Unlocking Speed: (Update) Secrets to Reduce Race Car's Rolling Resistance
Desert race track. Flat. How interesting is it to drive. Looks pretty generic to me. You flatlanders need to get to a track like Palmer Motorsports Park that has elevation change.
"Flatlanders", I like it.. "How interesting is it to drive"? It is better than I expected, it does have a good flow to it in the CW direction (I have not ran CCW yet). While it is flat, it has some of the best weather in the country proving access year around. It is a good test track for that reason for me. I checked out Palmer Motorsports Park and based on the web site it looks to be a fantastic track. For me, my favorite race tracks are: Spa-Francorchamps & Road America. Thanks for sharing..
Thanks for the update on Eagle Canyon. I don't see myself moving to Texas but I'm excited about the racer "country club" trend around the country.
I no longer a member at Eagles Canyon due to moving to Arizona myself. If you get a chance to drive/race on Eagles Canyon I would recommend you do. Yes, I agree with you on the "country club" trend around the country. Very nice to see indeed. cheers
Thanks for the update. I flew down in February to check out the track and look at retirement possibilities but was disappointed that more progress hadn't been made. I realize that cash flow is everything but it seems like a Catch-22 situation. They can't generate income without investment, and they can't invest without cash flow. I'll stay in the loop.
You are most likely correct, I did hear some of their delays were due to permit issues. Progress is being made and you can tell lots of time and money is being thrown at this track. I will be there again in mid January for a race, I will do my best to get 2025 expectations from the track and share back to all. Cheers
Looks like plenty of room for solar or in combination with the pit garages with battery backup. The thing that just sucked (and can be learned from) is the pitiful bathrooms Willow Springs has.
Yes indeed the track can use solar with the land it has. From what I believe I saw power is at the track property entrance so this will not be an issue once it is finished. Many of us have had years of experiences being at tracks with nothing, power, water, toilets etc and have adapted fine. However when you have a member track that charges large initiation fees and monthly dues it does change the expectation for many. Again, this track is investing heavy and progress is being made. It is great track to race on and has massive potential.
2koooool.....I heard about this over a yr ago from local Vette club member ..central az...az needs a complete motorplex real bad....this is a good start..any other raceing planned????
Hi, yes The Podium Club has big plans that is for sure. With a couple thousand acres they can expand and expand. They did a good job in selecting the location split between Phoenix and Tucson Arizona. Heck it is only 340 miles from San Diego. What I also like is how they intend this to be a track for racers, it is safe with good run-off and fast. I believe there are already a few pro teams using this track for test and tuning. I raced there this last February for the first time, it was a US Majors SCCA race. I will be doing so again next January as that’s another US Majors. I suspect it will get more and more attention as drivers get word of this track. For me, 2025 I will focus mostly in AZ local racing. So the Podium club for sure and maybe Inde or a few other tracks. Thanks for the comment and supporting this channel…
@NixonMotorsports thank you sir for the update....they need a sign painter???? Hope they have at least a 1/8 drag strip...sounds like a full 1/4 mile w/ lots of shutdown room(jets&rockets!!!!!!) & everything else motorsports..lake?? Moto x....off road...rc. Area...thank you again ....da hobo...
I'm a member of this track. It's a great track but also a really good group running it. Very customer oriented and the people running the track operations are experienced and know how to make the track safe and fun. They also keep making on-track improvements (curbing, better curbing, run-off, etc.). They also have a lot of good member events and "guest passes" you can use to bring friends (hey, getting your friends hooked on track driving makes it even more fun, right?). I've had the privilege of driving a few different private tracks and this is definitely one of the better ones (although I really do like Inde @ Wilcox as well).
