Further down the line contact ignition advantages for one of his efi conversions it will be the best mod u do
Thats actually the wrong way to remove the bonnet.. removing the bonnet for maintenance is a regular occurrence, so you pop out the E clips that hold the bonnet hinges. Then hold the bonnet firmly, jerk it sideways or put pressure on to one side, and the hinge will pop out the pin.. then gently slide off the other pin and lift away.. everyone does it this way.. 😎 It's ok as you're gonna paint it, but you'd be trying to line up the bonnet gaps if you do every time you work on it. And the studs snap..
I hope you read this comment sooner than latter as from what i can see, you forgot the o-rings in the bottom of the cylinder liners. Without them all your hard work will go to waste once you start the engine as the oil and water will mix togheter. Best regards and i hope i didnt write too late in the process.
Honestly this is the sort of community I hope we can grow! Thanks for the very kind comment and advice. I did actually remember the o-rings, however cut it out of the video as I had to shrink a few hours down to a few minutes! Thanks again though.
@@Renault5Rebuild Fantastic. You had me worried for a minute there. Keep up the pace and i look forward to see that car on the road again- You will love it to bits once its done.
Rolls Royce Bentley beaujolais paintwork
I had to google the colour and think your spot on!
Are you checking your clearances for the mains and big ends?
I am indeed, currently not showing every step as the initial recording was a few hours long. Thanks for the shout though. 👌👍
Huge respect for doing this yourself (and your dad). Keep it up. That first start attempt is gonna be terrifying.
Thanks! Yeah I can’t wait but at the same time 💩
Pour les segments as tu bien twisté a 120°?
Are u usein anythin on the bearings an piston rings an the liners they don't want goin in dry 🤔when u first turn the engine over wants to be lubricated
Indeed lots of assembly lube and also some engine oil at points. Thanks for watching and the advice. 👍
I hope you enjoyed the video! What do you think? Hopefully not too many mistakes!!
Don't drill out the indicators on the wings as it looks better without, and most mot guys are normally happy with the fronts as they wrap around.
I agree and don’t plan to drill them out. 👌
Great fun watching this build well done so far 👍 I would suggest converting to efi as an upgrade, this guy has designed a kit Best of luck with the rest of the project th-cam.com/video/2UeKeo1xtnA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yt-voc9wk5D8JJhj
+@ddrestore5586 thanks! Will have a watch.
Get a timing disc for the crank, and a dti as you'll need to set the timing of cam. Specs will be supplied by piper. Port match head to manifolds, nice n easy to do. With that cam you will probably be able tonjust increase the 1st stage boost enrichment, but defo get a decent wide band afr. If the scorpion exhaust is in good condition, keep it as its decent enough for your power level. I always preferred a side exit purely for the noise😂. Take you time building the block, clean, clean and clean. And make sure you check liner protrusion. Not sure if you got the head checked, but we'll worth checking the oil passage up to the rocker shaft. They had a habit of cracking after a rebuild (seems to be the re torquing of headbolts causes it) and it will dump oil into the water. A decent engineering shop can line bore it and put a bronze sleeve in. Might be worth considering. Best of luck👌
Thanks for all this information! I will take it all on board. 🙏
1.00 what is this vanishing dog magic?
🤣 🐶
Good luck with your project 👍
Thank you!
Hope you enjoyed the video! Any other modification suggestions? For all your cam replacement needs: www.pipercams.co.uk/product-category/car/renault/renault-5-gt-turbo
When you say "cracked turbo", all I hear is "opportunity for upgraded turbo".
😉 I think you might have seen the next video…
If that head didn't need skimming then it shouldn't have been! Unfortunately the C1J turbos are particularly sensitive to compression changes, something you will need to consider when rebuilding and fueling.
