The history of Shimla railway station includes its opening, rebuilding, and redevelopment:
Opening
The station opened in 1903. The original station building was made of wood with a sloping iron roof.
Rebuilding
In 1921, the station was rebuilt and extended to accommodate the growing traffic. The new building was made of brick masonry and included offices, waiting rooms, and a telegraph office.
Roof collapse
In 1944, the roof over the station building and platform collapsed due to heavy snowfall. A new roof was built to replace it.
Redevelopment
In 1986-87, the station was redeveloped to include platform shelters, a tourist information office, and a waiting hall. It also gained 10 new retiring rooms with large windows.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway, which connects Shimla to the northern plains, was built in 1898 and completed in 1903. The railway is known for its dramatic views of the hills and villages, and is often called the toy train line.
