Hello TH-cam! I am a jazz pianist from Seattle, Washington, USA where I perform regularly and operate a music school, Seattle Jazz Academy. I am excited to share videos with the world on this channel - it will be a mix of performance videos, short practice ideas, and maybe some longer video series on jazz piano education and ways to work through popular tunes and standards. There are so many channels out there for piano beginners and jazz beginners, the majority of the material I will post here will be for intermediate players and beyond. Sometimes we have trouble knowing what to practice when we sit down at the instrument for our daily practice session - I hope that this channel can be an answer to that problem. If you don't know what to practice, grab a video from our Short Practice Ideas playlist and work it out! Practice ideas will be posted on Sundays. If you would like to learn more about me please check out my website, www.mackgroutmusic.com - happy practicing!
Simple(r) Block Chords | Not Always Diminished Passing | Jazz Piano: Short Practice Ideas
This video is about using the first block chord system I learned when I was a kid growing up learning how to play - the minor two passing chord. This system stays diatonic and works great for beginners and intermediate students who are not quite feeling ready to dive into some of the more complex block chord systems such as the diminished passing chord / diminished 6th scale a la Barry Harris (one of my heroes).
This is not a perfect system, but it is meant to give students a block chord sound in a short amount of time over most common chords. It is meant to be played over the three basic chord types, major7, dominant7 and minor7 chords.

This is a quick video tutorial that will hopefully give you some great practice ideas. It sometimes takes a nudge to get into some new practice material - here is a concept passed along from Barry Harris about playing chords in one hand that are larger than an octave. Cheers! Unlock the Bass | Simple Powerful Reharmonization Strategy | Jazz Piano: Short Practice Ideas
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Often when we starting learning about reharmonization in the jazz piano world we jump into things such as tri-tone substitutions, adding bebop 2-5 progressions, modal interchange, all sorts of fancy tricks. Do not overlook the simple, classic concept of putting a different chord tone in the bass. Sometimes this can get a simple, clean sound - some may say even a little classical sounding. The t...

Join us this week in practicing 'The Grinder'. This exercise is great to start getting the feel of the harmony of a tune you want to improvise on. At first this exercise may seem straight forward and simple, but as you get to the fourth step and start trying to attack the different inversions you may feel like ripping your hair out! The reward is that on the other side of this drill, when you c...

Perfect,!
Thankxz!!
Thank you very much sir. Very informative. Apart from resolving to the F major, can i also resolve it to the F minor using (C7 + any 6 of the minor triads) let's say I'm playing a song in G major
Thank you very much sir. Very informative. When you resolved to the E major, 4:45, what theory was behind that or how were you thinking
That's sound is cool! It's like Maccoy Tyner! Thanks very much❤
Hi! I've been playing the piano for 13 years, but I never played jazz on the piano. When I started playing jazz, it was on woodwinds, so I never learnt to comp. This sounds like exactly the sort of practice I need, so thank you! However, I feel like it's still a bit too hard for me on most tunes. I tried it on All Blues and Autumn Leaves, and there I kinda just settled into certain shapes and inversions that I didn't switch around, and I didn't employ any sort of voice leading, so I was often jumping from place to place, just to get to the chord shape I had learnt. I tried it on Misty and In a Sentimental Mood, where I really struggled and almost never managed to hit the right chord. What I'm trying to ask is, do you have any tips for exercises for absolute beginners into comping? People who only ever knew the piano keyboard as something to memorise tunes set in stone on? Maybe exercises to learn to read chords? Anyway, thank you so much for this exercise!
Hey hey! I would say this is a relatively difficult way to comp compared to what we might call 'upper structure' style. Upper structure style we play a stock voicing (left hand rootless chord) and just try to play octaves in the right hand to start, then maybe octave spliced with a third down from the top, then maybe four stacks. I think that two handed comping is one of the more difficult things we do on the piano, especially at first when learning because most of the time we practice by ourselves. What I would do is make sure to just learn to spot these 2+2 voicings on any tune that you are working on and get fast at finding these. First big fundamental thing that I make all my jazz piano students do is memorize and master the rootless major 2-5's and 2-5-1's. Play the first chord as a rootless minor nine chord, then drop the 7th of the chord a half step to make the chord become a dominant 13 voicing for the five chord. We see lots of 2-5-1's, but more importantly when you practice all the 2-5-1's you are practicing each dominant, minor, and major chord! Whoa! Hope that helps, sorry I dont have the time to go into more detail! Cheers, Mack
@@mackgrout Thanks a lot! :D
that's great! thank you so much!
Glad you like it!
Very fine indeed!!!
Your short practice idea videos are real nuggets, Mack!! They are challenging but never overwhelming and fun too. Thanks for sharing!!! 🙏
My pleasure, glad you enjoy them!
Im so glad this video exist..fr thanks man !
Glad it helped!
Hey Mack. I've been teaching piano for 35 years. I always knew going thru diatonic chords worked . I'm familiar with Barry Harris transitions. I loved the way you spelled them out this way. I still find things in the major diatonic scales I hadn't noticed. Thanks! Bill
Thanks Bill! Yea this is how I learned it first. Best wishes.
Dude,,,,put some pants on ,smh automatic 👎 on general principle, geez ,pull it together, beta
Lol thanks for watching dude! 😂