The membership the fees and the insurance is not worth it
I am on the fence myself to become a member. I’ve been members now for 4 different racetracks and must say for me it was not worth the spend. However, if you have a track side garage with everything you need there and access to the track in abundance then membership would be worth it. For example Eagles Canyon in Texas, I was a long time member there, track side garage etc. However the track never gave good track time for members, it has became more of an entertaining or experience track in my view. Thanks for the comment and supporting my channel
@NixonMotorsports Exactly.I'm in Texas and I've been to Eagle Canyon. It's a really nice facility
"No power" as he walks away from the solar power building. LOL, I guess some people don't count solar as power. It's been good enough for me for 15 years. I saw numerous air conditioner units so something is providing power there.
You are correct, it is not zero power. For the shops and such I suspect a touch more power is required.. thanks for the comment..
They've had generator and solar power since day one. They've also had the same porta potties Road America utilizes along pit lane. I guess everyone has forgotten what Buttonwillow looked liked in the 90's when it opened, or what Thunderhill looked liked in the 90's when it opened. It takes years. BW and TH got there a little faster since SCCA owns them! Dan the owner of Podium Club is ALL out of pocket on this new track. We have another new track in Maricopa! but its more "Thermal" like in $$$$ and you will never see Pro Auto/SCCA/NASA ever run there. It's truly a "members track".
@@racingdatasystems3708 I was not trying express negatives about The Podium Club, far from that. I was only reviewing progress of this new track to see what what updates have been done this year. I do like the track layout it is actually fast and fun. My other positive thought is I'm told the plan is to provide maximum track time which is ideal for any racer or team that needs frequent access. Not all members tracks are that way as you must know. Thank you again for speaking up and sharing your points! cheers
@@racingdatasystems3708 I'm from Northern California and familiar with Thunderhill's development. The Podium Club website displays an elaborate master plan but who will invest if the prospect of garage rental or home ownership is 5 or 10 years in the future? The membership initiation fee has more than doubled in the last few years so I'm not sure how "club racer" friendly this really is. But I continue to be hopeful about the Podium Club future.
Not an interesting layout, no elevation changes. I don't like the esses beside the front straight, impossible to pass on like the one at Road Atlanta. Passing only gets done on the straightaways.
With more and more racetracks being sold and developed, this is good news!
I agree it is fantastic to see so many new racetracks being developed. While The Podium club is a long way out from what they are expecting to become it is well positioned between two cities and with enough land it can keep expanding for sometime. Also, close to a highway and nearby town. Nice…
Nice track! How long until real estate vultures move in to the region?
Good question, one positive think the track did in my view was purchase 2-3k acres. Enough land to keep future residents fair away which should help.
Enjoyed the tour of your rig! Oddly enough, mine is very similar - Alpine TRX, fanatech DD Extreme. I’m new to sim, but will any wheel fit on the fanatech DD base? Thanks for sharing your set up
Glad you liked the tour of my setup! Yes, Fanatec DD wheels are compatible with a variety of wheels! Cheers
How did you mount the haptic motor on the seat? Does the seat itself have threads to screw into? Does the seats base plate have the threads? I'm considering getting this cockpit+seat and that's the only thing i have left to figure out.
In mounting the haptic to the seat for me was sorting out its placement and drilling holes through the seat for mounting it securely. I was able to pull back the seat fabric enough to get a bolt and large washer behind the fabric. That is what I did as the seat did not include any mounting itself. I hope this helps you, cheers
@NixonMotorsports thank you very much for the response. It helps immensely.
Wonderful video. Subscribed! Looking to buy a F1000. Do you have any reference/recommendation on where to buy & maintain one of these machines? Thanks, Eric.
Great I am glad you liked the video! Thank you for subscribing as well. I do know of one Stohr F1000 that is for sale, I have raced against it several times and can verify it is a well sorted and fast race car. If my memory is correct, he is asking $65,000 for it. If you have interest let me know by sending me email at sales@nixonmotorsports.com. In the meantime I will double check if the car is still available. Thanks again!
Awesome thank you for the reply.
Wow that turned out fantastic! great job
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words!
