Building a Collage With Your Gel Prints
In this video, I'll be transforming the accent papers I recently made into a brand-new collage! th-cam.com/video/62D1YplFvKg/w-d-xo.html These papers, while vibrant and full of character, will play the role of supporting actors in this piece. The spotlight will be on a stunning large botanical gel print on tissue, which serves as the heart of the composition. Along the way, I'll share my process for choosing a harmonious color scheme and crafting dynamic shapes from the accent papers to bring the collage to life. Join me for tips, inspiration, and a closer look at building a cohesive artwork with gel prints!

These original accent papers feel a bit too high-contrast for my current projects. S...

Lovely. Thanks so much for walking us through your process.
Very helpful, thankyou 😊
C'est très beau, est-ce que c'est vous qui avez fait les genre de fougères sur le papier de soie ?
Thank you! I have used a lot of different plants, including ferns, in my gel prints. I particularly love weeds!
So beautiful!!! Absolutely love it. Thank you for sharing. You are such a good teacher. Blessings from Jayna from down under ❤️🇦🇺🦘
Thank you so much! Enjoy printing with all your interesting plants.
Thank you Kit, I surely will. Love gel printing 😊
This really is great - it is so rare to see someone taking all the papers and put together a well designed art work, that is complete in itself, using all the separate bits. I do have a question: all through the process of putting on the pieces from other papers, I wanted to see a big connected shape form, as in other visual art i have worked in. The big connected shape ends up pulling the composition together, letting the viewer's eye travel to the center of interest without having to leap over divides or find an alternate route to get to the center of interest. what do think about that in collage?
I love to layer so I design my first layer of collage and paint as a solid structure that I feel I can add the more transparent layers. Using a light botanical print as the next layer and then the dark print on top, I think adds depth in a work that is pretty abstract. I like to have a primary centre of interest with secondary focal areas. If the eye can travel around the work without getting stuck, it is usually a successful painting. There is a lot of decision making and feeling my way along before I am ready to glue papers down!
@ being able to delay that decision of where something goes is s huge deal! Definitely not like watercolor, where the water sometimes has a mind of its own!😅 thanks! I'm loving your channel. though I'm still really new to collage, it's been delightful to watch and gain more insights
Breathtakingly beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
Dearest Kit, you are a lovely woman. Your explanations are wonderful! Great teacher! Thank you ever so much for these tutorials.❤
You are so welcome!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!

Another beautiful demonstration and wonderful guidance video. The Collage is just lovely.
Thank you so much!
I love this video! The colour palette is my favourite too. I'm definitely going to recreate it with my Australian botanicals. Thanks again Kit!
I love this colour combination. Have fun with your botanicals. I have to wait months to print more. But, at least I have my Stash!
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing this. Really helpful
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing this excellent tutorial and inspiration
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your techniques, can’t wait to give it a try! Just lovely❤❤
Thanks so much 😊Have fun!
Beautiful piece.Thank you for this demonstration. I am wondering how archival the materials are… how long will the tissue elements last before degrading? Thank you.
I use Spectra Art Tissue which is acid free. The rice paper is also acid free. They are, of course, encased in matte medium so not exposed to air. I finish the work with a coat of removable varnish with UV protection (I like the satin finish personally) So I think, overall this is an archival process.
Thank you SO much for your generous sharing of your process. Not only do I appreciate seeing HOW you achieved such a beautiful collage, but it was wonderful to see the piece grow. It is fabulous.
Thank you so much! It is a very organic process!
Wonderful! I really like the aesthetics of your work. Thanks for sharing your creative thought process. The inspiration paper is particularly lovely. Did you make a video when you created it? I don't recall having seen it. I would think that Queen Anne's Lace would be tricky to use on the plate. Any insights on how you managed this would be appreciated. I am inspired to try printing with them this summer. Thanks again.
Thank you! I don't have a video of this particular sheet of tissue being created but check out Turning Weeds Into Art th-cam.com/video/qhFYAsNUpoM/w-d-xo.html which used similar weeds. This is actually dill weed picked before the seeds get too dry (very narrow window of opportunity!). Sometimes I remove some of the seedheads to make it less 3 dimensional. Flattening it under some weight before printing can also help. The tissue allows you to press your fingers into all the little spaces while removing the background paint from the plate.
The Queen Anne’s Lace print is exquisite!
Thank you! It is actually just dillweed picked before the seedheads get too dry.
@KitBellArtist Super! I will plant some in the Spring!
Watch Creating Softer Accent Papers th-cam.com/video/62D1YplFvKg/w-d-xo.html to see how I created these papers! Happy printing!
Thank you for all the great information