The head wasn’t 100% flat, it did take 4 cuts and I want to ensure a perfect seal. Thanks for the advice regarding the fueling. 👌
@Renault5Rebuild OK. Worth calculating your new compression ratio, then consider boost target and carb set up. Good luck
@@Renault5Rebuild Boost will need to be lower now. Back when these were popular i used to do SAAB APC conversions on R5 GTT's, since the SAAB Automatic Performance Control system is a separate system on early classic 900 models and can be removed and transplanted to other cars. Giving you a computer controlled Turbo with effective Knock control and boost reduction to save the engine from knock. Paul @ The SAAB Clinic UK.
Will do, thanks for your advice.
Nice! Will have to have a look at that
Look amazing Greg…. Shame about the turbo:-(
Yeah… oh well! Just another hurdle to jump! 😃
That's a job I must do with my Saab. It looks amazing!
Thanks! Honestly the process and change is amazing.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Do we do any upgrades to the engine whilst it’s in this state?? For all your engine needs here are MJAs details: www.mja-engineering.co.uk/
Could try a nut splitter on the rounded nut
+@MalcolmPowder we managed to get it off now… however an issue has been uncovered!
Grandad staring down the barrel of that Nerf gun was classic - fully expected it to go off
Now that would have made good footage 😆
Getting there with the car, love the videos and look forward to seeing the next one 😊👍🏻
Thank you!!
Your enthusiasm is quite captivating, i really enjoy even those shorter episodes. This needs more viewers tho, too little care for those old, french nuggets!
Thanks!! Very kind comment. Trying our best to increase the viewers but it’s a tough slog!
Great stuff Gregg and mostly Imogen - keep up the great content
Thanks, will do!
Will you be taking your pistons to be fitted to the conrods at the engine place that you mentioned ?
I will have a chat with them about the conrods yes. Not sure yet but believe they are bit of a pain to fit.
Think the rocker cover and sump are more a gloss black if you are wanting to keep it standard looking. Someone may correct me but I'm pretty sure mine is standard and is a gloss finish.
Amazing cheers. We aren’t going for a full on exact rebuild however trying to keep the look fairly standard. Thank you for the information and hope you are enjoying the content.
Take all the time you need to get the cleaner result possible 👍. Keep on the good work
Thanks for the kind comment. Will keep pushing forward and hopefully get better as we go.
I’m currently rebuilding the engine and gearbox on my 1989 tungsten grey R5. I’ve ordered loads of bits including a full engine rebuild kit from spain and the import tax takes the piss. Still probably cheaper than some uk suppliers however. Problem is you need the parts 🙄 once I’ve got it on the road we’ll have to meet up. Good luck with the build 👍🏻
Yeah agreed. Sounds good!!
I needed a load of parts to refresh my gt engine and have used the spanish parts people but by the time they put the postage on it was cheaper to get them over here this time
@@matthewjoss417 think I fully agree now!
Great video! thanks! 🙂
Thank you!
Love the channel and the project 😃. just upload when you can its all good 👍
Thank you! Very kind and will keep trying to get better at this
@@Renault5Rebuild no worries, your doing great 👍🏻, everyone starts somewhere
The head linein is glued in mate u wanted to use a heat gun uv jst ruined that headlining
Ahh no… thanks for letting me know
Would an ultrasonic cleaner not have been better or easier to clean the parts with.
You’re probably right! It’s a balance between buying more equipment and parts for the car right now. Will keep it in mind though. Hope you are enjoying the content.
I love seeing a new generation being "introduced" to vintage cars, in a way that seems like they actually enjoy it. *subscribed*
Thank you for your kind comment
For anyone who might be interested in the art print here is the link: www.etsy.com/shop/RonaMcSeveny For the Raider fans Rona has also created a special print....
If you can't fix it then clean it.
