Holmes "Watson this is no time for humbugs"
My grand children love this. 3 and 5 years old. Which episode is this?
I'm the fun one in the family. I happened to be raised by Vulcans.
Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes. No other need apply.
Brett & Burke ARE THE ONLY TRUE Holmes & Watson.!!!
With due expediency putting on the regency great 😅
As they pan through the reading room I swear one of those men looks just like Larry Tate from Bewitched!
Yep the guy in the big chair reading the paper at 3:07
Wonderfully cast series. Even Moriority is cast well. The one thing I hated about the Sherlock series is they tried to make the Professor instead of a menace and power behind the underworld. Into a Joker style villain which didn't work at all.
Great my favourite episode 🙂
I expect him to jump on the table and say "its just a jump to the left"
It's almost straight out of the novels: "he has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points" Oh and he doesn't just order the books: "The conclusions of every department are passed to him, and he is the central exchange, the clearinghouse, which makes out the balance. All other men are specialists, but his specialism is omniscience. We will suppose that a minister needs information as to a point which involves the Navy, India, Canada and the bimetallic question; he could get his separate advices from various departments upon each, but only Mycroft can focus them all, and say offhand how each factor would affect the other. They began by using him as a short-cut, a convenience; now he has made himself an essential. In that great brain of his everything is pigeon-holed and can be handed out in an instant."
I really do need to watch this version someday… somehow!
Absolute best depiction of Holmes in any film or TV adaption. I loved this series!!
Jeremy Brett is and always will be the best version of Sherlock Holmes.
such a brilliant scene
Oh, how I wish to be a member of The Diogenes Club.. It would be bliss.
I have never so desperately wanted to join a club such as this in my entire life. Can you just imagine the feeling of peace and quiet, away from...well, you know. Siiiiiigh.
AHH. He has his hat from Breamans of the strand, this shows he is a resident in the past of Ticonderoga.. But not within the last year, hence he moved to Knightsbridge as his shoes prove" "sir, he has a air of a man who bought the twain from eBay "
Mycroft: “it’s just a jump to left!”
Mycroft to a T.
This would be my kind of social club.
I bought the complete Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes box set over a decade ago, some of the best money I ever spent - The definitive Holmes and a man much missed. I also loved both versions of Watson in the series...and Mycroft was gold. The only down side is that in the latter episodes, you can see that Jeremy Brett's health is failing him. I refuse to watch any of the modern stuff, I know exactly what I will get and I can live without it.
I do love the full enjoyment of the situation that plays across Watson's face as he watches the two brothers speaking easily to each other, divining what others cannot.
Great role for Jack Hawkins.
My absolute favourite episode, The Second Stain. The story was brilliant, everyone acted it perfectly, and Holmes jumps in the air with joy at the end.😃👍
The best Sherlock and Mycroft ever put on film.
Charles Grey was splendid as Mycroft. I dont know how many times I’ve watched the Mazarin stone...
I remember laughing to myself when I first saw this scene
I love it how at first Mycroft is the one controlling the situation, but once it's determined they are going on a police raid, Sherlock and Watson are clearly in their element and Mycroft looks very uncomfortable!
The armchair comment is on point with today's social media.
Wait until you meet Mycroft's older brother: Cedrick - quite possible the greatest detective that ever lived but preferred to work as a stripper in Paris.
This is getting out of hand! Now there are TWO of them!
I absolutely adore Jeremy Brett.
Now THIS is MY Sherlock!
Best Sherlock. Worst Watson.
I have the DVD collection and I was rather fond of this episode. It is not completely felicitous with the original short story, but it works well in this format. I found the opening scenes quite delightful before it turned dark in the final act.
I can almost smell the pipe smoke at 1:28
My favourite version of Sherlock Holmes
The original Sheldon Cooper😂
A social club for the unsociable.
When I saw this in my You Tube list, I immediately thought of my late uncle. He often mentioned Mycroft to me, and it was my uncle who told me about Mycroft.
4:10 that moment when Mycroft scores the winning point against Sherlock. Its why i love his character so much!
Charles Dance would have made a pisser Sherlock.
Has abyonyone ever written a book about Sherlock and Mycrofts other brother, who is a complete buffoon. If not they shoould
That thumbnail made me do a double take
Why does Mycroft look old enough to be Sherlock's grandfather? And why is every version afraid to cast a fat actor, when the stories specifically say Mycroft is obese?
Good question. In the stories Mycroft is 7 years older than Sherlock. In reality Charles Gray was 5 years older than Jeremy Brett. Genetics perhaps? I mean they are about the same age difference as their characters. He is described by Doyle as being much larger and stouter than Sherlock, which you can see by the way Brett can virtually hide behind Gray (which happens just after this clip ends, of course). It isn't perfect, of course, because you want someone who can act the part, and Brett was rather tall himself at 6 ft 1. Besides it seems like their definition of portly and massive in the 1890s was much different than today's my 600 pound life version. Sidney Paget's drawings of Mycroft seem to show him as merely a large man, and Steele (the illustrator for Collier's) never draws him.
As a child I loved the Rathbone Holmes, then I read the Canon and was disappointed in the movies. After reading the Canon several times, I can only picture Jeremey Brett as Holmes in my minds eye.
My God.... how I miss Jeremy as Holmes!
Jeremy Brett is Holmes, the look, the mannerisms, the presence.
Sublime
Tbh i am literally Sherlock then (all the energy in the family) 😂
