In Cuba I learned to play the guiro pattern with alternating down- and upstrokes, starting with a downstroke. Only at the beginning of the three side of the clave my teacher told me to play two consecutive downstrokes. But, as with most afro cuban instruments, there are many different ways of interpreting a rhythm. Nevertheless a very helpful video for beginners.
