Getting a child with autism can bring even more challenges to the table. We enjoy eating together as a family when we get the opportunity. Having crazy careers that pull us in different directions, and a teenage son that plays sports bring a packed schedule.
As you will see any little thing can turn our daughter away from eating it. Her ASD sensory overload can pick up on the smallest speck out of place. Her bagel or even her grilled cheese must have the perfect amount of grill or toaster marks. If not, then she skips that meal and we try again in a few hours.
Autism awareness alert: we can't use traditional methods to get her to eat. From both of our families combined we have over 30 niece and nephews. Our siblings and many other family members have shared their success stories of getting picky eaters to cave in. Unfortunately they haven't broken the barrier for us utilizing those methods.
With our unique situation and learning to understand her thought process it's literally a daily battle. She can not and will not be forced, tricked, bribed, or any other form thought of to get her to eat. However, with all that being said we still welcome new and creative ideas to try the next time.
