Acrylic Paint Comparison for Gel Printing
In this video, I compare different brands of acrylic paint for gel printing, with a focus on how they stack up against my go-to, Golden Open acrylics. Many of you have mentioned struggling to get the same results using other brands, so I'll be testing out a few popular options and sharing my thoughts. Plus, I’ll reveal a magic ingredient that can help other acrylics behave more like the Golden Open acrylic!
This video is a bit longer so I have included Chapters in the description. Spend more time watching the comparisons that interest you and skip the ones that don’t. And I have included a review at the end so we can compare the dried prints.

Playing with Positive and Negative

Let's experiment with botanicals on the gel plate. A few months ago while I was gel printing, in an unplanned moment, I did something which created an interesting result. Today I am going to explore this further. I call it a Positive / Negative print, where some of the botanicals are removed (and print positive images) while others are left on the plate and create voids (hence the negative elem...

Having trouble getting the charcoal off my gel plate
@@richardturton8028 are you having trouble with getting it to transfer or trouble cleaning the plate afterwards?
Try soap and water. I find that gets most stuff off the gel plate. If that fails, try wipes (the ones with alcohol).
Kit. Hello! Very interesting and informative video. Thanks for taking the time to do the comparison and keeping all the variables straight. 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Such a lovely variety of so many beautiful prints.
Thanks you! There are so many techniques to create texture and interest with the gel plate!
Thank you for the inspiration. I have just found you and I'm working through your videos. 🙂
You are so welcome!
i use liquitex basis or amsterdam paints for printing with fab results but you have to work faster. there is no rolling it out and then waiting! i get two negatives and two positives most times. another trick for extending paint is using wallpaper paste as an extender. its super cheap but its not archival, great for practicing. thanks for your videos!
Thanks for the tip!
Very interesting comparisons. Helps a lot when using the paints I have in my stash. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Colors? Payne’s and red oxide?
I think for this batch of tissues and papers, the colours were Paynes Gray, Transparent Iron Oxide plus Anthraquinone Blue. Quite a neutral colour combination!
thanks Kit. very informative. i wonder what would happen if you mixed the golden open gel with the Amsterdam or Blick acrylic paint.--would it also extend the drying time and number of postive and negative pulls?
It would! The Blick acrylic paint is very similar to the Opus paint I used to compare so take a look at that chapter of the video. Most of the Amsterdam colours are quite opaque so I use them when I need that.
thank you Kit
Thank you for this. I was in Michale's today in the acrylic paint section. I read all the various labels...I was SO confused ( I'm new to Gelli printing). I left telling my self I needed more information. This video was perfectly timed, for me. Your videos are exceptional
Glad it was helpful!
I just love your videos!! So informative and you speak so softly and calmly Ty for sharing your knowledge ❤️❤️❤️
So nice of you!
I'm waiting right now for a Golden Open order. LOL! I took advantage of a sale at Cheap Joe's. I thought about trying the Golden Open medium, but didn't. Good to know it helps. Especially for the more expensive colors. Thank you for this comparison. It shows what was happening to me with multiple pulls using non open paint.
I do love the Golden Opens but if I don't have the colour I want, I use my regular paint and add the Open Gel. If you decide to try it, make sure you get the Open Gel and not the Open Medium. The Gel retains the working characteristics of heavy bodied paint.
@@KitBellArtist Thanks! I was wondering which was better.
I have watched several of your videos and I just have to tell you how much I enjoy them. They are well organized and inspirational! I've learned so much about paper and paint selection, allowing for layering patterns. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks so much 😊
I love your masks. I'm still cutting mine by hand. They will be helpful in the winter when the vegetation is gone. Thanks for this excellent comparison video.
Cutting masks by hand is a tried and true method! And they are handy in the winter!
What gorgeous colour combos & textures. I have a garden plagued by lantana - looks like I’ll be appreciating it much more now 😊 New subscriber
If it is going to be pulled out anyway, why not print it!! Have fun.