The units have their own GPS and it can not use a shared GPS from other devices. The CAN output is also a bit odd in that it has to be requested with a message as delivered, but it can be changed by the user. There are also series specific FW versions as well. I did a short video on the CAN integration th-cam.com/video/srwamgjPYaw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wCXZjw4XFl9JNg54 and could do a longer one if people wanted.
Thanks for this information, also about CAN. I’ll take a look and suggest others to do the same. Thanks again
I like the sound of the "purple 35" idea instead of having to safety car for every flat tow, though it does require everyone on track to have the system. Cool to see the newer compact variant in a video. I don't race the super tour so I have not purchased one yet.
I look forward to experience how well it works myself. You are right the negative is everyone would need to have this. Once I get it mounted and see how well it works I will share. thanks for the comment!.. cheers
Does it still fit in the garage?
Actually yes, I was worried about that actually.
Thanks for the video. Seems like it’s catching on more and more world wide now. I think the smaller display you showed would be best set in the middle of the wheel. Perhaps secured with a bit of Velcro I’m aware that WEC and F1 have a similar thing going atm. It is a good idea in principle….. when your catching someone and you’re very close about to over take you can miss a marshal point. Have you got around to do those special bearings we discussed months ago for the box and engine ? All the best to you and your lovely wife. 👍🥃🇦🇺
It does seem to be catching on across various racing series. Overall the idea does have good points, missing a flag is real and enforcing yellows is another as most racers do very little in slowing for safety because everyone else doing the same. It will be interesting to see first hand how it works and how it helps etc. Nope, on the special bearings, I do recall the input, it’s not at the top of the priority this moment. Too many life changing items for now. Thanks for the comment, and I will pass along to my wife the nice words. Thank you!
Just saw Eagle's Semi passing through Texarkana yesterday. It's going to be an early start on F1 tomorrow in Vegas. No makeup with Avon, needs to change the brand to "Nixon".
That is funny, Nixon racing tires. Nice…. Cheers
Thanks for the update Mark - interesting to hear the Nova story from the view across the pond and how it relates to your circuit racing.
Glad you found it of interest, They have a pure focus to not only remain a strong racing tire company but to earn respect in the years to come. Very cool, I am impressed with their passion.
Am I rite in thinking that it’s the same Nova motorsports that ran F3000 and F3 cars in the Uk and Europe ? Thanks for pointing Mark. Good to see you again. 👍🥃🇦🇺
Yes it is, they are one in the same. It seems the amount of machinery that was moved from UK (old Avon) to Portugal (new Nova) facility was over 400 trucks. That's huge.. thanks for the comment, and yes I've been a bit slow this summer with so much going on. Now, getting ready for next race season... cheers
So how hot do the tires get? I didn't see the actual numbers
On my frequently used compounds I see peak temps around 215f off memory. Different compounds have different ideal temperature windows. Does that answer what you are asking? If not, let me know and I will share what is needed. Cheers
Racewire and arc, in their switches have E-stops. If you wire it as a ground trigger, you wire 2 switchs in series. So both have to be pulled on to connect. 1 inside.the car one on back of the car to replace the old push pull rods
Great information here, I have seen the Racewire solutions but not ARC. It does look like both are worth looking at for a solid state battery cutoff solution. I do like the two switch approach with racewire. Thanks again and also for supporting this channel
😂
Ps5😂
I don't know why this video ended up in my feed but I paint. Primer and as you mentioned, fillers can have some weight. I'd look the car over very carefully before I would try to save 3 lbs of paint. Red looks real full over black anyway so minimize the bodywork and shoot a thin coat of black sealer and 2 double coats of red and it will be even and rich. I mean does the thing have upholstery? How about hardware that can be titanium? What about all the cables, wiring and plumbing? I don't have those answers, just questions.
Hi, on the topic is weight my car has a minimum of 1025 lbs with driver and I am right at that minimum weight now. Of course, I can pull some items off the car if I want to lose 1-2 lbs or focus on driver weight which is more impactful actually. My comment on paint vs wrap weight was wondering if paint is heavier than a wrap that is the thinking. I have seen very nice wraps but I always like a painted car. So, that’s what I am doing paint it is. Thank you for the comment and questions, it is a fun topic for sure. Cheers
Instead of repeating the adjustability and the style of shifter many different times... It would of been nice to actually see you run a race in this.
