For anyone interested: “Shadows of the Moonlight” is a song I wrote thinking about my great grandfather, Sam Smith It’s a campfire song; a reflection on the mental, spiritual and physical distances a man can travel between night and day. And to me it’s also a reminder of how the safe job can get you killed. . . My great grandfather Sam enlisted in the Army during World War I and served in Battery B, 3rd Regiment, Field Artillery. After discharge with rank of Corporal, he spent the next four years as a cowboy on the 9 Nail Ranch near Albany, Texas. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed working on the range and the life of a cowboy. He gave up that range life to marry Amber Lillie Langford, and for safety and security became a lineman with the West Texas Telephone Company. In 1929, he joined Texas Louisiana Power Company as a lineman, and a year later was promoted to manager of the Goldthwaite office. In the spring of 1935, our family moved to Whitney, Texas, where my great grandfather served as a district manager. On Halloween day 1935, my great grandfather Sam met his death accidentally while installing test equipment on a bank of transformers in Covington, Texas. My grandfather, Joey, was only eight years old when he got in a fight with his father on the same morning of Sam’s accident, and Joey carried an awful guilt his entire life for childishly telling his father he wished he would never come home again on the very day that would make it so.