Magnifique 🤩🌸🌸🌸
Thank you!
These are fabulous techniques and a keeper video! Just this morning I was trying to figure how to make subtle collage papers with linework for a current project. This is just the ticket - thank you!
I love your description "subtle collage papers with linework"! I couldn't have said it better. Enjoy the techniques!
Hi Kit, just love your teaching videos and your beautiful work! Thanks so much for the information and inspiration!!!
You are so welcome! And thank you for watching!
Hi Kit, love the way you share your process of getting unstuck with us. Really useful tip with the water to tear the paper. I've been using wet strength tissue paper so this doesn't work unfortunately. What is the paper you use? Id really appreciate that info. Love the affect and feel of them.
Thank you so much! I use Spectra Art Tissue. It is available in art supply stores or through Staples in Canada or Amazon world wide. It is stronger than regular tissue and is also acid free. It is not as strong as wet strength but it goes more transparent when collaged than wet strength does.
@@KitBellArtist thanks so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it. I'll look into seeing if I can source something similar in the UK.
This is fabulous! I have loads of prints but never know how to put them together. Thank you so much ❤
Thank you! I spend most of the summer months creating tissues for use in the winter. I will be making some more videos on my collage process this winter.
I love this artwork and appreciate you sharing your process. Thanks ❤
My pleasure 😊
What were your colors on this second one? Do you cut your geometric shapes out of heavy cardstock?
The colours on the second roll up are Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Dioxazine Purple and Sap Green. One of my favourite combinations! These geometric shapes are cut out of Dura-lar which is sort of like acetate. It comes in a pad of 25 9x12 sheets and has a matte finish on both sides. Easy to cut and lasts forever! Available at art stores or online. I have used cardstock to cut geometrics and that works well also. Cardstock tends to suck the paint off the plate initially but one it has a good coat of acrylic on it, then it acts more like a mask and protects the paint under it.
lovely! sometimes i layer my lighter negative prints on top of each other too. especially when i am using transparent colour. or sometimes i go crazy and layer my dark positives. soon cats will be living with dogs! lol. very much appreciating your videos, thank you!
Layering provides such interesting results, doesn't it! Happy printing!
I love watching how you create! It makes me want to get my jelly plate out and go to town. Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration.❤
Go for it! And let me know if you have any questions.
I was excited to see you posted another video, love your work and approach. I am new to gelli printing so I am learning a lot. Your content was presented clearly and easy to understand. Thanks for all the inspiration
I love that you can get great results with the gel plate even as a noobee! Happy printing!
wonderful, Kit. thank you for sharing your color combinations. the pulls are lovely.
Glad you like them!
Thank you Kit for the informative videos. I love them all. Is that wet strength tissue that you use?
I mostly use Spectra Art Tissue for these. It is quite strong but not as strong as Carnival's Wet Strength tissue. I use that when I let the paint dry on the plate and then use another layer of acrylic paint or medium to pull the print. But that is not a technique I use very often. I prefer working like this (in the video).
Lovely!
Thanks for watching!
I’m going out side after this video and looking for a vine.
I love vines!
I can't tell you how much i enjoy your videos! Just changing to the Open transparent colors in your palette has helped so much. I'm also printing my winter stash while the vegetation lasts. I've cut some stencils from my favorite negative pulls. I like the positive/negatives you printed today. Thanks. ❤
Thank you so much! I am glad my videos are helping!
Thank you for giving so many ideas and tips. To keep some leaves to use later on, I put mine in a plastic bag in my freezer. Most plantmaterial can be stored like that. I use them and put them back again. You can really try that.
That's a great idea!
@@amandavdbergh2210 good thinking. I’ve also pressed printed vegetation in books after the paint has dried on them, but before they get crispy. The metallics are beautiful additions to collage. I seal them under and over with gel medium.
i never knew that. thank you for the tip.