Hopefully we can do both 👍
Hope you have kept the big end caps in the correct order as they are a machined with the con rod and not interchangeable. Also, i would just replace the water pump, as the bearing looked fairly tight, you dont want to go through all this trouble to have a leaking pump. Depending on your end goal, if the rest of the pistons are ok, you can get that det scar machined off, we used to skim the pistons by 1mm in the very early days to lower compression ratio to run silly amounts of boost. So a few though shaved off will do no harm, just make sure all the pistons are machined the same. I wonder if it was cylinder no.3 as we always found that cylinder to run leaner than the rest due to the carb/manifolds flow characteristic. Also, get a tap and die set, or a thread restore kit and use that to clean every thread on the head/block etc, will make reassembly so much easier.
Thanks for the advice will definitely look into thread restoring and have indeed kept all the big end caps in order.
@Renault5Rebuild no problem. Have built many c1j's in my time, some standard most powerful was 271 bhp. Used to run a business tuning early Renaults so will be here to help if needed. Great to see them being kept alive. I still have a 5, but mine has a audi 1.8 20v turbo engine, still a work in progress but will be awesome when finished👌. Are you planning a standard rebuild?
Amazing! Will take you up on that. Have been thinking of keeping it fairly standard… maybe increase to 200 max however want it usable.
@Renault5Rebuild around 180 is the sweet spot and easy to achieve. If you want to change the cam, a piper 285 and vernier is a great choice and retains good driveability and idle. However, it will need a t25 turbo to get the most out of it. Intercooler look for a decent alloy intercooler, or sometimes a pace chargecooler will crop up on ebay, these are very good for that power level and easy to fit and neat, too. As for fuelling, you can achieve that power easily with basic mods to 1st and 2nd stage boost enrichment, sounds more complex than it is in reality. And finally, I'd invest in a wide band lambda sensor and gauge, as then you can be 100%, it's fuelling well.
Sorry for the late reply! Just realised I missed your comment. I have indeed gone for a piper but the 275 with vernier as recommended by piper for the kind of driving that I plan to do. Thanks for your comments and support.
Don't put silicon hoses on your cooling system unless you are building a race/track day car, they leak coolant over time and your constantly filling up. Standard rubber hoses are the way to go for a street car. Silicon are however the proper ones for all turbo plumbing.
Thank you!
Good job! Thanks!
Thank you!
Your old and strange apprentice suggests completing the engine, so all components are in and not getting lost…. Make sure it starts and therefore oil is on all components…. Use fogging oil and mask up intakes and exhausts…. Buy a dehumidifier and insulation for your garage doors…. This should keep any moisture away from the engine and you won’t lose anything :-)
Thank you ALAN! I think you are right about the components… plus it means we are more likely to remember how to put it back together 🤣
I did send another comment but seems like its dissapeared :( I had a spare engine stored in my garage and ended up selling it as i knew it would deteriorate over time even though i plugged up all the ports to reduce condensation. As you are lucky enough to have yours in bits i would coat everything in preservative oil & vac bag as much as possible. restore & rebuild when your ready to pop it back in the car. only my opinion so google 'engine long term storage' and plenty of help out there
Thanks for the advice, you will have to come and have a look sometime!
First time I stripped an engine, I got to the point where I wondered if I’d ever get all the bits back in the right places. Scary but an amazing point to be at. And this is the first time I’ve seen an engine where the linings come out with the pistons, presumably because it’s not a cast iron block. (Showing my age again) so even at 70, not too old to learn. Thanks Gregg, fun and informative again. Your apprentice seems to have grown much older and stranger though?
Oh yes… it’s absolutely terrifying! You will have to come and have a good look when you’re up next! Not sure which one of us is the apprentice 🤣
roose motorsport are highly recommend and do a phase 2 set for you.
Thanks chap!

We shall see… 😉
There is enough carbon there to freeze a scruffy looking nerfherder 😁😁😁

It's been a while since I've seen inside a C1J, so very interesting video there, thanks for that. For hoses, have a look at Roose Motorsport - decent price and excellent quality. They're a British company too.
That’s Brilliant. Thank you for that suggestion we will have a look later!
