement score when Georges Delerue's score was rejected.
I already prefer this to Paul Simon's "One-Trick Pony".
Interesting ... I wasn't familiar with that _at all_!
Yeah, I too thought it was a shame it didn't take off into a series, as I really liked it. Agreed that Shearmur hasn't had the runaway career he should have. Alongside this I really enjoy Reign of Fire and The Count of Monte Cristo.
Agree to disagree on the Jane Monheit song. I hated it in I went to see the movie, and I didn't like it on the album. Agreed that Shearmur should've been bigger. But knowing the loss he suffered I can understand his pulling back.
While the main theme is bloody brilliant, I think the Ron Goodwin inspired "Frankie's Theme" as heard in cues such as "Finding Frankie" and "Manta Sqaudron," might be the best theme from the entire score! IMO, this is one of the great scores of the 21st century and Edward Shearumur SHOULD be among the A-list composers working in Hollywood today!
Too bad there's no Canadian version of "Television's Greatest Hits".
You're right, that is a shame. I know so many that would go into that compilation.
GNP Crescendo was also the very first label to release "Star Trek" soundtracks.
Yep, I have a few of those.
So did he only go to the police academy at NIGHT?
Yes, he would only work at night. His "coffin" was the trunk of his car.
It's a real treat to hear Rob and Erik talk soundtracks at length. Hope you can do more of these extended conversations on specific topics.
The remastered THING is incredible, my fave Morricone score. Moody and he managed to evoke Bartok principles without being pastiche.
7even is a masterpiece but I’d take The Fly for Shore in terms of music listening.
Another corker, Rob. I've always liked Season of the Witch more than the other Halloweens, both the movie and the soundtrack.
Happy Halloween Rob!