Got it, good feedback. I will do that, cheers
That driver who pushed you off the track gave me a heart attack!
Well it caught my attention that is for sure
Hey Mark …. Long time no talk. Not sure if you remember me but we were talking about ceramic bearings and airo stuff several months ago. Glad you are back mate. Thought you had retired from racing….. ! At some point we have to pick up where we left the last conversation about updates to the car and the 1% ers.. Take care. Cheers from OZ . 👍🥃🐂
Yes, it was a long pause with moving and vacation stuff. I was so dug in at the previous shop it was amazing to see how to fit everything in the new shop. I do have to say, the abundance of sunny weather in AZ is a joy that is for sure. Texas while nice has limited number of days that are sunny and not insanely humid... You get the point, thanks for reaching out. Cheers
vinyl is lighter than paint, right?
I have heard that, what would your guess be on weight savings? My guess only 1-2 lb difference. cheers
What is the cost of a rebuild and or new motor? Just started looking at the F1000. I am not sure about the cost of running over a season. Looking for a location in Texas to investigate the experience.
The typical cost for a refresh is around $2000-$3000 if there is no issues on the engine, that includes parts, Dyno and freight. You can purchase a used engine for around $4000-5000 and a new engine if you can find one around $7500. Running cost is a wide range with many factors so that one is hard to say. The F1000 is a great car with strong performance. You can race in the FA class if you plan on doing so. Thanks for the questions, cheers
Was really hoping for more driving experience feedback going from 18" to 20" besides this feels nice. You didn't even challenge the tires in any turns or state if the ride is stiffer on big bumps vs small bumps. Are the tires noisier, though that depends on the brand/type of tire. Sorry but you missed the mark in many areas of this video.
Good feedback, I understand what you are saying. Thanks for sharing, cheers
Do you happen to know what chassis number this Swift 008 is? It looks very similar to one I am working on now.
Hi Chris, I believe it was #17
Very informative video. I really liked it! You got a subscriber here!
That is great, many things in the works from my end. Thanks for subscribing
i had to do the exact same thing to my steering rack and coupler. not quite as fancy as yours but exact same problem on a formula racecar.
That’s awesome that you were able to make that improvement on your car. Cheers
Do you want to sell your old body work
Were did you buy the new body work from ?
Sure, I have various body items on the website for sale including the entire old body work. check it out, thanks
13:31, what are the sizes and brand of fittings used on the outlet port for the master cylinder? Tilton doesn't seem to have documentation on this
Sure, Series 78 master cylinders are 9/16-18 threads in the inlet port. cheers
I followed f1000 since its inception, just came across your videos, good job. To bad they dont make them any more.
yes the F1000 has had some interesting moments and future is questionable. On the positive cars are out there and if you begged and such you may be able to buy one new from previous manufacturers. What I have seen is a few converting citations into the F1000 rule base that works well. Stohr like my chassis says they are still making cars but I would suggest you stay on top of them if you went that path. At least you can race in the FA class and depending on the track the F1000 is competitive. Etc etc…. Thank you for the compliment I do appreciate it. Cheers, Mark
Do you have the adaptive steering system on this truck?
I do not recall actually, It is available on the Laramie with specific package or add-on’s. I just don’t recall sorry, cheers
@@NixonMotorsports Its included in the safety group or it is a separate option. I just know on my last two Rams with that, the steering feels weird at highway speeds until you get used to it.
That's a weep hole it there to let you know there's a problem. Usually the o-rung is bad.. DONT PLUG THAT!
We found with the dry sump setup removal of the water pump which normally goes there you need to plug this up otherwise you will have an oil leak. If you do not believe me then give it a try to see for yourself. I showed this to be the case on 3 engines. Specifically this is needed for a BRD dry sump conversion not when using the OEM water pump. Cheers
What's the highest % a 3rd element / heave spring could reduce an axle's compression by..? Or can it eliminate it entirely ..?