Oh wow!
Bravo!! I think I’m finally seeing all the nuances that make beginning this process, and seeing it through, so much easier. Thank you for your excellent teaching! And ten dollar words to peek rekindle my vocab skills lol
I have created a number of videos over the past few months focusing on creating prints. I only have a narrow window of opportunity while these plants are available in my region. But I wanted to show what becomes of them! Glad you liked it!
Those come out really nice.
I was very pleased with this batch! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful papers, thank you - some really useful techniques here!
You are so welcome! I think the basic techniques are so versatile. Lots of possibilities
Appreciated this overview. Definitely pumped for more! Thank you!
Thanks! I have set up this series in a playlist that makes it easy to follow. The playlist is on my channel. Happy creating!
Hi Kit! lovely printing!! I am thinking of getting a die cutter and wonder which model of cricut you have? Would you recommend that one for making stencils? thank you for sharing!
I have a Cricut Maker. I purchased it instead of the less expensive Cricut Explore because you can control the settings for pressure, etc. directly. It will also cut more materials. I use Dura-lar for the stencil material. It is like a Mylar. It is easy to cut but very tough. I have stencils that I have used many times that show no wear or tear. I am very happy with this set up!
great tutorial. i absolutely love your stencils. any chance you have thought of making more and selling them. thanks Kit.
I am making inquiries with a company that sells stencils. Hopefully that will work out!
I hope so. I will definitely purchase one.
thanks so much for your videos! they are so well made with excellent instruction!
Glad you like them! And thanks for watching. Happy creating!
Hi Kit 👋 Another superb masterclass, thank you so much ❤ Thanks to you fabulous teaching I am making some beautiful papers and am almost forgetting the point is to make something out of them! Wishing you and your family very Happy Holidays! ❤❤❤
I love making papers! I am hoping to make another video on using the papers, next. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Very helpful for the beginners like me. Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate your generosity
Glad it was helpful! It is so hard to explain this process in words. So much easier to show!
Please, Kit, share with us your process of assembling all these lovelies into the final piece. Thank you!
My next video will be taking some of these and showing how I use them. For now, check out Gel Printing and Mixed Media Video #8 th-cam.com/video/83Tsitf9lV4/w-d-xo.html. Happy printing!
Your tutorials are among my favorites, so much to take away from them, and your papers and finished pieces are wonderful.
So nice to hear! Thank you for watching
Beautiful results! Remarkable style for collage papers. Thank you! Where did you get those stencils? Did you create them? They REALLY add a whole different dimension for the gel plate. 😃
Thank you! I created those stencils myself from photos and my own prints. I have a video on the process. It is called Transform Your Botanical Gel Prints into Stunning Stencils: A Step-by-Step Guide, th-cam.com/video/fd-VJrNljgs/w-d-xo.html. I use a computer to create an image I can send to my Cricut cutting machine. You could also cut them by hand with an Exacto knife.
Thank you for sharing.. I'm loving your tutorials and look forward to the next one ❤
Glad you like them!
Wonderful techniques-beautiful results! Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
The timing of this video couldn't be more perfect! My plan is to have a gelli printing session today, and I already had the high contrast paper steps in mind. Now, I can create both bold contrast and the soft versions to really bulk out my collage paper collection fast 🥰 Thank you for sharing these lovely techniques!
It is great having different techniques and options available, isn't it! Have fun!
This is beautiful. I also make stencils from my own prints by cutting them with a exacto knife. I would like to kno how do you cut yours?
I used to cut mine with an exacto knife but I have too much arthritis in my hands to cut these detailed stencils now. So I use my Cricut cutting machine. I create an image of one of my photos or prints, on my computer to send to the Cricut machine. I cut the stencils out of Dura-lar which is easy to cut but very durable. I have a video on that, if you are interested: Transform Your Botanical Gel Prints into Stunning Stencils: A Step-by-Step Guide, th-cam.com/video/fd-VJrNljgs/w-d-xo.html.
Thank you very helpful🙏🏻new subscriber😊
Thanks for subbing!
Thank you for this! So informative and clear - I often have darker prints and deally struggle to lighten them, usually just use white and the results are not what I want! This will help me tremendously! Thank you again 🎉🎉🤍
Glad it was helpful! It is nice having options!
Thank you! I love your content! I wished to see every positive/ghost print from all prints. But that’s just me. A little ocd with paint. I can’t wait to try your techniques.
I actually had over 2 hours of video from these print making sessions. I edited it down to 44 minutes! That was hard! I am just never sure how long people really want to watch a TH-cam video.
I love how you present a creative and logical method of producing background papers. There are so many possibilities and color-ways! Thank you very much!
Thank you for watching! I think it is great to have lots of possibilities at our finger tips!
I love how the fan brush one turned outQ
Ohhh! That was a surprise, wasn't it!
TYFS ❤❤❤
Thank you for watching!
i love your work and how you explain your process so clearly. thank you for taking the time to share cheers from "Down Under"
You are so welcome from the "Great White North"!
Can you share how you store your plates? Love your channel.
I have purchased sheets of plexiglass for each plate (I have a 16x20, a 12x14 and an 8x10). When not in use, I put a sheet of paper overtop and store them flat. I can stack them if needed. It makes them easy to move around the studio.
You are a natural teacher. I learn something in each videi
Thank you for that comment! Happy painting/printing!
Very comprehensive. Now I need a computer and a cricket
You could use tracing paper and Mylar 😊
I love my Cricut machine. I used to use an exacto knife but I have too much arthritis in my hands now to be able to cut the more detailed stencils I like to use.
A tried and true method!
Excellent! I've had good results making accent papers from your previous tutorial. I can see where these more subtle papers will be useful as transitions. Thank you! ❤❤
I think lots of possibilities can take our work further!