This is a great technique. I’ve learned block chords using with the VI minor 7 chord as well as some other variations. This is a really easy and cogent way to play blocks. I almost always use my left hand thumb to double the right hand pinky. Reminds me of a big band saxophone section. Great video!!!
Glad it was helpful!
❤🎉🎉😊
As an intermediate-ish player this seemed quite hard to begin with. Breaking the chords down into their spelling helped me to work out what was being played. I guess the idea here is the basic chord sequence is just a stepping stone. i will be coming back to this video. Never thought of watching at half speed. It's gonna take some time to get even the basic chord sequence down. Thank you you for teaching this.
Just a question. When the Fm chord is played there is a D note at the bottom, so should this not be Fm/D rather than Fm/C or is it an Fm6? Thanks
Actually really useful nice !
Glad you think so!
Thanks
Welcome
Wow! Awesome work on this Mack! Inspiring as always….🤜🏻😎♥️🎶Thanks for posting.
I've wondered where you've been. Congrats on the addition to the family. Or should I say, the additions!

Hey man you are amazing many many thanks for this magical channel
This will be the channel that will help me understand all kind of voicing especially the two handed voicings many thanks GodBless you and your family
No problem my friend
I'm a huge Guaraldi fan, but there's something about this particular song that leaves me feeling very empty and sad.
Yea I get that

A "stinger" in jazz music is something like a crash-out octave or a chord that sounds staccato - the crash-out being the final part of the Count Basie outro.
totally!
In fact, Frank Sinatra's "stinger" on the word "You" (the last word in "Fly Me To The Moon") gave that song its hook due to that famous jazz ending aforementioned. The symbolism of that "stinger" in that song is that at that point, you "kiss" your lover at that exact musical point.
Re the comments that this is too hard/fast etc, ..... Yes.. it's not beginner level, but I don’t think that is a problem . It doesn’t go off on a tangent, and the explanation is clear. Maybe it needs an indicator that this is more imtermediate as it assumes a familiarity with chord shapes and/or an ability to read sheet music. Good practical videos on this channel.
Thanks for that Chris, yes sometimes if you are a total beginner these videos are going to seem very difficult.
Very useful, great advice 👏🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you
Your welcome!
You omitted the wonderful coda - ascending broken triads in 1st inversion: C, F, G, Ab, Bb, Db - resolving down to a final C chord.
Yes I love that part! Check out the version with the trumpet solo, Tom Harrell plays amazing on this tune!
Slow down and make sure the audience has a chance to get the basic version down first... then start going into alternate inversions. I know it seems elementary for you and I did pick up a few new things but I knew this basic turn around already. To much in one lesson for beginners. And yeah, that G13 is really cool. I hadn't tried that.
Glad you got something from it - yea a brand new beginner would have a hard time with a lot of these videos, there are so many videos for total beginners I want to make material for that intermediate player looking for small practice ideas! Happy Thanksgiving.
the timing on the solo part (trying to play the way it's written) is killing me. And I played drums. Your little solo at the end of this was fantastic - your knowledge shines here
Thanks man!
It would awesome to have a PDF for this!
I play piano and violin and you really are a great pianist! Keep going, you will get famous one day.
