We will not see cars that drive itself on the road, for another 100 years. There is no way we can mix todays cars with self driving cars. There are too many people that would fuck with them and drive them off the road while the rider is sleeping. Wont see them for a long time.

I was watching documentaries on self driving cars 5 years ago, then forgot about it, and then, incredible, they can do it now. I'm a young guy, an engineer, and I say heck no. just me, I don't like it. even if it is probably as competent as a nervous human driver. lets just say I'm not looking forward to doing cntrl-alt-delete at highway speed.

Not practical. About as realistic as when futurists envisioned sidewalks that moved us from place to place. I think what will actually happen is they'll use this technology to reduce accidents, not to completely replace drivers. It may also be possible to use this for long stretches on the highway. I just don't see this completely replacing drivers anytime soon.

I got a better one for you. You don't need a car at all. Walk outside and from your smart phone order a car. The car comes to you. You get in. Give it your destination, swipe your Google Wallet and then get out. The car goes to a staging area between trips thereby saving a whole lot of gas. Want to drive, then order a car that allows you to interact similar to ZipCar.

Mouse included? Do I have to click on google maps for the car to take me there? Thank you!

No more designated driving for me!!

I had to go to a driver safety class, get a discount and take points off for speeding. ;P A kid that was sitting behind me had a backpack on. the rest of us were wondering why like is he some kind of nerd or something, but when she asked to see his ticket he opened his backpack full of them, saying he wasn't sure which one the class was for. XD <---all being speeding tickets in a YARIS. A fucking yaris ppl... 2fast 2 furious? haha freaking kids man.

truck driving especially. no stops cross country, no worry of a sleep depervated driver. efficiency would go through the roof. this includes the propane/hyrdogen hybrid semi by the way. can make it from maine to baja cali on 1 tank of gas. so no stops in between to fill.

I don't think the hardware (microwave, lidar, etc) would be all that expensive.. But the software would be another story.

So what if it gets caught speeding? "I swear, officer, it was the car!" Then again, I've never seen a Prius get pulled over for speeding... Just for driving too slow.