Thank you for sharing this. I love your voice too! I think this will be a fab start to some landscape paintings ❤
You’re welcome 😊
What size is that plate? It looks huge and I must have it! Lol
It is Gelli Arts 16x20 plate. It is the one that I use the most as I leave it set up. It is a bit heavy and wobby to handle. Apparently they have a 18x24 inch one available now.
I greatly enjoy your videos and have learnt a lot. Sorry if this is a basic question but how do you deal with different weight papers when collaging? Doesn't it just end up lumpy and uneven? Juno
Thank you for watching! I print primarily on Spectra Art Tissue. I do use some smaller pieces of a heavier paper as accents. See Video #8: Adding Paint for examples. I think the key to using multiple types of paper is to consider the paper's weight as part of the design choice as well as it's color and value. I hope that helps!
Thank you. I always love the multiple pulls you achieve, particularly the negative ones. I found it difficult to do with cheaper paints so took delivery of some Golden Open yesterday and, lo and behold, it works! Thank you for your videos, please don't stop.
@@user-ii5hs4kc4t Awesome! You won't regret getting those Golden Opens!
Thank you Kit. I have just recently discovered your channel and I have to say I am so enjoying your techniques and your easy manner in which you explain what you are doing. So Inspiring as a 'Newbie" to gel plate and collage.
You are so welcome! Enjoy the journey!
I love how you've taken inspiration from @yeatesmakes and made such lovely prints to use in your future works. I absolutely love using charcoal and pastels on my gel plate and you've inspired some new ideas. Have you ever tried using pastels directly on the plate? That's fun too. Just know, a bit of baby oil will be necessary to get it off after - pastels really stick. But just a dab will do ya so it's no big deal. Thank you for another wonderful video!
Thank you so much! I will have give that a try.
When I walk in Nature I like to go in the Wild - the nearest is my Wild Garden - and the known and the unknown is always embracing the Living Now and that is what I try to open in my drawing and painting process - and I like the Way you Work and show some wonderfull possibilities of moving into the known-unknown with your very inspiring collage, printing techniques 🎵🤍🤎🖤🎶
Thanks for sharing! I love to dance on the edge!
I LOVE this technique. Can't wait to experiment with it. Thank you for sharing!!--
Have fun!
Thank you so much! I wouldn’t guess that it would work with charcoal and pastels. Interesting, that it doesn’t smudge when you roll the medium over charcoal. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful! The gel plate seems to grab the dry medium really well but still let go of it onto the paper.
I love Yeates videos too.
Very inspirational 👏
Thank you so much Kit, I really really enjoyed watching you create those beautiful and unique pieces. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too.
Thank you so much!
What type of tissue paper do you use for this technique? So inspiring! Thank you.
I use Spectra Art Tissue. It is much stronger than dollar store tissue and is acid free. The Carnival Wet Strength tissue is also very good.
Apologies to @yeatesmakes for misspelling his channel name! For those of you who haven't visited this channel, there is a wealth of inspiration on it!
Oh how exciting!!! Can’t wait to try this❤ Ty so much Kit 😊
Have fun!
I am learning so much from you! And I admire your lovely work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks so much, Kit!
My pleasure!
Keep making video I love everything you do you have helped me so much thank you
Thank you! Will do!
You do a disservice to @yeatesmakes by spelling it incorrectly. There is an ‘e’ in there. Fortunately, it will take you to the correct place if you search by clicking on it in your description.
The fact that Kit even gives credit to another youtuber is laudable. Whether she misspelled his name or not is irrelevant and certainly not a disservice to him.
I found that out after I had posted it. Although I can't post a corrected version, I have fixed the mistake in the video description, in a pinned comment and inserted a "card" with a direct link to his channel in the video. Hopefully that will help and direct some viewers to an excellent channel.
Thank you!😊
You're welcome 😊
Beautiful! Thank you!😊
Thanks for watching!

Yes! I am starting to think of some used for those speckled sheets.
