I have a 10' Aire Tributary and a 14' Star. I would take the Trib on a wilderness trip, but I would be very hesitant to take the Star on a wilderness trip. I just don't trust the quality of the Star in more than a recreational adventure.

I just found this video! I just ordered one of these. It will be perfect for walking down my 214 sq ft kite. I won't need more than about 2 kN. 4 kN will be more than enough. The convenience of the single piece of gear will be great. Thanks for the review!

Nice video.... Technically the route you were running is "the needle". Ned's Needle is just left of that line, and more for narrow boats. Paul's needle is the one right of the main needle, and not something I would choose to raft on purpose as it is very steep.

How do you turn on the sirens? At Key 4 other lifty's and I were blasting down Mozart on your wonderful chords on a cold cloudy morning, as I'm making that left hand turn to go over the ''Blast Zone" I'm just zooming down the middle of the run at top koch speed! As I reach the knuckle of the roller I send it!!!... Right as I take flight and I'm soaring through the sky their just happened to be a cat climbing the the hill and coming off the run late!!! Right as I'm airborne I see it!!! While I'm mid-air and my trajectory is set he gives me a double honk....like that's going to do anything!!! As I land one ski clips the tail end corner flap of the turning spiked grooming part. It happened so FAST I instantly thought I'm GOOD!!! And the very next second my ski popped off and my boot kicked the snow and I rag-dolled well over half of that slope and had a complete yard sale! When I came to a stop I looked up hill and your guy just kept going... One of the other blue coat dudes was able to stop and help collect my gear (I broke a one ski pole and both flew off my wrist every with having that loop things around my wrist). A couple minutes later I reach the bottom lift hut and the other 3 had not seen what happened thought I could been killed up their. But I survived with a minor injury, my knee swelling up like the size of softball and I was ringing 4 days later. If you have heard of such a urban legend amongst your Vail cat ops, that rider was me during the 13-14 season. I survived the tail and the "blast zone" was not rename "The Blood Zone" in my honor....You kinda look like John and I think he was their that morning....The End

I’m a private boater who has taken several first timers through. Half the time we don’t scout, because to me the scout is more hazardous. We have people video scout it, then when running it we will pair up and lead a boat down closely. My 15 year old made his first solo through in August, and I kept him right behind me. Mind you he’s seen it a dozen times before .

I used to, instead of Prussik cords, I would tie mid line alpine butterflies and clip a carabiner

Where are you bro? Lol. So what you are saying is the raft and what you are standing on are both slippery af. Lol

It's a 4-5 minute walk from where you eddied out to properly scout the rapid. This is a good example of pushing on the oars not working. The move you missed is a pull or ideally a downstream ferry.

I have a mind set that if you don’t scout a rapid, and have never ran it, you need to increase the rating. So in my head I would treat this is a solid class 4+ or 5 when you go in blind. It sucks when that happens, definitely because you have the skills to style a rapid like this. Next time you run it, I highly recommend a downstream ferry right into the top of the eddy. That sets you up perfectly to tuck behind the house rock.

The scout for this rapid is good and lets you see the entire line, your group just didn't walk down to the rapid!

Scouting is good from the scout area. You cannot see a small part of the rapid, but you can see the key moves you have to make. Your raftmates did you a big disservice by telling you it was not worth it to scout and for not waiting for you on one of the biggest rapids on this river. I love pushing rapids when rowing, but don’t push very much on this rapid. Good video and breakdown, thank you for sharing so others can learn.

By the way, in your other video, to prusik or not (comments are off on that video) you keep saying your demonstrating a clove hitch, you’re not, it’s a Larks Foot or Girth Hitch

Fundamentally it is a working 3:1 system. However, why do you have such long prusik loops? You even tie a knot in one to shorten it, which by the way hardly shortens it at all but does significantly weaken the cord by up to 65%. And, why would you put an unnecessary knot into a tensioning system? It’s only going to be hard to undo, (I actually thought you were going to clip inside the overhand knot, which would have made more sense). A prusik of around 35cm will allow you to tie a classic or French prusik and if you really want for some reason a klemheist (yours is tied badly which is why it slides when you pull it!), the the first two options work better though. The square shaped pulleys you’re using are designed to work with prusik loops, by releasing the prusik when it touches. The top prusik works as the progress capture, by having your loop sooooo long, you risk it not engaging properly, greater shock loading if the system slips and a lot of lost effort as the canoe/raft will slide backwards until the prusik grabs. Ideally you want it to grab instantly (like a mechanical device would), so another couple of reasons to shorten your prusik.
