Tesla AI Can Navigate Downtown Streets? Real World Test Drive
Join us as we test Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) through the bustling streets of Toronto! In this drive, FSD navigates complex urban scenarios, including left turns, merging traffic, cyclists and pedestrian crossings. You'll see smooth lane changes, courteous interactions with other drivers, and a few disengagements, such as an expired protected left turn. Watch how FSD handles narrow roads, heavy pedestrian traffic, and tight intersections with both caution and confidence.

    0:50 FSD still cannot consistenly handle speed bumps. In November of 2024! 2:28 FSD slows down for the van on the left. This is *unnecessary* 3:10 FSD screws up in very easy city traffic. (ok that's enough) Sigh...FSD is no better than 3 months ago. Still cannot be trusted. Still requires *100* *percent* human supervision at all times. Some people paid 12k or 15k USD for this buggy Level 2 assistant. So sad .

    From my understanding on how the self driving works, it’s a generative learning so the more times you drive that road the more the car will realize that there’s a speed bump there and then the future will get better at avoiding and navigating those situations. I still hate electric cars, but I’m all for self driving

      Thanks for sharing your perspective! FSD is not particularly a generative model but a deep learning/neural network model (from the last AI day at least) also merges natural language understanding/processing concepts for lane recognition. What you may be referring to is the reinforcement learning human feedback (RLHF), regarding the speed bump example. Would love to hear your perspective about why you hate electric cars!

    We have the same FSD in Scarborough. It is wonky around pedestrians - skittish. FSD needs to use headlights to signal when letter pedestrians to cross. I'll X Ashok and see if they're thinking about this. Thanks!

    Thank you for your testing; really appreciate it! Gotta say, though, that I am not impressed with 12.4.3. You had at least 4 or 5 interventions where you needed to press the accelerator. That is not acceptable, in my opinion. I still have 12.3.6, and even though what it can do is quite impressive, what it doesn’t do correctly is disheartening. I sure hope that 12.4.5 is a game changer. If not, I will likely cancel my subscription to FSD (at least until it learns how to drive :-)

Today, FSD is a simpleminded Level 2 assistant that makes frequent mistakes on any challenging route. A human driver is light-years more proficient than the buggy beta FSD software .

  • @charliedoyle7824
    @charliedoyle7824 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Expecting huge improvements to FSD, because Elon says it's happening, is quite naive. The whole FSD program for years has been a lot of hype from the top, and too many fanboys trying hard to believe, despite the lack of evidence . Waymo can do over 60,000 safe driverless city robotaxi trips per week, and they still are a few years away from a full scale up, because a huge fleet putting up millions of miles a day has to be super-duper safe above average human levels, able to handle every possible scenario safely. Meanwhile, FSD can do maybe one or two trips in a row, in easy conditions, with no interventions. FSD will be to first base, with still a long way to go, when it can go a full year in one car with no safety interventions, in busy city driving. Waymo was better than that in about 2018, when they started going driverless testing in Chandler AZ and before they updated the sensors from gen-4 to gen-5. They'll be scaling up in a few years with gen-6 sensors. Expecting 5x improvements every update, because Elon flaps his jaw about it, is soooo dumb! There is zero chance FSD will reach robotaxi Level 5 ability with the current hardware. The maps aren't good enough, the cameras aren't placed correctly and there aren't enough of them, and it needs some way to see a few hundred meters ahead accurately. It's a pipe dream to think the AI will get so intelligent that it will overcome everything and become a magic super-human robotaxi. The current best Chat-GPT isn't even that good, and it is only dealing with text.

    • @DerekDavis213
      @DerekDavis213 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very well said! Every Tesla FSD fan should read that post very carefully, and realize that FSD is going nowhere. Level 5 Full Autonomy is years away at a minimum. And it will require new hardware, and a new software engineering team .

      This software is way more skittish around other vehicles and pedestrians than you think it is. If anything, it can be too reserved at times. I think it’s genuinely safer at detecting others around it and avoiding them better than most attentive drivers. It’s not perfect, but if you spent a little bit behind the wheel with it running you’d begin to see it has become pretty solid.

      @@Str8ABH _you’d begin to see it has become pretty solid._ Pretty solid means that it cannot be TRUSTED with your life. FSD continues to make mistakes on any challenging drive. Any high school kid is a much better driver.

    Please keep in mind that if a crash occurs, this person will break both of their legs. There is a high probability that the person will have their spine broken, which in consequence leads to permanent paralysis.

    The car would not budge! After looking at the footage in post, if you look closely, you can see that the car picks up a person standing in front of us, even though no one was there! Thoughts?