It will depend on what is used for a spring, for example I used hard rubber which was almost no compression. Regardless of material you will be best to measure this on scales best you can by adding 100lb weight increments. Of course there will be tire influences as their pressure increases or decreases. For me, I used the 3rd spring to help hitting the deck under full down force load and ideally not engaging otherwise. I hope this helps, cheers
Hi, just picked up a TRX of my own last month. I don't suppose you can recall where you picked up the rear speaker stands?
That’s great. If I recall, the speaker stands I found on amazon. Not sure but most likely. Enjoy the TRX rig. Cheers
Great drive!
Thank you, I appreciate the note. Cheers
FYI: When travelling at 100 MPH, air pressure into the intake apperture will be 0.17 PSI (for a given surface area). Thus, if the atmospheric pressure is 14.7 PSI, the extra air from the ram effect contributes approx 1% more air pressure (and hence oxygen). Obviously you could increase this somewhat, by tappering/narrowing the inlet apperture into the airbox.
Great information thanks for sharing!
@@NixonMotorsports If you were to taper the inlet that leads from the overhead apperture to the airbox by a 3:1 ratio, you might approx double the pressure to around 0.3 PSI (depending on losses due to friction and other things). At best maybe you'd get 2% more oxygen into the engine. You'd then need to calculate the air resistance the inlet apperture is making at the same speed (thus slowing you down), to see if it was worth it...
@@NevContractor1 I like the idea, I will spend time on this idea and see if I can experiment with this. Thanks for the comment and idea!
Man sucks to get rained out like that. Awesome turnout though in both FA and FC.
Yes it was a bummer, I hoped to have more track time for sure but the thrill of being on Road America was worth it. Agree with you the turn out was very good. Cheers
Hello my friend. All the best from OZ.🇦🇺 great video . I haven’t spoken to you for a few months. I was hoping that you would come back and resume your great vids. I have lots of comments about your race at the beautiful Road America . But I’ll keep it for another day. You did my friend. Keep it up. All the very best to you Jeff and your camera shy better half 👍🥃🇦🇺 1:11:22 1:11:22

Recently bought a oms f1000
Congratulations, Have you had it on track yet?
@NixonMotorsports not yet it was used in the Chicago area from 2013 to 2017 then sold and used as an autocross car. Needs a different wing setup up front and a fuel cell and other safety equipment to get back to road racing along with figuring out an oil cooler setup for the right sidepod
@@Divebombracing It sounds like a good project, keep us posted on progress if you would. cheers
@@NixonMotorsports definitely once I get the car all done I'll be running it in the new england regoin for scca. Won't be competitive but a blast for a regionally and track day's
@@Divebombracing I always believe the huge smile you get on your face is worth it regardless of how fast or competitive you are. That will follow as you get the car sorted. have fun!
Mark, this so cool. 👍
Great, glad you liked it!!
why bother paying 10k for a new engine when you can get one for 2k on ebay..???
Great question, I’ve done both new and used engines. The one reason I’ve gone the new engine path was because engines over time have advantages big or small incorporated in them over the years for either reliability or performance. That’s why I go with new engines to get the latest technology. Regardless new or used you would need to have the engine builder do their thing and have it on the dyno before you install. Great question, cheers
@@NixonMotorsports sounds like you have alot of money lying around... I rebuild gen 4 engines from eBay for 1.5-2k and spend $500 on parts, then I street tune them and usually make around 240-260hp with NA motors and 400hp I'm going turbo. It's a shame that motorsports has become the rich folks spot were it's all just millionaire guys in there 50s and it's a contest of who has more $$$ and not about the car... Smh
@@mishaisspeed Sounfs like you have it all sorted out. That is good hp, the best we have seen is 223 hp. I too have used a few used engines from ebay, that works for sure. Thanks for the comments!
