@@1888. fair, I don’t live far from Ohtani’s home town, but people are surprised when I tell them that Americans can buy and make authentic Japanese food at their own homes pretty easily, or buy authentic Japanese ramen, sushi (though quality is sometimes questionable), and other dishes at restaurants pretty easily, especially if you’re in California.

i mean.... it's harder than it would be in japan. and probably a narrow range compared to all japanese food, like sushi yes but im sure there are random snacks that are hard to find (eg could you get tako senbei?)

Errr Japanese don’t eat as much sushi as people think. They eat it in rare occasion. Also a lot of the “sushi” in the states like special rolls don’t resemble anything like you find in Japan. Japanese don’t put cream cheese or avocado or random sauce on giantic size rolls. Lastly almost all the “Japanese” places are owned and run by Chinese or Koreans; in other words, there’s a lack of true authentic Japanses food

The reporter was asking this question on behalf of his fans back home who want to know more about living in America. when i lived in Japan, i would get a lot of these types of questions about america like "how are the japanese restaurants?" "does everybody drive?" and it was interesting because i had some friends who grew up in the south and those of us who grew up in the city had different answers and our japanese friends couldn't fathom how large the US is.

@@lordneversmile8105 idk why you are assuming that we like any of those cream cheese and Avacado options either. Anyone who wants to get world class Japanese cuisine can find it on either US Coast. Maybe in Montana or Nebraska it’s harder.

Even in Los Angeles Area, there's good Japanese food, but it'll be double the price of what something similar in Tokyo will cost you. Good katsu in Tokyo = 800 Yen, LA = $20 Yoshinoya Beef Bowl = 500 yen there, $8 here Sushi at Kura revolving sushi = 125 yen a plate there, $3.75 here

Exactly. I’d say Japanese food is one of the most popular international cuisines on the west coast. I’m able to get world class sushi or ramen with ingredients flew in from Japan here in NYC. I’m sure the multi millionaire athlete from Japan will be able to get whatever he wants in SoCal.
